So, you think you're a big club?

Been reading through a load of threads on here and time and time again you refer to yourselves as a big club even when compared to championship clubs.

Now I'm not disputing it. We at various Forest forums just as often go on about us being one of the bigger clubs in the championship (not something I neccesarily (sp?) agree with btw.

I was just wondering by what measure do you think makes a "big club"? Attendance? history? wage bill? funds? you know the sort of thing.

I'd have to go for a mixture of attendances, current financial state, wage bill/turnover and current position and perhaps a little history but as time passes history becomes increasingly irrelevant.

I argued this point with a JJB staff member.

They've stopped selling Leicester shirts, so I said 'But they're the biggest team outside the premiership.'

He laughed and said 'I support Leeds mate, they're gonna give Leicester a new arsehole.'

And I was like 'not the point.'

Of course I was joking, because we're not the biggest team outside prem etc.

I just find it hard to believe that the only place I could find Leicester shirts on sale (apart from the megastore) was fooking dominoes.

Because if you run a business, you want to make money don't you?

I'd genearlly agree there. Attendences are generally the biggest factor for me, History as well although as you say, technically irrelevant.

We did well to get 3rd Highest average attendence in the Championship...But that was only 'cus of all the free tickets handed out lol

It's pretty much attendance/fan base, the stadium/facilities and reputation.

The first two are pretty straight-forward, but the latter is a lot more difficult to grasp and is the one that's causing the debate. I'd say it's made up of the staff's reputation, the clubs recent history, and supposed traditions at a club that matter. Money and business obviously can have an indirect influence on those, but you're getting to a point where measuring these things become a solely subjective thing...

I've posted the same question on a Forest forum linky (be nice if you go over, it's a similar place to here where opposition fans are free to post as long as the're not just trolling), and they come up with the point the media makes a big club. I.e, filling column inches and generating advertising revenue if the're featured enough.

Personally I think it's a combination of all these things. Wigan for example I wouldn't class as a big club because despite their prem. status the average gate was 19000 or so last year. Which is crap considering we averaged nearly 20k in league one and you lot got 23k. source

Obviously we are not a massive club, but I wouldn't call us a small club either. We have a large fanbase, and a decent history.

In terms of club size, I think we'd fit into the lower Premiership/upper Championship category.

Would be nice if we could do the same on the pitch as well.

If the media makes a big club then between Mandaric, Allen and Ollie then we probably were the biggest club outside the Premiership this year. The tabloids absolutely loved the three of them, haha.

We beat you for a start

I dont really care.

We are a league one club....enough said.

The sooner everyone realise that once 22 players start kicking a ball at 3pm on a Saturday, it doesn't matter if you are or were a big club, the better.

Exactly. At the end of the day I don't believe any club playing in the third division can call themselves 'big'

I didn't think JJB sold Leicester shirts since they stopped making them. :dunno:
