Long Haul Flights innit

You don't have to wear flight socks... providing you waggle your feet/ankles around regularly and get up to stretch your legs fairly often you should be OK. Just do it discreetly or you'll look as much of a tw*t doing it as you would have done in your attractive socks in the first place!

All well and good, but if you fall asleep (which happened to my friend (Lemond) on the way back from Thailand, he got a DVT, hence the warfarin knowledge!!) your waggling will stop too.

Also there's the fact that I have to scan patients who've been on long haul flights and have potential Pulmonary Emboli!! They don't look like they're enjoying themselves much either!!

Every hour and a half lol

Something like that might do the trick... every couple of hours.

If you're drinking plenty, you'll have enough reason to get up and wander about... but be sure to wear shoes when you go for a slash.

I (& the wife/kids) must have wiggled during sleep then without knowing, every time we flew across the Atlantic (6-10 times a year for six years)...plus all the internals in South America...plus the ones between South and North America...

I'm joking about the 'look' of the socks...but really, with sensible behaviour inflight there is no need for them for the vast majority of the flying public. It's just another product sold on the back of 'fear'. Walks around the cabin and water should do anyone fine.

Right I'm going to New Zealand in a week and a half.

Just wondering what the flights are like seeing as the furthest out I've been is probabley Malaga lol.

So for those who you have previous long haul flying experince

Im in "Economy" Btw lol

1)do you get decent leg room - yes as long as you are not over 6 feet tall - i am, and the person in front does not drop te seat back....ITS WORTH READING UP TACTICS ON GETTING A FREE UPGRADE!!!

2)do you get decent films - many and yes

3)is the food reasonable - yes v nice and free biize, remember the food seems to sit at the top of the stomach and not digest as your in the air. not sure if thats generic or just me

4)is it possible to get some kip - yes quite easy but again varys from person to person

5)does the boredom drive you close to suicide - not really

If it's like a 24 hour Easy Jet Flight I think I'll consider cancelling.

happy holiday

Of course most people will never need them (like crash helmets and safety belts) but some people might be prone to clotting without knowing it (especially women on the contraceptive pill). Better safe than sorry.

And yes they are sold by fear, but they do work, otherwise hospitals wouldn't give them to post operative patients!!

But then I'm just paranoid!

How do these flight socks help?

Jeez, now women will stop taking the pill as a precaution... "better safe than sorry" I don't think! (though I guess probably not applicable to M_P)

They apply even pressure to the vessels in your lower limbs (i.e. below your knee) a DVT (blood clot) is caused by turbulent blood flow in vessels. The way veins force blood back to the heart is by the muscles constantly acting on them when you move. If you are stationary for too long this muscular action doesn't take place and blood will fall back with gravity to the nearest valve, causing turbulence.

The first time (6 Years ago) I went Oz I went Economy and I could just handle it, I was 13 though so alot smaller than I am now, When I went the next time (3 Years ago) I went Buisness Class there and that was nice, but on the way home when I checked in they said they had sold my seat so had upgraded me for free to First Class and First Class is unbelievable! Awesome, You have a flat bed, your own cubicle with sliding doors, e.t.c, undescribable, just awesome! But that free upgrade has spoilt me, Last time I went (At Christmas) I paid for First Class because I just could go back to the crampt conditions in Economy, It really has spolit me! The only advantage for me is that because I have family in Australia I don't pay for any accomodation, e.t.c, so the money I would spend on accomodation means I have abit left to spend on the flight...Thats the way I look at it anyway!

But the way I do it, Is I go from Birmingham to Dubai, and that is 7 hours, You get that over easy, so I go buisness class on that one, and its when you get to Dubia airport that kills you IMO, So then I got First Class from Dubia straight through to Melbourne (In the past I have gone 7 Hours to Dubia, 7 Hours to Singapore, 7 Hours to Melbourne!)

Anyway in reply to your questions in my experience;

1)do you get decent leg room

A slight bit more than normal but not a major amount.

2)do you get decent films

In my experience not matter what class you go you have your own TV sets and can chose whatever you want from there list, There is a fairly good choice.

3)is the food reasonable

I like airplane food anyway, so my answer is yes!

4)is it possible to get some kip

Hate to disappoint but no, And that is the reason I can't/would stuggle to go Economy after being spoilt by being upgrade to First Class that time.

5)does the boredom drive you close to suicide

Not too bad, IF you can manage to get some sleep! Or keep your mind of it somehow.

Anyway, hope the flight is good and hope you have I nice time in NZ!

Twiddle your feet and get up and walk around every so often. Stops you from getting a blood clot. Thats what the old dear always tells me to do.

  • Hold up the entire plan from embarking by taking your time to store your overhead baggage
  • Remove anyone else's bags if you feel it necessary
  • Keep your arms on the armrests as soon as you sit down to mark your territory
  • Recline your chair immediately so people behind you have difficulty getting in to their seat
  • Laugh loudly at the trite American sit-com while everyone near you is trying to sleep
  • Keep turning your light on if the laughter didn't wake them up
  • Let the sun in through the window as a last resort
  • During turbulence: Grip armrests and scream "Oh My God! We're all going to die!"
  • Right your chair as soon as the tea and coffee has been handed out
  • Sit in the toilet for the half an hour prior to the landing descent until the seatbelt light comes on
  • Undo your seat belt as soon as the wheels touch the ground
  • Try to get your luggage down from the locker while the plane is still taxiing

Out of all the warm-up places you needed to go to before the madness of Thailand, Amsterdam must have been perfect lol.

Blimey, what a coincidence...I've sat next to you on a plane and now we meet on FT.

In my experience, this is what I would say about each of them:

1) Only if you are sitting near the 'corridor' type thing (turn sideways and stretch your legs)

2) Yes but they repeat all the time and their isn't that much of a wide selection

3) The dessert is... the main food is horrible

4) Urm no

5) Urrrrr not really but I think it's exciting

Remember I'm 14 so an old man might or someone like you might have different views to it

I never bother with them. Make sure you get up once or twice for a little walk round the flight. Use this walk round to badger the air hostess about that 6th mini bottle of red wine which never materialised.

Then sleep for the rest of the flight.
