How unlucky have you been?

Another poster said the was "no such thing as luck" but I've had experiences on a golf course that would put that view to the test.

One was at the short 17th at Anstey. My opponent's tee shot plugged into the greenside bunker and was barely visible.

I'd landed 15 feet from the pin and eventually went down in two putts for a standard par three and felt I was certain of a half.

I was momentarily more certain when my opponent took a might swipe at his plugged ball.

It exploded from the bunker, flew high over the green and towards the nearby railway bridge where it hit the window of the groundsman's tractor, rebounded onto the grass bank of the course, took one bounce onto the green and rolled 18 feet straight into the hole for a birdie two.

It wasn't quite the worst thing that happened mind. I once bagged an eagle two at a par four and lost by two strokes!

We were playing on winter greens at the same course and my drive to the green of the shortened 11th landed close to the pin for an easy eagle two.

My opponent sliced his tee shot into a copse of trees. He hacked ferociously at his second, topped it and watched in horror as it whizzed towards the green seemingly heading for the woods and brook some 50 yards past.

What I'd not taken account of was the low trajectory and the ball went straight into the top of the flag marking the hole.

Indeed it wrapped itself within the flag which wound round and round the flagpole, then unwound, finally dropping the ball back onto the green where it just turned over and dropped into the hole.

With my opponent playing off 22 he had two strokes handicap advantage so his eagle became a net zero!

Anyone else got lucky/unlucky or amusing sports stories?

I normally hit about 20 shots bang on the back wall marker (not sure on the technical name for this, ht ebit of wood you need to hit the ball above) every time I play squash. I like to think of these as "unlucky" and not me being crap.

I was sliced a ball on to an adjoining fairway and as i approached the ball a crow came up and picked up the ball and flew it back up the middle of the fairway i was playing on flying towards the hole, I set off chaseing it with my 3 mates pissing them selves. Eventually the crow dropped the ball 50m from the hole and i ended up getting par. It probabbly would have been a better story if i got a Birdie :)

last season Hit the post twice from two penalties in a game when i needed 1 more for a hat trick.

As an observation, if it hit the flag, that would surely push it away from the ball and even if the ball followed through it would be on the outside of the flag movement.

So, for a small nylon based flag to catch a fast moving ball and stop it from following through 50 yards and then drop it directly into a golf hole from 5-6ft truly is bad/good luck indeed.

In regards to golf, too many to mention.

But in matchplay Thracian, as im sure Monty willhave told you, never think about winning the hole until the both balls are in the hole!

It was certainly a seriously windy midwinter's day and the flag was fluttering vigourously. Seems to me the ball must have hit the flag very close to the support because we actually wondered where it had gone for a while.

The process of winding up and unfurling took some seconds and none of us had seen anything like it and I still don't pretend to full understand it.

It didn't drop directly into the hole though. It dropped next to the hole but so close it just slowly rolled over and in, something that can easily happen on soft temporary greens in wet weather where people have made foot imprints retrieving their ball.

As an aside the incident raised the question of what would have happened had the ball remained wrapped in the flag and not dropped to the floor. Apparently it is covered in the rules and the ball can be removed from the flag, placed on the lip of the hole and tapped in ... one stroke.

That reminds me of the longest stroke I ever saw from a woman golfer, and a novice at that. We were playing at Keele near Stoke and it was her first time out.

We were on the tee of a 500-yards and some par five. The groundsman was out and had parked his tractor and mower at the side of the fairway to let us tee off.

The girl went last and hit her ball into the mower blades but by the time it landed the groundsman was off up the fairway.

When he turned at the far end he deposited the woman's ball beside the green which she duly chipped up near the flag and putted for an eagle.

It was quite amazing to see her card. All sorts of embarrassing scores like 12/14/15 and this eagle three! I seriously doubt she ever got another.

In fact her husband, who'd insisted on playing 18 holes when I'd suggested nine, later collapsed during the round and, despite investing in a posh new set of clubs each, I don't think they ever played again.

I think i was stuffed from chaseing the crow 200m, my mates love to rehash the story seeing me chaseing and yelling at this crow with my buggy in tow :D

I have driven a Par 4 hole of some 340 yards (it is slightly downhill and the fairways were firm) only to three putt.:S

What do you use? Thirteen clubs and a canon?

I was playing for Birstall United under 10's as the big man at the back. The ball came rolling to me just inside my own half and following my Dad's (the manager) instructions (if in doubt wallop it as hard as you can) swung my gangly leg and connected perfectly.

The ball sailed high into the air, bounced once right in front of the keeper and straight over his head into the goal.

It was Beckham/Joey esque. A beautiful moment. And someone had the cheek to call it a fluke.

playing for my old sunday side , went through 1 on 1 with the keeper , went round the keeper and shot from acute angle and got the direction and power to a tee , just about to celebrate when the ball dropped on to the line and stopped dead in a puddle lol , the keeper by this stage had got up and retrieved the ball on the line !

Didnt matter a great deal as we were 6-0 up at the time but it would have been my hat-trick !!

I've done that kind of thing many a time. Suffice to say, putting isnt my strongpoint either!

The problem with putting is they never make the holes big enough.

And at my course the holes seem to move a bit once the putt is going towards them. :(
