Why are we having to "give" players away?

Listening to Ollie on the Radio tonight was quite interesting, especially when he admitted that the players we signed in the summer have cost us plenty to release during the current transfer windw and has basically meant less money for him to spend on new players.

I accept that Milan has not got some bottomless pit to throw at the club, especially when we have no chance of promotion this season but why is it that so many of our players are leaving with pay offs and none are simply being sold for nominal fee`s?

Were they that bad that no one would spend a few quid on them? We got a fee for COG and even Stephen Hughes so surely someone would have paid £100k for Kaebi? In the summer so many clubs were apparently after him and I lost count at the amount of Premiership and Championship clubs who we beat to the signature for the likes of Cort (lol) but it seems at the moment that the only way we can punt out players is by giving them money to fook off.

I suppose the reason is they are on big wages here and we don't want to go down the road of whats happened with Rab Douglas? Some fart who is just delighted to get his pay packet before he retires in some barn in Scotland.

I still believe we could have been more pro-active and shunted some of these players out for small fees?

I wouldn't have paid a Linguaphone Language Course for Kaebi. :D

Let's not forget, these were the same players who were publicly cast aside by the current manager for being useless, expensive wastes of time, space and effort.

Worse, they were deemed to be negatively impacting the squad.

Who in their right mind would pay a transfer fee for such a player?

For sale: one overpaid, Leicester City reject. Part of the relegation threatened squad of 06/07 and/or 07/08. Wages exessive, attitude negative. A snip at 100k or best offer.

I didn't quite get it when Ollie sent about seven players away (apparently) to find new clubs early in his tenure at the club. I also agree that he almost made them out to be worse than they were just to almost humiliate them to accept a mutual termination or to make there stay at the club feel so uncomfortable that they had to leave but surely these lot going mid-season didnt have to all cost us money?

We could have got £3m for Kaebi surely lol

Catch 22 really isn't it.

They aren't good enough for us. But are good enough to collect our wages...therefore no League 1 club or whatever can afford their wages.

Good old Martin Allen eh.

Hellings couldn't find a club in Holland at zero transfer cost and subsidised wages- says it all really

The same guy who cost about 1m Euro`s from Ajax to Anderlecht?! I know he has proven to be another waste but the point of the thread is that I hope we dont start cancelling everyones contract when we should hold firm and demand a small fee or just letting the player leave to join another club without any pay-offs.

At the moment we are getting a reputation of giving players away and playing for the privilege and Im sure all these lads will end up somewhere else with further signing-on bonuses.

We've not given Mattock or Stearman away, only people who are taking space up and never going to get near the first team.

Hellings is another example of the strange and incomprehensible signings we've made this year. We don't want to "hang on" for small fees because they're costing biggish wages and are eating Mandaric's money for no useful purpose.

but we still have to give them the same money, except we have to do it all at once rather then in monthly amounts which has already been factored into our budgets

You will save a % of cash, they wouldn't give them a 100% pay off.

Im not too sure whether you heard the interview yesterday but it came across that the lads we have let go cost us so much (to release) that Ollie had little money to actually buy players during this window and has been forced mainly to concentrate on loan signings.

Its obviously about the high wages we were offering to get these lads into the club in the first place so maybe we must be a bit more savvy in the deals we tie up to sign these players?

Thing your forgetting here Geo is the player. Carl Cort for example would never of signed for Marbella had we not released him, as he would be on alot more money here.

how do you know? someone like Newton who only had a 1 year deal in the 1st place, Cort wouldn't of gone for anything less then around 99.9999999999% of his contract

The biggest thing with all signings is that you get value for money which, in the case of highish wage deals, means making sure your signings are of sufficiently high quality and that the person you're signing will be a first team asset to the club.

That would seem no great problem providing you investigate players thoroughly before signing them, both personally and with the manager plus, perhaps, a genuinely trusted and proven talent spotter and evaluator.

Not easy these days because word of interest spreads fast and agents are manipulative creatures not averse to pushing prices up by involving others. But it's not impossible if your scouting system is as it should be.

 Or give it to them all at once

Yeah I get the concept of how it works and understand that we would have to tighten the belt and make a loss on some of these lads but the feeling I am getting is that the club has panicked and just released all these players at a cost who are decent enough to find clubs and find them quite quickly.

Its almost that other clubs can approach the players who we said we didnt want and say they will sign them as soon as they have agreed a package that sees them released by mutual consent so they can sign them for fook all.

We dont want a reputation of clubs seeing us and Milan as a soft touch as MM is able to bankroll us canceling contracts and paying for it if a player is deemed to have been a failure.

I just get the feeling now that we are almost an all or nothing club on transfers. Players like Kisnorbo, McAuley, Mattock and Stearman would attract fees of around a million or more and after that, we have to give players away for nothing or send them on loan, paying there wages with the hope that they are successful enough to cancel their contracts and allow other clubs to get them for nothing with less risk as they have had time to size them up.

I don't think that will happen, nor do I think you will see us signing 16 players of whom only about 3 or good enough to play in our first team again.

I used to have a Vauxhall Victor 2 litre estate - it had a bench seat as a front seat, it was brilliant. I loved that car to death and felt it was well worth the £100.00 I paid for it.

It had a couple of faults: no tax, no insurance, no MOT and the engine didn't work. Aside from that it was brilliant.

Apart from the bodywork.

My Dad reckoned it had no place in his drive and told me to get rid of it. No problem, I thought, someone will give me a ton for it at least. After all, it was brilliant.

Much to my surprise, not one person phoned up to enquire about it - and so I phoned a company that claimed to give you £20.00 cash to take cars away.

When they turned up they told me it was not brilliant, they said it was a pile of shit and my Dad had to pay them £50 to remove it.

That was for a car that I reckoned was brilliant.

Imagine how much we have to pay teams to take these players that I rate as beyond shit.
