FIFA vice-president to oppose England World Cup bid

Warner wants the 2018 World Cup to come to the Concacaf region

Fifa vice-president Jack Warner said he will battle to stop England hosting the 2018 World Cup.

His decision will be a blow to the Football Association, who were likely to plan a bid on the back of any change to the current selection procedures.

"If the World Cup were to go to Europe, I'm quite sure, with the English luck as it is, they won't get it," Warner told BBC World Service.

"There are moves to give it to England. I must fight that."

Warner, a member of the world football body's executive committee since 1983, added: "It will be Italy, Spain, or even France who will get the World Cup if it goes to Europe.

"Nobody in Europe likes England. England invented the sport but has never had made any impact on world football."

It is believed Fifa president Sepp Blatter is set to end the World Cup rotation policy when the executive committee meet later in the year.

Instead, the association are likely to approve a format that only precludes the continents that held the previous two World Cups from bidding again, which in 2018 would be Africa and South America.

Warner, president of Concacaf, added that he would battle to bring international football's premier tournament to his region, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.

"I really don't believe that we should just lay down and play dead to anyone who wants to take the World Cup from Concacaf," he said.

In July another Fifa executive committee member and former World Cup winner, German legend Franz Beckenbauer, offered his support to England hosting the 2018 World Cup.

He told BBC Five Live's Sportsweek: "There is no better country in Europe to host the World Cup in 2018. England is the favourite."

He added: "The most important thing is to end the rotation and bring the tournament back to Europe.

"The Premier League at the moment is the best league in Europe and the stadiums are outstanding.

"In my opinion, there is only one very serious candidate and it is England."

I read that and two things struck me.

1) His quotes of "There are moves to give it to England. I must fight that." Yet a sentence or two later "Nobody in Europe likes England." So nobody in Europe likes England, implying very little support for a 2018 bid yet there are great moves to give it to England. Sounds a little like a contradiction from a leader of world football, so clearly this man is a fool who is lucky enough to be riding the FIFA gravy train like it's Pamela Anderson.

2) More importantly, what happened to the level playing field of each bid being judged on its merits, or would that intefer with Mr Warner's rather obvious prejudiced views against England. I cannot understand how a man like this can make vice-president. Oh wait, yes, FIFA is a bag of corrupt cr*p filled with cronies ponying around and enjoying the money and benefits that football brings.

Also perhaps a little bit of positive discrimination?

Our country plays home to many of the "stars" of the world.

I'm disgusted by this comment.

If someone from the FA said this about another country or something I'm sure it would be different then.

willy puller.

worra Cvnt

"if its in Europe it will be either Italy, Spain or France"

All 3 nations have hosted the tournament in the last 30 years, whereas if we miss out it will be over 60 years since 1966

At least we've got Beckenbauer on our side.

It will be an absolute travesty of footy justice if we don't get 2018.

We have to have it. I was 4 when we won it and I would quite like to see us win it again before I die.

(Above assumption based on the fact that if successful in 2018, and if the same difference in years applies from '66 to the next time, I'll be 96 and most likely be dead)

So, who's in for an assassination attempt on Warner?? I'll need a number of shooters in different spots and we'll find a patsy to take the blame

Sounds to me like revenge for all the English journalists who keep catching him with his hand in the till.

Not much then

Plus only police that doesnt beat up fans for no reason because they can actually control almost all Hooliganism

F**king W***er!!! :@:@:@

The guy obviously hasn't got any clue what he is talking about... England hasn't made an impact!?! Thats virtually laughable!

1. We get all the best players to come here CAUSE WE HAVE THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD! Many people have said it and will continue too....

2. We consistantly challenge and are considered a threat at major championships be it at club level OR international level.

3. Am I mistaken or did we win the World Cup once and have been inside the top 10 teams internationally IN THE WORLD for the past God-knows how many years?

And then he goes on to sound even more stupid by suggesting that the World Cup could go back to France!?! THEY ONLY JUST FINISHED HOSTING THE DAMN THING IN '98!!!! IT WOULD ONLY BE 20 YEARS APART! The guy obviously doesn't like us much but then again, like he says, many people don't... is that a reason not to bring the World Cup to a nation that is fanatical about the sport, has FANTASTIC stadiums, great facilities and to be honest would probably be able to host a World Cup with their eyes closed and still make it a HUGE success???

Sorry guys but does it state what nationality this Warner guy is??

It must be a relief being a Scotland fan that you don't have to worry over where the World Cup is being held.I think you can safely pre-book that fortnights self catering in Kilmarnock for the next few Julys.

Well, whatever the reason for that outburst was, his comment on England and English football is a total disgrace in general and a huge letdown for his country and the FIFA's credibility.
