BigGibbo Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 The problem with journalists (I have a few friends who are journalists) is that they are forever carrying notepads around. Also, my friends all work for local rags so basically, you can't have an opinion on anything. They've become informed but ultimately boring and completely lacking in opinion. I tell them this regularly. Your not just going to transform overnight if you take the job, You'll still be you but with a better paid job that only you are interested in! Something teachers & nurses often forget Go for it!
The People's Hero Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 I'll say now, I work for a small company, make a decentish wage and take a dividend but the student loan really is a crippling debt. I can't get on top of the fu cker. (Sorry, had 7 bottles of wine between 3 people at lunch. Feeling massively worse for wear.)
Tommy G Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Not tits up, it just sucks balls after 8 years. Dont try and glorify your mundane job. I'm not? Well perhaps a little less posting on here would have done your career the world of good. I wouldn't use your past experience as a put off from my perspective, you clearly were one of the unlucky ones.

I'd say MF already has the working experience you don't have, given your age I assume you only started working there a short while ago? Also, who says that the same couldn't happen to you?

Daggers Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Uni is overated, what kind of job were you hoping for at the end of the degree? Did the job that you had in mind even need a degree?Unfortunately a University degree these days has lost of a lot of it's prestige and anyone can get into a uni now, even with awful A level results. Totally agree. Too many people are going to University now to do pointless degrees, too many are going because they think they should and then dropping out - and too many universities can not cope with the numbers attending and are offering a shite service as a result.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Everyone loves there job at the start, the longer you stay the more boring and mundane. I train new staff you watch them for the first month in 6-12 months time if there still there that brightness and enthusiasm is gone.
Dr The Singh Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 My degree was a waste of time to be honest, i went and did a totally different professional course which gave me a much better carreer!! Uni is only good for being lazy, drinking, and womanising, from my experience anyway!!!
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 How many years full time is a normal say business degree

I've done my professional one, now I want a piece of that. Not to say my life isn't a bit like anyway...
Tommy G Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 What? Shut up! You patronising little ****wit. You don't **** all about me or what i do/have done. No disrespect, but I really couldn't care less. Just because you didn't do very well, doesn't mean this particular career 'sucks ass' as you put it.
Daggers Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 I've done my professional one, now I want a piece of that. Not to say my life isn't a bit like anyway... Rent the house MF, you'll live to regret selling if you do. As a mature student you can receive bursaries from the University, plus a grant from your LEA, plus student loans and the ability to apply for discretionary awards. You ought to check it out too, if you haven't Katy, as you'll be able to claim almost all of your child care costs back from the LEA as well. We lived quite a bearable existence while I was studying...that said, being paid proper regular money again is a boon and I'm glad I never had to pay the daft tuition fees that are now being charged.
Tommy G Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 I'd say MF already has the working experience you don't have, given your age I assume you only started working there a short while ago? Also, who says that the same couldn't happen to you? I'm not saying it won't. I have an optomistic outlook on life though. You could apply that to any profession, but if you go in with the attitude that you won't succeed then it's likely you won't. You also have to have the right personal skills to go with natural academic talent. A lot of students who achieve straight A's in A levels/GCSE's often have restricted people skills due to their sheltered academic life. Thus when they get into the real world and get a job and apply their knowledge in say a business environment.. they are utter useless. The successful people in this world are the ones in between.
Dr The Singh Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 I've done my professional one, now I want a piece of that. Not to say my life isn't a bit like anyway... Really MF, I should spend more time with you!!!! At uni though it's alot cheaper and far more easier, most places are like £1 a drink, there's a larger and easier 'pool' of woman and anything goes as they say!!!! PS: I was at uni nearly 8 years ago, I take it things are still the same!!!
Joe. Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Life really is too short to not do what you want to do. I'm not quite at the university stage yet, still got another year of A levels after this one but I'm looking forward to going. I've been interested in doing a journalism degree for some time now, and I'm sure that's what I'll be doing when it comes to it. It's a sought after subject but I thought what the hell, I'm never going to get into it if I don't even try. So that's what I'm going to do. Good luck Lee with it all by the way, hope it pays off.

You come across so patronising you really do. No disrespect to other accountants - but you're well suited to the occupation. In fact, it seems more of a vocation for you. 'I met him in a crowded room....'

OK I'll leave him be. However I think you will find that the majority of his arguemnts have come from him being abusive towards me. I'm not taking all the blame, its natural to react. You do exactly the same!!
