Recommended Posts

I've come to the conclusion that my computer is a mess.

So basically i want to restore it to factory settings, but i dont want to lose all my music.

So does any one have tips on both of those things?

:)

Back-up your music or don't restore factory settings...

Sorry.

Depends on how much music you have, you could upload it all and download it once you've got your PC running again. Maybe burn them on DVD-R.

If your PC is a mess I would reformat, make sure you save all your applications first.

I've just done all this recently.

Either do what Daggers said and get an external hard drive or do what I did and burn it all to DVD's to put back on. It's all backed up for the future then too. My laptop is so much faster now I've wiped it and just put stuff back on that I actually needed.

Reformat?

And I think I just want to completely start afresh, so saving applications may not be needed.

Google 'Format XP' or 'Reformat XP' (assuming you have XP and not Vista, 98 or something else).

Delete all your shit (you'll doubtless have tons of that) and start completely from scratch. You'll be pleased you did.

You best have your Windows installation disc handy, though. :ermm:

You can:

. Create a partition.

. Use an existing partition.

. Burn it to DVDR/W.

. Use an external hard-drive.

. Get a friend with WiFi to let you take your computer around and send all your files to them by MSN, it's super fast if you're using the same internet. Then reformat in their house and send it back (I recently did this using the house PC when I wanted to reformat my laptop.)

. Fuck your music, you should have most of it on CD and if not, stop being lazy and download it again afterwards you dirty pirate fuck!

Edit: Reformating and restoring are basically the same thing. Basically means wiping your hard-drive and starting again, only in your case you're likely using something like the HP Recovery Tool if you think your computer's going to, like, magically restore itself to the condition you brought it in.

I restored mine to factory settings last week and although I now have 40% memory as opposed to 9% I don't actually feel my laptop running any faster.

Couple of questions though:

Do I really need to be accepting the updates all the time and do I need mcafee and norton or will one do

lol you're running McCaffee and Norton and you want to know why your laptop feels slow? Haha. Get rid of both, tbh. If you've payed for one of them you might as well keep it til it expires but given AVG is free and probably better than both I'd just get that. Google AVG free and just use the Windows firewall.

Between AVG and Spybot S&D you'll be fine without paying anyone anything. Go to Add/Remove programs to totally trash Norton and McCaffee.

Tbfh I'm a bit of a computer retard. Like I say, though, two bits of virus software is OTT. Especially crappy ones like Norton that slow the thing down enough as it is.

AVG. <3.

Norton is shocking.

Stear clear at all costs.

I just done this to my old dears computer, because she is clueless, she let her anti virus run out and to put it short, it took me ages to sort the whole system!

Just backed everything up to my external Harddrive and totally gutted her system out.

I did manage to stick a extra 1gb of RAM on her machine to speed it up, now she is fully protected.

If you have not already got this on your computer you should have it: http://www.spywareterminator.com/

There are so many programs similar but this is class, i have this running on every computer in my network at work and my laptop at home.

Do It.

Do you enjoy paying for protection?

YES - get shot of either one you currently have

NO - Download Avast4Home! (it's free), don't install it. Register and get the code. Unplug the internet. Uninstall your awful security software. Install Avast. Turn on internet.

 I use ZoneAlarm. Really almost anything other than the Windows Firewall.:whistle: Remember Microsoft and Security are not usually seen in the same sentence.

Yes it is so easy...

I can send you some software, it is called sharepod.

Basically you will just upload straight from the Ipod, this software bypasses the Ipods original settings, allowing you to upload from your Ipod.

If this isnt overly complicated then yes please.

Dont worry it is easy enough, I can do a small write up text file for you if you like mate. As a guide.

Let me know when you need this software, I take it your still in the process of backing your data up?

get a cheep copy of Vista (Novatech.com) and install over youe XP. It will save all your old files in a folder called 'old windows' in you c drive. just delete what you don't need after the install.

I had to do the same thing about 7 months ago when i got a virus.

But which is the best free firewall for Vista?

I've been using PC Tools Firewall Plus but it's a real pain in the arse.

As endorsed by Steven, ZoneAlarm does the job on Vista. ;)

Whether it's the best is almost impossible to measure, but I've used it for 12 months and have remained nasty-free to date, alongside good ol' (d)AVG.
