Daggers Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 Bid to ban 'racist' Tintin bookThe Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) is calling on high street shop Borders to pull a Tintin adventure from its shelves completely. Tintin in the Congo has already been moved to the adult section over complaints that its content is racist. A spokeswoman said the book contained "words of hideous racial prejudice, where the 'savage natives' look like monkeys and talk like imbeciles". Borders said they are committed to let their "customers make the choice". 'Racist claptrap' The store's spokesman added: "Naturally, some of the thousands of books and music selections we carry could be considered controversial or objectionable depending on individual political views, tastes and interests." "How and why do Borders think that it's okay to peddle such racist material?" said the CRE spokeswoman. "The only place that it might be acceptable for this to be displayed would be in a museum, with a big sign saying 'old-fashioned, racist claptrap.' "It's high time that they reconsidered their decision and removed this from their shelves," she added. The Tintin adventures were written by Belgian author Herge - real name Georges Prosper Remi - from 1929 until his death in 1983. He continued to revise his books after their publication, and admitted embarrassment over some of the views they expressed. A scene in Tintin in the Congo in which the eponymous hero gave a geography lesson to Africans about Belgium was later changed to a maths class. Well - I know what to buy Matt and a-fox for Xmas then
Kent Fox Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 "How and why do Borders think that it's okay to peddle such racist material?" said the CRE spokeswoman. Says it all really. Only the racist CRE could come up with this bollox. Not had a lot of good publicity have they of late?

Daggers Posted 12 July 2007 Author Posted 12 July 2007 I thought that was a extract from Tintin in Birmingham? Cock-off.
Zingari Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 'savage natives' look like monkeys and talk like imbeciles". i would have thought there would be no argument about this being racist ; seems it blatantly is to me
Daggers Posted 12 July 2007 Author Posted 12 July 2007 I'm as wet as any sandal-wearing, Observer sports/music supplement-reading, middle of the political road-ish tosser...but I'd love to see the CRE hit by a sodding meteorite. For the most part they are a jumped up collection of dickheads with sociology degrees and no life experience (outside of some traumatic childhood incident). The fact that they have to rely on the sporadic release of bogus topics such as this to the media in order to garner some coverage for their activities speaks volumes about their successes. If they spoke out on other issues as well: such as gangster rap, the prevalence of black-gang related inner-city violent crime, family abandonment by black fathers or racism between groups of non-white British residents then I may be more inclined to take them seriously. Until then, the only thing they do with guff like this is to legitimise (in their own heads) a sense of victimisation in people like Matt. Does it move anything forward? I don't think so.

Could not agree more! Well, I could but I refuse to on the grounds of being a middle of the political road-ish tosser.

COuldn't agree more, an excellant observation, a rarely discussed topic, one which is never seen as mainstream racism!!

I am an even wetter but aren't there better targets than a book that was written in a different age. The Bible does not say a word about prohibiting Slavery and actively condones it. Why is this not banned for similar reasons?
Guest Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 The CRE told me, when I was doing a school project, that racism against whites does not exist. I lost all respect for them at that point.
Manwell Pablo Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 The CRE told me, when I was doing a school project, that racism against whites does not exist. I lost all respect for them at that point. WTF? Really.
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 I think a certain CRE spokeswoman has too much time on her hands.
Guest Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 WTF? Really. Oh yes. Wound me up a treat, did that little gem.
Zingari Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 I think we're all agreed that there are more pressing issues regarding racial integration and relations but merely crying ; " dear me !!whatever next? its political correctness gone mad " every time does not alter the fact that much of what was written in colonial times was indeed very stereotypical racism and long past its sell by date. Yes , surely as was pointed out there is indeed alot worse things happening ( not just in black communities;re , absent fathers etc ) but why not rail against those things rather than the actions of some organisation dedicated to racial harmony ; will it really have any negative affect any of our lives if these books were removed from the shelves because of their content ? Why all the righteous indignation about how we are being deprived of some important historical literature ? I think it is fairly common knowledge of the political leanings of the author so I'd be quite unmoved if all his stuff went into the trash can Or maybe should we go back to letting the kids read "little black sambo" books?
Manwell Pablo Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 Oh yes. Wound me up a treat, did that little gem. How old were you?
Guest Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 How old were you? About 15. It was for a GCSE project, and I was allowed out of school to talk to someone and get some leaflets. Me being me, I related my own experiences of racial abuse and attacks, and that's when the guy told me that there is no racism against whites, and that it must have been "something else". Like I'm that stupid.
