I can't be bothered to manufacture points from tonight.

Hume was disappointing, his head hung low and his game was way off.

DJ was pointless, he contributed nothing when he came on, he was invisible.

Everyone else played their socks off and I can ask for nothing more.

Fulop 9 (It was truly hard to fault him. Terrific tip over from Maloney in the first half, outstanding reflex save from Harewood's close-range header in the second followed by another excellent save from Maloney's inswinging free-kick. On top of that were a timely punched clearance and some generally authoritative general work).

Chambers 6 (Played his part but I didn't think he was at his best).

McAuley 7.5 (Won plenty in the air, attacked the ball and stayed tight)

N'Gotty 8.5 (An outstanding influence.Totally in command and steadied all around him)

Kisnorbo 7.5 (Distribution was awful first half but second he really made some important interceptions as the pressure mounted. Very close to giving away a silly penalty though.)

Mattock 7.5 (Largely ineffective trying to get forward in the first half apart from a couple of half decent crosses but his defensive work in the second half, particularly when Young came on, was as good as I've seen from him. His timing and composure were excellent)

Stearman 7 (Important interceptions and clearances and forever in the thick of things. Only his sometimes careless distribution warranted criticism).

Kishishev 6.5 (Workmanlike but showed himself to be another old timer who makes mistakes and tries to blame them on others. Once when faced with a choice of two simple passes he passed the ball tamely between the two and again when inexplicably trying to pass backwards he cocked up and immediately tried to shift the blame.)

Clemence 7.5 (Urged the team not to fall back too far and not to lose their concentration as pressure mounted near the end. Was generally influential although rarely in a creative way).

Hume 6.5 (Typically determined but unable to make much impression as an attacker)

Fryatt 7.5 (Generally made his presence felt despite precious little service and scored his priceless and professionally taken goal. Any goal that wins a game deserves a high mark and it was by no means an easy opportunity to finish. Still looked short of pace and strength against a generally dominant Villa defence who could have been forgiven for thinking they'd got the night off. But Fryatt's paid to score and that's hat he did).

subs:

Campbell 6 (Final ball for Fryatt's goal lifted his rating)

Maybury 5 (Maintained the discipline in midfield. Nothing more)

Kenton 5 (Similar to Maybury really. Just served as reinforcement as Villa mounted their waves of attacks in the closing stages).

Entertainment value: 5 (Apart from being a memorable victory, the joy of the goal and the drama of whether we could hold out, it was pretty grim fare).

Megson 9 (In terms of what Megson is all about this was a classic. It was the textbook smash and grab but it was clear what Megson's tactics were and even more clear that every player knew precisely what his job was. Collecively they achieved what they set out to do and, despite the pressure at the end, I never thought Leicester looked like cracking).

Glad to see his first genuinely solid performance of the season. That tackle towards the end was perfect.

Kisnorbo 8..did everything required

N'Gotty 8 rock like

McAuley 7.5 solid

Stearman 7.5 again, did the job

Chambers...8 much under-rated I feel in CM..ran his socks off.He was up in support of Fryatt for the goal which shows how fit he is

Clemence 8 cool calm leader

Kishishev 6.5...a bit of the pace I felt, but solid enough

Hume 6.5 good to see him back up top, but a touch sluggish

Fryatt 7.5 cool finish for the goal, a little bit frustrating in general play

Sitting high in the North stand, I am prepared to stand corrected if it was Stearman. Easy to confuse him and Campbell (time for bed....) isn't it?

Christ Almighty! It takes a lot to please you, Thracian.

Now I wasn't there, and can only base an opinion on what I was reading on FT, Match Live and Live Chat, but it seemed to me that although we were under pressure a fair bit, we were getting stuck in and having a good go back at them. Based on the fact that we were away and against a Prem team who mullered Everton all over the park at the weekend, I would have thought it would have been quite entertaining..

Perhaps you can put down what warrants an entertainment level of 7. And upwards...

It did say on the radio that it was DJ, both fingy and walshy praised his pass!

Campbell, Stearman or Chambers.

I am starting to see a pattern here.

No-one knows because no-one expected us to score and weren't watching the bloody game.

So we'll flip coins, or one round of Scissors, Paper, Rock.

Fulop – 9

Made 2 or 3 match winning saves

stearman – 7

Good to see him back in the team. A couple of times he gave possession away clearing the ball but was still part of the overall defence make-up

ngotty – 8

won everything. Kept the pieces together. The missing part of the jigsaw. Keep him here!!!!

kisnorbo - 8

good performance. Tough, strong when required

mcauley – 8 – similar to kisnorbo. Strong and won his headers. Better with a 3rd man in central defence

mattock – 7 – some crucial interceptions in second helf. Got up and down the line well

clemence – 7 – superb work.

kishishev – 6 – poor distribution but hard graft. He’ll have to perform better to edge a fit wesolowski out of the reckoning

chambers -7 – unsung hero. Made things tough for villa in midfield keep things compact closing players down

hume – 6 – not his best but still 110%

fryatt - 6 – still finding feet but a good finish and good to see him score again

subs

with maybury and Kenton back in the team what does that mean about the new signings?

Megsons tactics were spot on. 5-3-2 is definitely the way forward. He said he needed to find the players a way that suited them. That was the case last night!!!

it was an o'neill-esque performance harking back to the resolute defensive displays against arsenal and villa in the cups in 99-2000 season

Uh oh. Different-game-to-everyone-else syndrome again...

Too busy trying to work out how not to fall off the upper tier if we scored, and not watching the game... :D

I must be turning into Thracian. We only had about two shots all game. I'm just incredibly relieved Fryatt scored.

On the other hand I did say yesterday that sort of performance was the only way we were going to get anything from that game. In an open match, they'd have destroyed us.

Agreed. I think i'm the only one who isn't even slightly happy with last night. I have no satisfaction from winning football matches with that many defenders in the side. I won't and can't get excited about that. It ruins the epitomy of why I watch football. Can't help that and won't apologise for being a miserable twat. I fear for my mood levels under Megson right now, but I can't walk away.
