Brainy Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 BBC McLaren have been stripped of their points in the 2007 Formula One constructors' championship after the outcome of the 'spygate' row. The team was also hit with a record $100m (£49.2m) fine but drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso will be allowed to keep their points. The team's 2008 cars will have to be examined before they are allowed to race next season. McLaren team chief Ron Dennis is due to speak at a 1915 BST news conference. Full story to follow
Joe. Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Sorry for being stupid, I don't follow F1 much. What exactly happened in this 'Spygate'? That's a hell of a lot of cash...
DB11 Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 'Eh what did they do wrong? Ps. Before I read the thread and I'd just read the title I thought it was Steve McLaren :w00t:
The Stig Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 1 Thank god Lewis kept his points 2 OH MY GOD THATS ONE HUGE FINE, Mclaren must now fear for their future, how they will pay the fine without this years constructors points is beyond me, especially as there's a possibility of them being thrown out of NEXT YEARS championship as well.
Gené and Tonic Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Doubt this'll stick McLaren will appeal
Brainy Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 Why haven't the drivers been chucked out?
Geo V Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 They`ll appeal no doubt and they`ll come to some amicable solution. If nothing happens, it will make an amazing Championship run-in as Hamilton and Alonso can really race each other with no fear about crashing and messing up the constructors title.
David O'Leary Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Why haven't the drivers been chucked out? because the drivers haven't done anything wrong, its the team's fault
Brainy Posted 13 September 2007 Author Posted 13 September 2007 Yes, and they've been winning races with 'somebody elses' car.
filbertway Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Yes, and they've been winning races with 'somebody elses' car. WHich is the teams fault and they are being punished? The driver's can only drive what they're given.
Floating Fox Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 If they're going to Dock the team, do it to the drivers as well. It's just not consistant to do otherwise, I know you'all gonna say that the drivers did nothing wrong but thats not the point! Either have all points & fine, or no points & fine. Not half way inbetween. The cash involved is huge, and way beyond what they deserved imo. Just missing out on this years constructors money is bad enough!
Flynny Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 The fine is 100 million dollars LESS whatever they'd have won at the end of this season. So it might be only a third or so of that amount really.
MPH Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Why haven't the drivers been chucked out? because it wasnt actually the drivers doing the spying.. behind the scenes team
MPH Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 they'll appeal and somthing will change im sure
Raj Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 'Eh what did they do wrong? Ps. Before I read the thread and I'd just read the title I thought it was Steve McLaren :w00t:  DB11...you are a leg end!
Suffolk_fox Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Hmmm, there's something in this that we don't know - that is one harsh punishment for finding a Ferrari manual in an ex McLaren engineer's house.
Raj Posted 14 September 2007 Posted 14 September 2007 Twat more like. Well you could put it that way if you like!!!!!
Brainy Posted 14 September 2007 Author Posted 14 September 2007 WHich is the teams fault and they are being punished? The driver's can only drive what they're given. It doesn't matter what they have done. Blame the team.
James. Posted 14 September 2007 Posted 14 September 2007 I want to know where this $100m is going to go. Into the pockets of the FIA? Riiight. They should give it to charity. Some kind of driving school for disadvantaged kids or some such thing, if it exists.
hairy Posted 14 September 2007 Posted 14 September 2007 They will appeal. Get it reduced and the only people to profit will be the lawyers and no doubt Bernie Ecclestone.
billabob Posted 14 September 2007 Posted 14 September 2007 Right then lets clear this up a bit as it seems people are only being told little bits and getting confused! Mclaren have been fined and punished for what would seem that they lied to the council last time round in saying that the team new nothing about the info but new evidence came to light from emails and tapped phone lines that they did know something thus lying to the council, the actual facts and evidence are going to be shown today at a press conferance. The drivers remain unpunished because the FIA needed a way to get more informaton but drivers arn't going to land there own team in it and get sacked so the FIA told them they would be granted imunity from any punishment if they provided evidence but if they didnt and evidence came through they did now something they could lose their super licence and thus not be able to race anymore! hope that clears it up a bit folks!
