The Gareth Barry Saga

I don't quite understand this.

Villa are talking as though Barry's not going to be playing for them next season and O'Neill's clearly resigned himself to this fate, yet why won't they accept an offer from Liverpool which is in my opinion, more than enough?

£17 million for Barry is a very fair offer I think. Barry's a good player but he's not worth anymore than that. To be fair to him I don't blame him that he wants Champions League football with a top four Premiership team, and I don't think it's very fair that Villa are holding out like this against a player who's served them so well over the years.

P.s Sorry, there's not much interesting happening today...

I'm with O'Neill.

£18 million or no deal, I see nothing wrong with that.

Do they really need him?

Probably not no.

Good on O'Neill, sticking to his guns. If Liverpools offer is £17million and Villa want £18million, why doesn't one of them just stop being stubborn for the players sake? It would make sense for Villa to back down or for Liverpool to increase their offer.

MON was insulted by the way Barry slagged him off in the media - this is a lesson to Barry and any other player that he is in charge and whether anyone wants to go or not he will decide how it happens.

Good on him - Barry has been a bit of a cnut over this and to be made to sweat a bit that the deal may fall through is no more than he deserves. Good on Lerner as well for supporting MON in this and sticking it to one of the Big 4.

I would for one manager/owner to stick to their guns when they say 'This player is not for sale' only to sell them a few weeks later.

Every player has their price.

I think it is good that Villa are holding out, the top 4 think they can bully the rest of the league!!

It's not like £17 million is an insulting offer for Barry though is it? Villa's price tag of around £20 million is way over the odds for a player like him.

Has he? I don't agree with this to be honest. I can understand his wishes to want to go and join Liverpool and I'm surprised with the way Villa have acted about it all.

I can see things from Villa's point of view as well - who wants to lose their best players? But when a player of Barry's ability and loyalty requests to move to a much bigger club to progress their careers I think they should loosen off a bit. It's not like the offer's taking the piss even - it's a solid offer that really is probably above what he's worth anyway.

He'll end up at Liverpool one way or another. He knows it. Villa know it and Liverpool know it. But who's going to compromise?

Two I think.

That changes things then.

Villa would be silly not to sell him. Yet Liverpool would be even sillier to buy him.

£17 million? They should spend that on a winger like Quaresma or someone like that.

He'll be going to Liverpool. If Portsmouth make another bid for Peter Crouch, Rafa will have the money :) Fair play to O'Neil for hanging on to his price tag of Barry.

His newspaper article where he slagged off MON and told porkies about Villa not making an effort to keep him was a very poor way for a valued member of staff and club captain to behave.

I can understand his desire to go - it is how he has gone about it that sucks arse. Fearing he would be rejected he has backed Villa into a corner whereby he has to go. I don't think anyone believed that he would act in such a fashion and are slightly shocked in the manner he has gone about this...and consequently this is why MON is saying what he is saying now.

I dont think Barry was telling porkies when he said what he did about MON. If your manager makes more effort in Austria or Switzerland, instead of speaking to you then you will feel like you are not wanted at the club.

Frankly, I think Villa can demand more than £18 million.

Since according to Liverpool, Peter Crouch is worth £15 million.

Was going to say the same, Rafa Benitez can only blame himself for the price he is paying, He wants £15m for Crouch and he also wanted £10m from Villa for Carson. Also there's a lot of bad blood between Rafa and MON.

Barry is not worth £18m but he is a key player for Villa and they don't need to sell so MON as every right to get as much as he can for him. Its now upto Liverpool to either meet the valuation or just say no thanks and go for someone else, that would put Villa in a difficult situation.
