Finnegan Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 fook off am I going anywhere near the Tottenham High Road at any time of day. If I'm not mugged, I'll get dragged into some torture basement where they'll try and get my bank details out of me. These companies make so much money its unbelievable and we put about ten claims a week and the bloke who I am partners with on this venture only does this as a sidetrack at present! You recruiting at the moment?
Smudge Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 Probably the safest way is to go to your bank. However, you could consider paying your debts off with your current credit card then transfer the balance to an account that offers 0% for up to 15 months. That's dangerous if you go past that date but it does give you time to sort yourself out. See here for options. If your parents have some equity in their house, they might take out an equity loan for you for which you have to make the repayment. The interest on an equity loan is substantially less than cedit cards. My daughter got into bind with multiple credit cards and I did just that. She paid me monthly and I paid the debt, the benefit to me was that I was able to take advantage of the tax writeoff for the interest.
Daggers Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 I have found a surefire way to make ends meet and put food on the table - I work two minimum wage jobs. You could always try getting a job? Wacky, left-field solutions are my forte.
Finnegan Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 I've toyed with the idea of a second job, but I'd probably just be better off getting a "proper" job. Thing is, I'm pretty sure I'll be moving out of London. I'm depressed here, it's a bit of a soul destroying place, I don't want to leave my uni friends but I don't want to stay here either. So no point 'til I get back to Lestoh for now. It'll just be a case of beg, borrow, steal, pay up what's owed and get the fook out I suppose.
hebangsthedrums Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 Bonus bagging is an option for a bit of cash, trouble is you have to be able to risk an initial 50 squid - google is your friend - pm for help. It made me 1400 in my last year of uni after crimbo and kept me afloat. If you can do without 50squid for a week or so there is a casino called yukongold that has a moneyback offer - basically you put in 50 and if you lose it within 24 hrs you can claim a refund. All you do is play 9 hands of blackjack then stick your remaining funds on the tenth hand (t&c state 10 bets minimum to claim refund). If you will voila you've made 50ish quid, if you lose fill out th eclaim form then when they refund you the 50 withdraw it. I made 52 and a couple of my housemates made similar one lost but claimed it back no hassle.
BigGibbo Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 So I owe Burton's about £90 and utilities about £60, which'll leave me with about £50 overdraft left. My remaining income for the month's about £280. My rent is £300, I have to eat, travel and generally afford to exist and have just been told we have to pay £1200 in Council Tax with our right to pay in installments revoked.Wooo! ....  Burtons hehe Neh Anyway keeping the roof over your head is always the number one priority the rest can wait Unfortunately this is about when going on the razzle starts to rapidly drop down the list of priorities
Daggers Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 I've toyed with the idea of a second job, but I'd probably just be better off getting a "proper" job. London has plenty of opportunities to start up your own business, advertise it locally and earn big bucks...
Monk Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 Its a very tricky situation mate and I hope you can wriggle your way out of it. Number 1 - Council tax (the only one you can get jailed for if you don't pay it). Call them and tell them your situation. If you are in a house of all students you should not be paying council tax. If the others in the house are not students then to be honest its them thats liable for it, not you (though the council wouldnt see it that way) Number 2 - Your bank account. Alliance and Leicester offer £2500 o/d are you really at that limit? Go and talk to them see if there's anything they can do. If not, then threaten to move your account elsewhere. Number 3 - If all else fails try your student union or student finances department. They may be able to offer a grant of some kind, or at least some advice. I guess your other options if that fails is 1- take a year off and work during that year 2- get an extra job now and just work really hard to make ends meet until the summer holidays, when you get out and cut your costs.
Geo V Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 fook off am I going anywhere near the Tottenham High Road at any time of day. If I'm not mugged, I'll get dragged into some torture basement where they'll try and get my bank details out of me.You recruiting at the moment? its only a small internet based business at the moment mate. As for Tottenham High Road, I used to work around the corner where Lordship Lane crosses with the A10 (that big ugly glass building) and we would have about 10 dodgy credit cards attempted to be passed through every week. I was threatened to be set on fire one day by a happy customer too but the best memory of the area was when we played down Lansdown Road in Tottenham (not Ireland ) at the 5 a side pitches aptly called The Pits All my mates would not play unless there car was parked within site of there pitch . Every week it was the same thing, some poor sod or 3 had there car windows put in as the locals tried to swipe whatever they could.
Finnegan Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 Such a dive, man. I mean I don't exactly love where I live (Bowes Park way, near Bounds Green station) but it's a lot better than down in the midst of Wood Green where I was before. What I'd give for a trendy condo in Crouch End.

What I'd give for a trendy condo in Crouch End. Bounds Green is alright. If you gamble you would have seen me frequent the bookies opposite the station on many an occasion a few years back . Im not far from there in Southgate which I must admit would be a great place to live when you are 21 with all these colleges (Barnet, Southgate) and Middlesex University campus` around (Trent Park, Cat Hill etc). Its full of young talent but as a washed up 35 year old, the best I can get these days are around 25yo. Oh if only I could turn back the clock
Finnegan Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 Too many kids in Southgate. All the schools empty out the same time I'm usually coming back from Trent Park and fooking hell do they half clog up the transport with their screaming, heush. But I do love me a bit of Trent Park though, blinding campus. I'll miss it.
Geo V Posted 9 October 2007 Posted 9 October 2007 I live around the corner from there just around the corner from the Chicken Shed theatre . So what are you doing after Trent Park? Are you staying in the shitehole that is known as London?
Finnegan Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 I think the likeliest situation is that I'll go back to Leicester and get my head sorted, pay off my debts, my overdraft and work up a bit of money before deciding where to go from there. At least until my flatmates have finished uni and we can think about all moving into somewhere as adults.

I don't know how old you are but I suggest getting a few quid together and go traveling so you don't end up like me and go abroad for months on end when I should really be closer to home
Finnegan Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 I'm a sociable creature, but a bit of a shy one at times. I need people, but I don't make friends too quickly - traveling'd be a nightmare for me unless I managed to rope at least two or three of my friends into it first. Need to get myself relatively debtless before I start getting grand designs. The idea is still to actually get to uni and do something halfway decent, I didn't drop out because I didn't want to do uni.

I take it you are still relatively young so taking a year out to make some money and pay some debts off is a sensible way to do it. London is a barsteward place to do that though as you well know with the prices for travel and accommodation at silly levels but I wish you well with whatever you decide to do.
Finnegan Posted 9 October 2007 Author Posted 9 October 2007 Yeah, I mean I pay like a fiver a day just to get to work, bit barmy. I'm twenty-one, btw.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 10 October 2007 Posted 10 October 2007 Unsecured Debt ie credit card, utility bill I work for a debt collection company hear in Aus dealing with taking legal action on credit cards and personal loans, Althought processes would be slightly different as baliffs and Sheriffs only accure at the very end of the process after court but hear goes, If you own nothing but the basic essentials you should be fine over hear we would never consider take accounts to court as it is too costly unless they owned a property, shares, fancy car or working full time earning a decent wage. The normal process over here is everything is negiotable your best to speak to them and try and negiotiate a reduced settelment. The longer they go with out having money paid on the account the more likely you are to get a substantial discount some times half the orginal debt, But make sure it doesn't go to a specialised debt collecton agency because sometimes with out notifying you they will start chargeing intrest and fees. -only give them a mobile number -Give them as little info as possible the less they know the better -Claim poor -They may credit list you and finace will be a problem but negiate to get it back once paid -Any reduced settlements get it in writeing before you pay a reduced settelment -claim you are borrowing the money off parents or relos and they can only get together amount of the settlement Secured debt ie car on finace, property Pay them or give it back before it gets to costly
