Academy player ratings v Palace

Kevin O'Brien 8.75 (Made a series of spectacular diving saves and cut out some vital balls at the near post to deny an always dangerous and sometimes brilliant Palace attack).

Luke O'Neill 6.5 (Never had it easy against difficult opposition but held up well)

Scott Garner 6 (Best I've seen him play for City considering what he was up against. Struggled for pace at times but did quite well in the air and was a commanding figure in the closing 10 minutes even though his passing continued to let him down).

Lathanial Rowe-Turner 7 (A rock at the back for much of the time although he was always going to have his problems)

Joe Cobb 6.75 (Supported Mattock in midfield with energy and enthusiasm while still coping quite well with his defensive responsibilities).

Craig King 6.5 (Showed clever touches on the right at times, particularly when putting Mattock through for what looked a likely goal. Passed the ball earlier than I've seen before and looked much improved. Just needs more end product although he was fouled for the decisive penalty.).

Lee Cox 7.5 (The sort of player any team would want. Appears to have the ability to mark anyone. Started midfield, finished at right back but contested every situation with gusto. A player with a future I'd say.)

Fraser Tuttle 6.5 (Cogged in well as a centre-midfielder with Cox)

Joe Mattock 8.25 (As good as I've seen Joe play, particularly first half. Strong, fast, committed and tried so hard to make things happen. Got himself into more shooting positions in one match than I've seen him in all season. It was just a pity he failed to finish despite hitting some forceful shots)

Ashley Chambers 9 (Winning penalty and absolutely outstanding. First half he was the pivot for any number of pass and move combinations, particularly with Kee and Mattock. He also hit a post and curled a shot wide which would have been a candidate for goal of the Academy season. Held the ball up well against tough defenders and ran himself to cramp. MoM for me)

Billy Kee 7.25 (Well taken penalty and lots of involvement in a series of clever City moves in the first half. Hit a post with a chance he should have taken).

Subs: Robbie Burns 6 (Slotted in effortlessly and energertically)

Stephen Howard 6 (Supplemented midfield capably)

Elliott Chamberlain 6 (Promising newcomer who looked competent and confident).

Kevin O'Brien -7- Made some good saves but made a howler for Palace first goal, tried to save the ball going for a corner but lost the ball allowing the winger to cross for a tap in.

Luke O'Neill -8- Theres something i like about this lad, I thought he defended very well. When he did make mistakes he had the desire to win it back. I was told he was the youngest player for us, is that right Thrac? It didnt show.

Scott Garner -6- I've seen him a few times now but hes never impressed me. Reminds me of Steven Taylor at Newcastle with the way he runs and defends. Attacks the ball well but always seems to mis-time his headers.

Lathanial Rowe-Turner -8- Best i've seen him play. There were a few mis-kicks here and there but was dominant in the air and on the ground.

Joe Cobb -7- Incosistent i thought, some very good things followed by some poor passes.

Craig King -7- Was tidy on the ball, worked his socks off and was always a threat.

Fraser Tuttle -7- Worked extremely hard in the midfield, kept Bostock quiet and put in some meaty challenges.

Lee Cox -7- Another one who worked very hard, closing down and getting forward. Was better in midfield then he was at right back.

Joe Mattock -8- Was a class above in the first half, was playing with freedom and showed plenty of ability with the ball at his feet. Looked quicker as well. didnt see much of the ball after that but when he did get it he was dangerous. Could and probably should of got a hat-trick.

Ashley Chambers -8- Excellent, captain led by example. Good touch and vision.

Billy Kee -7- Fairly quiet, picked up the ball in some good positions. Strange time to sub him just after he scored, his confidence would have been high.

Sorry if ive got some of the names wrong.

Bit of an ameteur at all this youth team, JBF9 will be your best bet for ratings but I'll do the players i remember:

O'Brien - 8 - Great saves but looked nervy with a few crosses, kicking was a mixed bag too.

Garner - 7

Rowe-Turner - 8 - Rock at the back

Cox - 7

Tuttle - 6

Mattock - 9 - easily the best player on the pitch, really should have scored at least once though.

Kee - 8 - Not sure why he was brought off. Always a threat and was never found wanting in arial challenges.

Chambers - 9 - got better as the game went on, almost unplayable at this level

Ref: 2 - how was their 2nd a pen????!!!!????

How does someone like Mattock, with experience in the 1st team and undoubted ability, cope with being put back into this level of play? </rhetorical>

My hat goes off to him for doing it and putting in a better-than-decent effort.

He looked as if he loved it.

As you would if you were playing a league above those others on the pitch...but the question runs to the reaction of the kid to being told to go back to this level. I imagine there might have been a different response had Stearman been asked to do something similar.

It plays credit to the boy.

Mattock back where he should be, and I don't mean that negatively. He should be being wrapped up in cotton wool and nurtured, not thrown to the lions in our first team.

Left back coming in this week maybe?

Absolutely. Mattock probably feels a little lost at times in the shower of shit of our first team. 17 years of age, playing with some seriously shocking players, it doesn't help your development. Being taken out of the limelight and allowed to enjoy his football again, might give him to re-vitalised boost. I'm glad he acted positively and didn't think he was above playing at that level again. As you say, there's one or two youngsters we have that wouldn't be as enthusiastic as dropping back down to help out.

I am still very optimistic that Mattock will develop in to a quality player given time.

Any opinions on the palace players?

Its difficult to know who is who because the players were wearing different numbers to what to the team-sheet said they were wearing. John Bostock was ok at times but our midfield kept him quiet, Moses was good when he was running at people but didnt seem interested a lot of the time, Scannell was quick but didnt really get any opportunities. Your defence was pretty poor. A left winger who came on in extra time looked good but that could have been because he was running against a tired defence.

To be fair when Stearman has played for the reserves this season he has always looked keen.

All the youngsters seem to enjoy playing for Steve Beaglehole and I'm not surprised.

He mostly takes a very positive line. Gets his side pushing high up the pitch and attacking in force.

Yes they work hard but there's a happiness about his teams too although I felt that disappeared for a while when the imports arrived.

Whether it will come back in the New Year I don't know but it was certainly apparent, as usual, in the Academy team last night.

Ashley Chambers was no different to Mattock. Ashley's not a physical footballer but he got some strength from somewhere and led the line brilliantly.

Neither lad gave the slightest impression that youth football was beneath them and they didn't want to be there.

In fact, if the first team seniors set the same example these did, we'd have a far more effective first team.

Look out for Victor Moses - for me he was joint Man of the Match together with Chambers. The winger also looked useful - the loudpeaker fella was saying he was Sean Scannel?? but I'm not sure

I think it was Moses who audaciously scooped the ball onto his foot and over Lee Cox's head. Many a player would have been left for dead but Cox recovered and still got a block in. Moses' skills though caught the eye constantly. Quick too, and clever.

A couple of their fans insisted "Sean Scannell" was in fact Ashley Robinson - I believe several names were mixed up - but he struck me as Palace's Billy Kee - very strong on the ball, hard to stop when he was moving and very dangerous in front of goal.

Couple with their number eight, John Bostock, Palace presented a significant challenge in attack and it is great credit to City's team spirit and industry that they never allowed such excellent players to rest easy.

Fortunately Palace never had the defenders to subdue Leicester's attack. Big and strong they might have been but City's slick, often one touch passing and moving had them in all sorts of trouble.

Our defence looked very weak in our last game and i think we had a 15 year old in centre defence, injuries have been so bad. Good luck in the next round.
