smokey Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 Last season was THE time - before we got relegated!. But, forgetting that, while a number of people are now talking about giving our youngsters their chance, the situation is no longer as rosy as it was. Stearman has gone and Mattock is said to be going soon. Levi Porter and Billy Kee are recovering from long-term injury. Gradel's situation seems uncertain despite his long contract and there is no sign that Sheehan or Dodds will even be playing for us. So, in short, our brief chance of building a team around our most successful youth players has gone and someone has already rightly remarked on how hard it would be to do so from Division One with so many circling sharks, given that such a side would probably need two years to have a chance of securing promotion. Andy King, Conrad Logan and Ryan Beswick have a chance of breaking through (providing Pearson rates them which is by no means certain) but the remainder, Lathanial Rowe-Turner, Harry Worley, Billy McKay, Ashley Chambers, Lee Cox and the Sappzilla are all novices and hardly players who could be expected to lead us out of Division One just yet, if at all. I sort of agree and disagree Thrasian! I think if we get some good experience plyers in that are still hungry for success we have a chance of blooding 4 or 5 youngsters! I think the only youngsters at the club that have a chance next year are Weso, King, Beswick, Worley and maybe Logan. Dont think Chambers, Sappleton etc will get a chance next year and i think Porter and Sheehan are both shocking! Lee Cox could be surprise though at pushing Chambers for a place at right back!

They don't have to be first choice to play an important role and get some experience. For a lot of these kids their only look in at a start has been due to crap circumstance. Think of how much more positive it is to be considered a member of the first team squad proper and to get a chance on your merits rather than as backup player 3.
Jonezy Posted 28 June 2008 Posted 28 June 2008 After a few days of consideration, I start believing that selling some of the 'better' players is not a bad move. The team has been in decline for 4 seasons, and those 3 have played quite a part of that, so taking some of the more solidated first teamers away might be helpful in stopping this frickin decline. Thinking about it, McAuley needs a relacement, as we only have N'Gotty, Worley and some very raw youngsters until Kisnorbo returns. Stearman, and now think of the Stearman that used to frustrate us all and was given the lowest marks in the match ratings, can easily be replaced by Chambers with Cox as a backup. Hume, yes a crowd favorite, but think about the games where he didn't turn up and the historical important penalty he missed. We needed to offload strikers as we have bloody shitloads, so we might as well start with him. As much as I hate to re-do the whole squad again, I think its a good thing for the team to have a proper cleansing. I just hope, that the exodus continues, so we can finally have a more balanced squad.
Candidcamera Posted 28 June 2008 Posted 28 June 2008 Lets get over the youngsters can't progress quickly when they are given their chance. By rights both King and Porter are already capable. The reports on Ashley Chambers suggest to me that we give him a good run of games and see how he goes. We are now in a league where their ability will shine through and it is the time to look at Gradel and co. The defenders have such an opportunity with the centre backs gone. Also it is well time Weso and Fryatt came through..

The players who've already gone are the ones who divide the fans anyway. In some people's eyes (like mine) they may have been the better players. However... 1) We've gone down so we were going to get raped of our better players anyway. Why some people can't fathom this I do not know. 2) They may have been the best, but were the best of a bad bunch, so to cry over players who were ok is pretty pointless. They're gone, lets move on and see it as the opportunity to blood Thracian's team. If Pearson can get rif of some of the dross that we all agree on then plus points to him, we'll have to wait and see. Lets hope the youngsters are blooded. They are often loaned to Div 1 for experience, well, were in Div 1 now so no excuses. 4 or 5 to start with, with a further 2-3 on the fringes. So 6-8 ...please advise the best of the youngsters Thracian (taking out Mattock, Sheehan and Dodds who could easily not be here next season). If we loan any more to 'gain experience' in Div 2, then they quite obviously aren't going to make it here and should be shipped out.

Unfortunately you take out Mattock, Sheehan and Dodds and you're not left with that many, certainly not to be just thrown in. King, Hayes and Logan ( although I can't see Henderson going) yes. But I don't think many of the others are ready to be full-time first teamers, ready to be blooded yes.
Thracian Posted 28 June 2008 Author Posted 28 June 2008 Sounds like your putting excuses in early Or telling it as it is!
Candidcamera Posted 28 June 2008 Posted 28 June 2008 We will see but we have an opportunity to try the better young players. In the past we were always throwing them in and then dropping them. This time we need them. I know we can't just play a team of youngsters but I bet they start to emerge next season.
Spiritwalker Posted 28 June 2008 Posted 28 June 2008 It's about getting the balance right , I wouldn't play more than 2 youngsters in defence worley c.back - mattock f.back 2 in midfield weso/king c.mid - gradel/porter wide mid 1 up front mckay no more than 5 You'll never win nothin with a team full of youngsters A.Hansen

Think 5 is about the max to blood next year! I think Gradel and Worley will be first teamers and one of Weso or King will be in too! The players i think are shock outsiders for a place are Beswick and Lee Cox, but i hope Ashley Chambers is given a chance! Ive not seen a huge ampount of Sappleton and McKay but doubt they get many chances and i think Porter is shite!

I see what you are saying, and I agree, experience is important to have in a team. However I think you are underestimating the importance of having young players in attack, players who are at their peak and will stay fresh and provide that young creativity needed. I'm not saying that older players do not have that creativity when the ball gets into the final third of the pitch, I'm just saying that they don't seem to be quite as good as younger players. Correct me if I'm wrong. Am I just babling on about a load of nonsense? Or do you agree with me Mick P? Arsne Wenger seems to adopt the philosophy of experience at the back, a mixture in midfield, and youth upfront.
Uncle Albert Posted 28 June 2008 Posted 28 June 2008 I bloody hope he has - I've always fancied supporting Lossiemouth FC My family are from there. Really nice place, got 2 caravans up there. Some good times and laughs to go along with it aswell. Back to the thread. Hopefully Weso can hold a starting place and Chambers can break through. I just hope Pearson does get to spend some of this £3.6 Million to buy his own players and let him build his own to team to take us back up. I wouldnt mind him buying that young lad from Southampton who scored that goal against WBA. Whats his name?
Katy Posted 29 June 2008 Posted 29 June 2008 Well I've just got back from South Wales and I'm surprised it's only 2 (3 in total) I expected a few more to have gone by now, in fact I'm disappointed that there's so many left. Interestingly the only ones that are in demand are ones that arrived before Mandaric. As for alternatives waiting in the wings surely you know the Mandaric strategy by now it's called 'Flying by the seat of your pants system of management' I've just come back from North Wales and I'm also surprised it's only been the three. There may be more buggering off in the next couple of weeks but not many more I shouldn't think. Thing is now we need some players to replace them. What's the deal with David Bell? I guess now Hollowords has gone the interest has gone.
