davieG Posted 11 February 2008 Posted 11 February 2008 From the Mirror Leicester 0-1 Plymouth: Ian Holloway vows to axe flops Ian Holloway is ready to dump his Foxes flops as he prepares for a grim battle to beat the drop. The Leicester boss has warned that the time for excuses is over after an alarming slide down the Championship table. Plymouth tasted sweet revenge over their former boss with a deserved victory after a goal from Peter Halmosi - a player signed by Holloway - to leave Milan Mandaric's dreams of a return to the Premier League in tatters for another season. Mandaric has already sacked three managers in under a year and Holloway has now secured only four wins from 16 matches to leave City three points above the drop zone. But Holloway is now prepared to drop his nice guy persona and get nasty as he battles to keep his job - and Leicester in the league. He said: "The time for excuses is over and we're in a battle. We've got to dig ourselves right out of it. The lower you are the harder those games get. "If they can't cope with it I'm going to have to do major surgery. All the talk about the changes of managers and players and everything is excuses. "We've been making too many excuses for too long. They've got to stand up and be counted - and I'm confident they will. "I will not accept anyone who isn't positive, I can't have it. I don't care what anyone else says, the problem at our club is that nobody is positive because nobody is happy about where we are. "We've got 15 games left to start a positive new football club. If they can't do it I'll change them. "If we carry on losing it's relegation isn't it? We just waste too many minutes in games half-worried." Argyle chairman Paul Stapleton's comments claiming Holloway was responsible for five players leaving in January ensured a hostile atmosphere. But more than 1,500 travelling Plymouth fans were crowing over their former boss after Hungarian ace Halmosi pounced from close range 11 minutes before the break. The hosts mounted a late bombardment but keeper Luke McCormick produced excellent saves to deny Matty Fryatt and Gareth McAuley. McCormick is now dreaming of the play-offs, but the Argyle star still reckons his old boss can pull off an escape. The keeper said: "A lot was made about the fact it was against the old manager but the players don't really think about it. "We thoroughly deserved it. We've never won at Leicester so it's nice to break a hoodoo. "Let the fans do all the talking, we did our talking on the pitch. But he will get Leicester out of trouble. "He did a great job at Plymouth and I've no doubt he will do enough here."

They've got to stand up and be counted - and I'm confident they will. Is he going to count himself in this as well then? Sure blaming the defeat wholly on the players is also an excuse? His insistence on playing Hayles, his insistence of using Hume on the wing, his bizarre substitutions and his encouragement of hoof-ball tactics throughout the game were just as much to blame as any individual players.
davieG Posted 11 February 2008 Posted 11 February 2008 To carry out a heart transplant he'll need replacement one to put in - have we got a spare heart sitting on the bench?
Dr The Singh Posted 11 February 2008 Posted 11 February 2008 To carry out a heart transplant he'll need replacement one to put in - have we got a spare heart sitting on the bench? If there was an award for talking up a scenario then Holloway would win hands down!!! I really do worry for us and I hope Holloway analyses the current scenario and realises that it is a battle but we still do need to play football, there's no use in lobbing long balls on the box to howard and hayles and expecting hume on the wing to latch onto them!! It doesn't work Holloway, it's too predictable!!!

Or threatening them with expulsion from the team when he's got little in the way of replacements and they still get to take home their £10 grand a week. I bet they're all hiding behind the sofa at home.

Tube Bar Rich Posted 11 February 2008 Posted 11 February 2008 We just need to get through this season without being relegated and forget about it. Everything points to next season and we have some quality players who need a full pre season together and a fresh start. I feel sorry for everybody involved this season, it's been a nightmare. Ollie just needs to get us to the summer and we can put a line under everything that's happened in the last year and start afresh. May 5th is first day of the new Century..... BRING IT ON.
Mark Posted 11 February 2008 Posted 11 February 2008 I'm really concerned now, in Ollies latest interview his own words are "I don't envisage too many changes (ok but..), I don't think there was too much wrong with that (on the Plymouth performance, but there was )".
lookwhaticando Posted 11 February 2008 Author Posted 11 February 2008 I just watched the last 40 minutes of the match. We seemed pretty aimless for a while... way too many useless punts up the field, from all areas of the pitch. Loved the bit where McAuley hauled Easter to the ground. Proper rough 'n ready defending. That Fryatt flick was worthy of a goal - shame that keeper of theirs was equal to it.
Bryn Posted 11 February 2008 Posted 11 February 2008 Ollie was as much to blame. I hope he knows that.

It's been like that for a while now, we squander possession all over the pitch. The back line are the worst offenders, they seem so anxious when in possession that there first instinct is to get the ball away from them as quickly as possible, as far away as possible, even if there are other outlets available in midfield. This leads the midfield to be starved of possession and never being given the chance to get into the game properly. The back line need to be given some confidence, told to pass the ball around a bit between them, have some patience, bring the opponents toward them which opens ups areas in front of them for our midfield to move into to receive the ball.
MC Prussian Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 This is what Ollie had to say about his players' attitude towards winning: Against Plymouth it was a late kick-off on the telly, our lads saw the other results - with everybody else down there winning. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/7245401.stm Frankly, quite shocking. If these players can't give a toss about playing for LCFC, they'd be put in a mental hospital, fined or kicked out of the first squad forever.
