Ian Holloway has admitted that the chance to manage Leicester was too good an opportunity to turn down.

Holloway resigned as Plymouth boss on Wednesday and has since held talks with Leicester, who are looking for a new manager after Gary Megson quit the club in October to join Bolton.

The former Bristol Rovers and Queens Park Rangers boss has admitted his regret at leaving Plymouth, but he feels the Leicester job is the new challenge he needs in his 11-year managerial career.

"It's a pretty difficult situation for me, Holloway told Sky Sports News.

Stereotype

"But I feel like I was getting stereotyped a little bit as having no money to spend and I'm sick and fed up of losing my best players all the time because they out-grow what I can pay them.

"I'm not sure how it will happen here (Leicester) and it is something I don't feel I could turn down. For 11 years I've always been the bridesmaid, never the bride for this type of thing.

"It's a challenge and everybody needs a challenge, but that doesn't belittle the relationships I've had before.

"I don't know what the people at Plymouth will be feeling about me, but I'm ever so sorry. I just felt my heart wasn't there when I knew that this opportunity might be here."

Delight

Plymouth have yet to accept Holloway's resignation and the 44-year-old admits the contractual dealings are out of his hands and that he is not certain of taking charge of Leicester for Saturday's clash with Bristol City.

"That (contractual compensation) is beyond me," added Holloway. All I am is a football manager. That's something the people above me who are more experienced will have to sort out."

Meanwhile, Leicester chairman Milan Mandaric has admitted his delight at nearing a deal for Holloway and he insists Plymouth will be paid correct compensation.

"The most important thing is to get the right guy and if we can get Ian we will have the right guy," added Mandaric.

"But again there is dialogue and necessary communication with Plymouth and I am quite sure we will sort it out without a big commotion or anything like that.

Well it looks as though we're finally getting our man.

I'm pretty pleased with the appointment, let's hope he can do what he did at Plymouth with us. Time wil tell, I just hope Mandaric gives him it.

He needs to look at what he's got in the squad and use it wisely, something the previous managers haven't done so far in my opinion.
