Happy St Georges Day!

I was born and bred on this great soil, of what they call England, and if some Iranian\Turk is a Saint to us English, then so be it. I for one am all about celebrating our nationality, we should be proud to be english, for all the right reasons!!!

Excuse me? MY bullshit nationalism? My bullshit nationalism is the only reason you give a flying fook about St. George.

He was just some knight credited with a fair degree of chivalry whose name the Normans dragged over with them. A Turk, a Roman soldier, revered halfway around the world. What reason have the English really to get that worked about him? They haven't, and the celebrating of his "day" was a tradition that faded and faded for decades. The only reason you get particularly up in arms about it now was as a reactionary measure to the surge of Scots and Welsh separatist-nationalism over the last (half) century.

I mean go ahead and have your day, I'm glad you're proud of being English. As long as you're not taking your national pride to some crude, jingoist level I think it's good to celebrate your roots and that's really, I guess, what Saints days are all about - far more than the Saint and the Faith in question. But if you can't take a bit of light ribbing about the bizarre and frankly alien nature of your "Patron Saint" without throwing some nationality-themed hissy fit then it's probably you and not I that needs the chill-pill.

When all else fails rely on supposition

I don't give a f**k where he's from.

It's about celebrating a national day, for whatever reason. Saying it will encourage xenophobia and secularism is a bit of an over reaction. I'd go as far to say it could actually have the opposite effect. God knows this country could do with a bit of unity.

And he killed a dragon. Better than whatever your poncy Welsh and Scottish saints ever did.

Someone was waving a Welsh flag last Saturday...guess how well received it was by the lobotomised?

Probally booed or laughed at  Why turn up to a Leicester game with a Welsh flag ? Like me taking a England flag sitting in the Cardiff end wouldn't go down well would it BOB.

From what Fez said, it was nothing so jovial.

And for the same reason they take a Jamaican flag with Sappleton written on it, probably.

But what would happen if my favourite player came from England and i supported Cardiff and i took a England flag in the cardiff end ?

Got nothing to do with it!

Next you will tell us you used to Boo Iwan Roberts?

Truthfully you'd probably get a verbal battering from a bunch of chav twats, but I wouldn't condone that, either.

Though I would say Welsh distaste for the English is far more understandable than the visa versa. Likewise anyone else on the planet (and let's be honest, there's quite a ****' few) you've shit on from a considerable height.

I should add that I don't particularly condone either attitude, I don't like that a country with the cultural and arguably political individuality of Wales is (was?) governed nearly entirely by it's absentee neighbour but that's an issue with the 'British' government. I've really no actual hate or even dislike for the English. Most of my friends are English, I've lived here for just over a decade. And even if I was living in the days of Longshanks himself it wouldn't be the average-Joe, English peasant (you lot) responsible for the plight of your neighbouring countries, really. People take a hell of a lot of stick on behalf of their governments, Americans are the modern-day example - all characterized as war-mongering, ignorant yobs because of the example their president sets. Somewhat unfair, really, but there you are. All I'm saying is I can sympathise with the frosty attitude of those your country has colonized, beaten and oppressed somewhat more than I can with you for simply "being disliked" :P

:giggle: No i have met Iwan and even play football with his son and i haven't got a problem with the Welsh at all or any other home nation. Just Finns came on here with a chip on his shoulder and started slagging off our national day. Scots, Welsh and The Irish are all the same with there strange hate of the English.

Fcuk being English. What exactly does being 'English' stand for?

Patriotism stands for simple minded cretin nowadays.

Sorry FInnegan, it may sound a stupid question but is there a PARTICULAR reason, or event that has lead to this hatred, because historically the world should hate England\Britian?????

I told ya, Chip on the shoulder they all have.

England is everything they wish to be and they are jealous of us. Like most of the world in fact.

As far as history goes England have a great one, & I am proud to be English, why do some have Issues with that?

Perfect example of what nationalism stands for right here. Total Nobbery.

I couldn't give a fcuk what country you're from, i don't see the point in hating someone for the simple reason as to which country they were born in. It's absolute b*llox.

It's like when you hear total c*nts go on about winning two world wars, winning the world cup, and saving the French. We've done nothing but sit around getting fat, we've done fcuk all! Nationalism mattered back then, not anymore.

I'm with you, i'm proud to be english and also will be and i don't understand the hate for us. The Americans are the only lot who like us these days.

I'd like to point to the sizable amendment I just made to that post. I realized after reading it it was substantially simplistic.

WTF?

What? You think I'm wrong.

England did to Wales - Warred, annexed, outlawed culture and language, treated for decades as second-class citizens, mocked, abused and generally used.

Wales did to England. - Blew up a few water-lines. Got angry and lit a few empty holiday homes, generally had a bit of a whinge about. Oh. And spoke in 'a funny language with too many constanants' when you walked in with the Wrong accent?'

You don't think the Welsh (or Scottish or Irish) have slightly more reason to be irritated with England than the visa versa?

Edit: Again, btw, I'd like to point out that I'm largely playing Devil's advocate. I do have mixed opinions about 'British' rule of Scotland, Wales and NI but I don't have a searing hate for "The English." I'm simply pointing out that, imo, it's somewhat more understandable than the reverse anti-Welsh / Scottish / whatever "nobbery" (as MF probably fairly rightly put it) of English thugs.

lol

Why are bothered about what some man from England did to someone in Wales years & years ago?

And your still angry about that ? Get over it been years now forgive and forget. I think most countries have now.

England make Britian the superpower that it is.
