Gazza held after hotel incident

Gascoigne was capped 57 times for England

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been detained under the Mental Health Act following an incident at a hotel in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police said a 40-year-old man was detained following a report of disorderly behaviour at the Malmaison Hotel early on Wednesday.

Officers later visited Mr Gascoigne at Gateshead's Hilton Hotel after concerns were raised about his behaviour.

Police said he was not in custody and was now receiving medical treatment.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel."

"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act, and no-one was injured during the incident."

Gascoigne, a former player with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Glasgow Rangers and Middlesbrough, was sacked after 39 days as manager of Kettering Town in 2005.

He was capped 57 times for England

Poor old Gazza.

Poor old Gazza.

As you say but no surprise though.

There's a fine line between genius & insanity. A genius in his prime, it now appears Gazza may've now crossed over to the other side

Reminds me abit of George Best does Gazza.

Only 40 aswell, wasted his career.

Not sure he wasted his career, certainly should have done more.

Playing career lasted for almost 20 years.

Played almost 400 games 83 goals.

Capped 57 times for england scored 10 goals

Played for newcastle, tottenham, lazio and rangers.

Pretty sure lots of players would like that career.

His talent could have made him the greatest player the world has ever seen but he let it go to his head. Like what alot of people say the 91 FA Cup final wrecked him and he was never the same player after.

He played in 1 world cup and made a huge impact though, was a shame he never went to France 98

A talent that could have been even better!!

I am from Kettering and when he came here for a brief stint, it was quite amazing, the circus that follows him is crazy!

I dont think he will ever be normal to be honest!

As soon as they appointed him you knew it would end in tears.

Yeah everyone got excited, im glad to say i wasnt one of them, because i have never followed Kettering. I remeber the F.A Cup game against Stevenage, i think there was something stupid like 4,000 fans at Rockingham Rd that day...

Where are they now?

Kettering average about 1000 a game i think.

It had to be possibly be the worst appointment in the history of football.

They've had a few gates over 2000 this season and are regulary get more than diamonds now. Once they move they'll no doubt see an increase in gates. Who knows they could achieve league status in the not to distant future

It's not surprising at all unfortunately.

For somebody who's had a great career footballing-wise he's sure had other crap that follows him around to balance it up.

Really?

Well fair play to the Kettering fans, i know a few who have been going for years so i take my hat off to them!

I think they will acheive league status soon, although im not to happy as they are trying to get the ground that i play my football at the moment...

They are trying to secure the land at Powell Lane in Burton Latimer, home to the mighty Burton Park Wanderers of the UCL.

Although i am sick note at the min, as i have been injured for 4 months!!

lol

I've read his book, good read tbh. Really lets you get an insight on his life, and what has happened to him off the pitch.

And no it isn't all his own fault whoever said that.

His own fault to be honest.

Not really any sympathy from me...

Yes its his fault that he's mentally ill. Sadly with someone of the disposition of Gazza the next 'episode' is always just around the corner, all he can really do is try and hold them back.

I too have read his book and from an early age he was exposed to mental illness with his father and given what fame and fortune brought with it the harsh reality kicks in after a lengthy drink problem. A superb player and a top man when not on the bottle, another George Best however.
