bigneville Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Hmmm, I'm now even more concerned. Many of the posts in here suggested we needed to give him a chance (fair point, I created the thread very near the start of last season). As far as I'm concerned he's had that chance and not taken it.When I've seen him play (admittedly not for awhile) I've been impressed by his pace (obvious) and the way he would create space with his diagonal runs coming in from wide. That's not enough though, he needs to score goals and I'm really starting to believe that even in League One he may be out of his depth. People also suggested he would do better playing in a team with proper wingers. We have that now so do we hold out for another season? In my opinion not strong enough, not skilful enough and not a finisher. Anyone care to defend him? Nope. Last night was a massive chance for him to show Pearson that he is worthy of a place in the starting line up. Although I didn't go down, I listened online and have read the match reviews. The bloke simply didn't seem to want it. With hungry youngsters and other strikers, who have decided to start scoring. Campbell should be moving down the pecking order and quick. Unless a remarkable turn around (which I highly doubt), the bloke doesn't want to be here, and should be looking to move on. DJ Campbell simply has had too many chances to prove he can score goals. A striker who isn't scoring and isn't looking bothered about this, should be moved on and quickly. Whether anyone would take him on his current form and state, is a different matter.
DanTheFox07 Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Think he turn`s up to get paid at this club........ attitude has been wrong since he joined the club, can`t stay fit! can`t hit a barn door. I think pearson will soon get bored and offload him will be lucky if we recoup 2p of the 1.6mill we spent on him.
Simi Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Now we've signed Dickov, his existence is becoming even more worthless. Last night Dickov did what Campell should have been doing for months. Gambling. Howard had one of his better games last night and it was a shame that DJ wasn't on it as I reckon he'd of had a bit of joy otherwise. When we bought Dickov on, you could see his inteligence. He was gambling for the near post on a cross, something we've not had. He was alert to the flick ons and managed to get a shot or two away. I think he's about last in the pecking order now.
Daggers Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I have a gut feeling about Campbell that he'll score goals, lots of them. I don't know why I have this feeling because so far he's been fairly disappointing in his general performances and also I didn't rate him before he came here. But I think he'll be start to bang them in. People have been saying that about Fryatt for two years and maybe he's on the cusp of being able to do it - Campbell has failed to impress me in a single match I've seen him play...and I simply can't see it happening for him. People allude to his cost as if it inferred some guarantee of future goals - it doesn't. The man's head hasn't been in the game since Allen got kicked out and didn't seem to have been sorted pre-season. I agree that he makes intelligent runs - but his job is to score goals, lots of them. Not to hold up play, not to create spaces for others to exploit; goals, nothing less. He doesn't link well with any other striker at the club and he sulks - I've little time for him anymore.
James. Posted 13 August 2008 Author Posted 13 August 2008 Whether anyone would take him on his current form and state, is a different matter. Outside of Leicester I reckon people will still kind of rate him. Fortunately for us I think he is still viewed as the non-league player that came good and made a name for himself at Birmingham. His year or so at Leicester won't be at the forefront of people's minds. That could all change by the middle to end of this season, I would hope to cash in now rather than see him go for nothing later in the season.

Absolutely, my post you have quoted was a year old! My opinion of him, which was never very high before he signed, has lowered even more since. He's gaffney, get rid.
AndyBrew Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I logged in specifically to talk about DJ and low and behold there's already a post about him !!! He's always in the wrong place, he doesn't anticipate the game, he appears to be 10 yards behind when he is going in the correct direction, he has no strength, he's affraid to shoot, he can't hold the ball up and appears to be unable to jump or head the ball..... apart from that I'm a big fan shocking display last night, I really do hope he comes good but I can't see it myself

FilboFox Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 AND... he can't stay onside for shit for what I can remember from last year...
sdb Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 he's a form player like 99% of strikers - give him a run of games and he'll look a player again as soon as he scores. everybody seemed to want Fryatt out until Sat evening. I appreciate DJ is obviously looking v poor (wasnt there last night) but form is temporary and he'll come good eventually (although maybe not with us!!)
renards Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I've always said he is a worse buy than Akinbadbuy We bought AA at a time when a new sky deal had just been introduced and there was shed loads of money about, teams consiquently jacked up the price for players. In relative terms we were shafted.
renards Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 You can't defend anyone who has performed as poorly as he has considering he cost roughly £1.6 million. He is fast becoming a flop. People slate Howard, but I'd have him in the team over DJ any day of the week. Someone ought to start a Howard appreciation society. At what point has he not been a flop?
FleckneyFox Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I think we should get rid, he's clearly not good enough and theres no point having him sit on the bench. I'd rather have Ashley Chambers when he's back who's a similar player but not as lightweight.
demon_dog Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Was talking to a guy who sat behind the dugout last night after the game. He told me that after ten minutes Pearson was berating DJ and said that he was really trying his patience. Suspect Pearson will not give him many (if any) more chances to prove his worth. IMO the sooner we get rid of the better. I'll admit that prior to the start of this season I thought the same about Fryatt, as many others did. The difference is we can now all see a leaner, more hungry striker in Fryatt, it's a shame DJ doesn't seem to have improved.
Corky Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Bloody awful. Got in the way of one pass from Adams, did nothing of note. Dickov completely livened things up. Should be ahead of Campbell in the pecking order.

Sooper Steve's shin Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Fryatt's always had two things going for him: the initial impact he made and a general ability to look like someone who can play football (i.e. knows how to control the ball and intelligent enough to get into decent positions). DJ hasn't had either of these and so, quite rightly, most people have no time for him. I would take any offer for Campbell to get him off our wage bill, but we can all write off £1m+ of someone else's money. If I was Milan, I would personally be a bit peeved if we couldn't recoup something and would want to see him in the team to start paying off some of the outlay. I am not saying that's what MM has done (or will do) but if it was my money being spent I would hate to see it being wasted like we have been doing over the last 18 months.
Thracian Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I wouldn't write Campbell off at all. He's a totally different kind of player to our other strikers and both Hume and Fryatt have gone for much longer periods than Campbell without a goal. DJ has never quite been a fans favourite as some players are but I'm quite sure he's capable of hitting a run of form and building some confidence just as much as Fryatt. This season represents a new start for DJ after a lengthy period when he was never properly fit. Just think back to how Fryatt was affected by his injury. Two years he underperformed. Don't get me wrong. I'm as concerned as everyone else about his form and his lack of goal threat but we're early in the seson yet and perhaps we should cut him some slack, at least for the time being.
Darkzzz_ Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I am not going as far as writing him off. But I would also rather have Howard in the team. DJ looks very lacklustre and he does not seem to care. I genuinely hope I am wrong but for me he is certainly not repaying his transfer fee. Howard and Fryatt showed some good movement on saturday and Howard sounded good last night. Please don't get me wrong, I am not saying Howard is a world beater, I just think he gets targeted a hell of a lot. There is room for improvement, but bloody hell, he is a lot better than most of the strikers we have had down the years.
Ultra Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 i think that's a little too far!! Not at all. Akinbiyi was actually quite decent for half a season, and took us to the Premier League top six. Campbell will NEVER reach those heights. The more I see of him, the more I understand why Mandaric was so eager to give Allen the bullet. Under Pearson, some players (eg Fryatt) have worked to improve their game. Campbell hasn't.

Steady. Akinbiyi taking us to the top six is hardly worth comparing to Campbell not being able to do that. Fair enough if you don't rate him, I'm sure you could come up with a better argument though.

I hate DJ, because last season when i was saying give Fryatt a run. Everyone was shooting it down and ranting on how DJ is so much better. I beleive people want Fryatt to fail here.
