Phil Hill, America’s first Formula 1 world champion, has died at the age of 81.

Ferrari’s 1961 title-winning driver passed away in a California hospital on Thursday of complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Hill was born in Miami, Florida on April 20th 1927, before his family moved to Santa Monica, and he later went on to study business administration at university before dropping out to pursue his growing love of motorsport.

Initially working as a mechanic and salesman in Los Angles, Hill began competing in sports car races in the US.

In 1955 he joined Ferrari’s line-up at the Le Mans 24 Hours and went on the win the endurance event three times in 1958, ’61 and ’62.

He made his Formula 1 debut in a Maserati 250F at the French Grand Prix shortly after his first Le Mans victory and was soon promoted to a drive at Ferrari following the deaths of Luigi Musso and Peter Collins.

Hill spent the next four years at Ferrari, taking each of his three grand prix victories with the team (the first in 1960 at Monza) – two of which came in his 1961 championship-winning campaign.

However his clinching of the title in the season’s penultimate round at Monza came in tragic circumstances after his German team-mate Count Wolfgang von Trips was killed during the race.

After leaving Ferrari in 1962, he spent two more seasons in the sport before retiring in 1964 following 48 starts, three victories, six pole positions and 16 podiums.

He went on to establish a successful car restoration business in his native California after his retirement and while since joined by Mario Andretti as an American to have won the F1 world championship, remains the only US-born winner.

I've seen the first pics of the 2009 car. It's really ugly. The back wings are higher and the front wings are lower. I'm all for the return of slicks and the KERS system. The also have a lever to adjust the wings while driving.

Belgian Gp this weekend, surely this is the race where Raikkonen ends his drought, he's not won since April !

If you got that from Digital Spy or anywhere like that my advice would be ignore it. The rumours on the interent change weekly.

I've not seen that, if it's by a certain Charles Sale, he has so far said that

Jeremy Clarkson

Richard Hammond

Adrian Chiles

Martin Brundle

and now Jake Humphrey

Are all the faveourites.

My team would be

Presenter - Georgie Thompson, does the A1gp coverage plus she's fit

Commentators - David Croft ( From 5live and GP2 on ITV) & Martin Brundle, or Ben Edwards & John Watson. Not James Allen please

Pundits: Anyone but Mark Blundell, can't stand the guy. Don't think Coulthard would be anygood either.

I would like Hammond but don't see it happening as he hates F1.

And I wouldn't mind Jake Humphries but it just wouldn't feel right...

Why not bring the Rosenthal guy to BBC?

I met Richard Hammond in the summer and spoke to him about it. It won't be him, 100% not, he has a young family and says he already spends too much time away from them. He's a great bloke by the way.

Anyway my team

Presenter: Jim Rosenthal

Commentators: Ben Edwards and Martin Brundle

Pundits: Johnny Herbet, Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard

Pit Reporters: Ted Kravitz and James Allen. (He's very knowledgeable on the sport and was a great pit reporter.)

I would also have studio presentation from London. It would make getting good pundits a lot easier as they don't have to commit to much and give Kravitz and Allen a bigger pre race role in terms of finding interviews etc. If you think about it they do most of that sort of stuff anyway so no need for the presenter and pundits to be there.

They would have to buy out Kimi's contract though and they won't do that. With the massive car overhauls next year anyways he might stay due to the overtaking that will be happening. Anyway

FORCE INDIA!!!!!!
