breadandcheese Posted 27 September 2007 Posted 27 September 2007 Fulop - 8 McAuley - 8 N'Gotty - 7.5 Kisnorbo - 7 Stearman - 6.5 Mattock - 7 Kishishev - 7 Clemence - 8 Chambers - 7 Hume - 7 Fryatt - 7 Subs Campbell - 6 Maybury - 6 Kenton - 6 Overall Credit for the result should go to Megson. I'm not a big fan of his but credit where it is due. He set the team up perfectly for this match in the 3-5-2, giving us the strength down the middle which we needed. I wouldn't say anyone player stood head and shoulders above anybody else, it was a true team performance, as an effective unit. I was also quite surprised at how weak Villa were attacking down the flanks, which played into our hands no-end. You could tell from the way their players controlled the ball that they had a bit of quality, but they just couldn't break us down. Bit concerned by the need to give silly free-kicks around the box in the last few minutes, but it didn't matter because nothing was going to get through last night. Well done Megson, you got the tactics spot on. Fair play to you.
Kent Fox Posted 27 September 2007 Posted 27 September 2007 I must be turning into Thracian. We only had about two shots all game. I'm just incredibly relieved Fryatt scored. On the other hand I did say yesterday that sort of performance was the only way we were going to get anything from that game. In an open match, they'd have destroyed us. Agreed. I think i'm the only one who isn't even slightly happy with last night. I have no satisfaction from winning football matches with that many defenders in the side. I won't and can't get excited about that. It ruins the epitomy of why I watch football. Can't help that and won't apologise for being a miserable twat. I fear for my mood levels under Megson right now, but I can't walk away. Sorry, Guys, but I find that un-fecking-believable! We won. It was a grind and a defensive grind but we won. You are being very Thracian-esque and really, you have got to make an effort to be happy albeit slightly.

Megson set the team up to do a job. I agree, it'll be interesting to see how we play against a team at home, because our wingbacks only got forward twice all game (and by that I mean Mattock got forward twice). When we have to break teams down we will have to look again at which players to play, but certainly, I think we need the strength down the middle, which we had with the 3 centre backs and the 3 central midfielders.

I celebrated the goal and celebrated the win but it's a different thing celebrating a win and celebrating a performance. I am not moaning about the tactics - as I said yesterday, they were the best way to win that game - but it means virtually nil going into the Stoke game where we will actually have to show some attacking endeavour and not pack the side with defenders.

It will indeed. I think the 5 at the back or 3 centre halves, whichever way you look at it, is the way forward for this team. But we need more creativity in midfield and it's essential we have more than one player on the bench who can attack, had we gone 1 or 2 nil down last night, it would have been game over and Megson's tactics would have been a disgrace, like they were at Charlton, bringing defenders on at 2-0 down is not the way forward. He's a safety first manager, I can almost stomach that as long as he covers all situations. So if the buffet defence get's plowd in to, then at least he can make changes and bring on more creativity to get back in to the game. He wouldn't have been able to do that last night and he couldn't do it at Charlton either. That's why I am not getting excited about last night, there was no plan b.

I have just said somewhere else that I think Stoke will be a draw - and a boring one at that. It could be argued that the poor performance against Charlton was down to the effects of a hard fought win at F****t. Subsequently, a hard grind at the Villa might mean poor on Saturday. Unless GM is a bit more adventurous and tries Kaebi / Ferriera to see how they fit into a 3-5-2 - if that's what he prefers to play. So I am not expecting much this weekend. If we get a win, I'll be well chuffed. I just don't think it will happen.

We're 21st in the league and we should be fully focused on winning games, especially at home against the likes of Stoke.

Admittedly, we were trying to work out what we would have done if we went 1 down in the car on the way home but that conversation lasted less than a minute as we celebrated and it's all academic anyway. We've got a much more important game against Stoke next so let's see what personnel he plays. Ideally I'd like to see Chambers play at right wingback and maybe Kaebi (if he's as good as we hope) moved into the midfield, but then again, if I'd picked the team last night, we'd probably have got hammered so that's why I'm an armchair manager.

I'd say he favours Stearman and Mattock there who have come through the ranks as defenders.

I am agreeing with you but you don't need to be overexcited - just pleased 21st in the league but still only 2 wins from Top 6. It is too early to start worrying yet, IMO. We should be beating Stoke - 100%. But haven't they been a bit of a bogey for us in the past?? Dunno - not checked previous head-to-heads. I just think we will under-perform and draw. We will have to agree to differ on excitement levels for now.

And that is what they are - defenders. What I am saying, or trying to, is that we cannot carry on with Mattock & Stearz so therefore, when we are playing a team we should be thumping, try them. I think they will fit into the system, but the other 9 need to 100% focused on their roles to accomodate them. I think GM will have no option other than to play them at some point. Kaebi is doing well in the Reseves, by all accounts and Ferriera is not fully match fit apparently.

Of course I'm pleased we won and it was a great result to get there but I'm not buzzing at all today in the same way I was after the Forest game. I have nothing against defensive football in the right circumstances, I was defending (no pun intended) our performance against Plymouth under a barrage of nonsense from people who hadn't even been to the game and last night's approach was the correct one if the sole aim was to win the game. I'm just talking about the positives you take into the next game. I couldn't see any from an attacking point of view last night.

STUHILL Posted 27 September 2007 Posted 27 September 2007 I'm not even going to rate us, I thought It was a shocking game of football. If Villa had of had any kind of quality last night, then we would have got beat easily. We didn't create anything, other than the goal. I can't believe you are giving our players such high marks. We couldn't pass, all we did was clear it and hoof it up field. Then when we scored, going ultra defensive. If Villa had of equalised, everyone would be livid with Megson for bringing on Maybury and Kenton. If we play like that every week, yeh we may become hard to beat but my god, we are very rarely going to score!!! Only reason I wasn't embarrased, was that Villa strangely enough were just as bad!
FrankieWorthoYaggedMyWife Posted 27 September 2007 Posted 27 September 2007 Is it some kind of record to finish a match with 8 defenders on the pitch?

Ihave read a lot of your posts over the past year or so and many are worthy of credit. After this however im starting to think god spoiled a good ar$e hole when he put teeth in your mouth. Premiership quality attack mate, so lets only play 4 defenders in the last 10 when we are 1 nil up away from home. Read your post again and see how ridiculous it sounds.

Shroomjuice Posted 27 September 2007 Posted 27 September 2007 Just because we scored against a Premiership team don't mean we've got a Premiership quality attack.Hammond and De Vries netted against Spurs last season would you say they was Premiership quality? No. fooking Moron. Read the post, I ment VILLA not us.
