Lord Nibblington Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 Personally, I have no problems with MA resting a large number of players for the Forest game. Is a win against Forest nice? Yes. Is it in anyway the same importance as doing well in the league this season? I really don't think so.
BartonFox Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 Despite being so crap for 45 minutes we were still only 1-0 down. I believe the thought process had been to remove Newton and bring on Cort and shift to what we had on Saturday. Anyway it is all academic now. Allen has the huge task of lifting his emotionally drained self and players for the long trip to Plymouth, the best bit is the international break coming up.

Allen doesn't deal in excuses though, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Our first half performances away from home this season has been disgraceful. Not sure what's going on, but Plymouth isn't the sort of place where we'll be allowed to get away with that. Wondering whether his attentions on the transfer market will be as sharp as they would have been had Clive not suffered this horific incident. We are still lacking in some areas.
Thracian Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 That's garbage about MDV. If he'd have played and had a game as poor as he did against Palace or the rest of the team did last night then Allen would have got it in the neck for fielding him after he was on his knees at the end of the Watford game. I think it's pretty clear that Allen has no qualms about playing MDV and he rested him because he needed to, hopefully so that he can play an important part on Saturday at Plymouth.Weso and Hume are naturally extremely fit players. You can see this from the fitness drills they do in training. It's not the same for the likes of N'Gotty and de Vries. Rest? The season is four games old!. The only reason anyone's "rested" at this stage of the season is to give other squad members a game. I said our big squad would cause us problems in this way and it is. Even more so when we piss about with our system. Furthermore if MDV really cannot cope with two matches in four days we should have an alternative big front man. It's not complicated. And don't say we have one in Court or Sappleton. Cort is about as durable as contiboard furniture and Sappleton won't make the first team during my time as a fan.

You don't have to rest your players when they can barely stand any longer. You can pre empt it and try and keep them fresh you know! I do of sorts agree with you I saw no point in letting that liabilty Henderson back into the team, and no point in using Kenton. Newton and Porter I can understand getting games even though both were pretty horrid. In any case you can't stick to the entire XI for the whole 50 odd game season if you want to do well in the league, the team we put out could of and should of played alot better.

In theory you are right, 4 games in, you'd think players being given a rest is ridiculous but that depends on what you have at your disposal. Liverpool have been resting players recently. They've played as many games as us, plus our cup games compared to theirs are fairly un-important to us compared to Liverpool. You'd think resting players for them wouldn't be an option as they'd want their strongest team out for the premiership and Champions League Qualifiers. Comes down to the managers having a big squad of players that they have faith in. Whether you agree with that or not, that's the case. I think it's healthy to have a big squad as long as you can keep the players happy and that when players are rotated that the players coming in won't let the side down. Last night, we were crap. That could be put down to the side we put out, or just that we were crap, teams often have crap games. Especially a run of the mill team like ours.
Raj Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 Pre match i bumped into Alex kokop...What a bloody nice young gentleman he is! We (Mrs and I) were on the same row (3 seats away) as Tom from kasabian...he called my Mrs Darling as he went for a piss/coffee!!! Also say Walshie and Peter Jones...(Bloody top bloke that Peter Jones!) But the highlight was defo Alex! In my eyes any team MA put out v Forest should have competed well and put up a good show. They didn't. Forest were the better team...and that is saying something considering they have scored 1 league goal and not won a game yet. Don't know why but City just didn't get into this game,as alot of players were well under par! NOT GOOD!

I think a major factor in it was that forest wanted it more because of teh fact that we had quite a lot of forest fans playing for us, with morgan, wilson, bennett and commons all forest fans.
Ric Flair Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 It's an interesting decision MA's got to make.On the one hand he's declared that he doesn't have a team but a squad and that every player has a vital part to play. On the other hand we need to get into a winning mentality and to develop the confidence which will enable to restore our fortunes. Changing the team SHOULDN''T mean weakening the team but what to do? Normally I wouldn't have any concerns about changing a winning team. If a player was in my squad it would be because I think he's a good player and I'm sure that's exactly what MA thinks. It is also important to keep everyone fit and involved and conversely not to over use anyone. Generally the cup is a time to use fringe players as well. But, we're in the middle of an unbeaten three-match run. Normally that would be insignificant. But not at Leicester. Last time in happened was back in March. What I would do, however, is to try and stick to the same system. I won't criticise MA whether he changes the team or not - there's arguments both ways - but I liked the way we looked so balanced Saturday, and I've said many times that balance and the ability to pass/attack throughout the side is so important. In the end I would make changes and would show complete faith in "the squad". I'd be tempted to go: Fulop; Ka'ebi, N'Gotty, Stearman, Clarke; Clemence, Wesolowski, Sheehan; Odhiambo, Cort, Campbell. Subs: Henderson, Chambers, McAuley, Porter, McKay. My subs enable Cort to come on a see if he can do the job DeVries does and McKay gets the Academy spot I'd reserve for every game. To me you either have a small squad and play your strongest team or a bigger squad and involve everyone as far as possible. This is MA's perfect chance to show he believes in any team he selects...and to give people more and vital experience. In the end we will benefit from doing this. We have to be able to rely on a broad base of players to become and remain established as Championship challenger. It is no use not involving them and then expecting them to come in - unfit and unready - and expect them to cope in times of crisis. Thracian read that back from your good self and explain how your team you have chosen there would not be seen as resting other players, given that you are aware how well we played on Saturday and were inclined not to change the team too much as they had all played well. This is why people struggle to grasp your prattle, because you contradict yourself so much. It is entertaining though because amongst what you write is some knowledgable stuff. I look forward to reading your attempts of getting out of this.

Ric Flair Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 He only made one change less than Allen! It's not only that, it's even the stuff about how he thinks a big squad is perfect for becoming an established Championship outfit. Yet today, a big squad will always hamper Martin Allen. Priceless.

Ric Flair Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 And we also need another targetman apparently. He couldn't have stitched himself up better even if he tried. Everything he said in the Forest line-up thread he's gone totally against here. Does Thrac have amnesia?

Manwell Pablo Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 Haha. It's going to take a whole host of long words and crappy analogies and at least three mentions of Louis Dodds to get him out of this one.

The People's Hero Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 I'm looking for an analogy with a bit of casual, naive racism throw in. Perhaps about how well Odihambo has done for an ape, a primitive and limited, yet powerful and impressive beast.

Thracian Posted 29 August 2007 Posted 29 August 2007 He only made one change less than Allen! Not quite true. MDV would have played because Cort was still not quite fit. Also the system would have remained the same. Going back to 4-4-2 completely unbalanced what we had on Saturday. And if N'Gotty had been knackered, as was suggested, the McAuley would have played. One big guy, one mobile. My line-up would have forsaken wingers and enabled us to be stronger in central midfield where we were overrun for the first half hour.
