Monk Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 To this day the best fish dish I've ever had was cooked by "Mama" in a secluded beach hut on Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand. The fish was caught that day and was cooked in the most amazing chilli sauce. She also did the best spring rolls I've ever tasted. Unbelievable. Not to mention the scenery as we ate it. I must say some of the responses in here have amused me. Each to their own I guess but some of you should really expand your horizons a bit and try something other than burgers and pizza... In London: Levant - amazing Lebanese restaurant complete with belly dancers and shisha. Gaucho - best steak I've ever eaten. Veeraswamy - brilliant contemporary Indian. Les Trois Garçons - crazy decor and very good French food. So many more. If you get a chance to check out any of those go for it. Nothing beats an authentic local dish when travelling. Couple of the restaurants I went to in Argentina did the most unbelievably good steak. Local Japanese food is also awesome. Oh yeah and I am now walking past Les Trois Garcons twice a day to and from work. I really should go. £50 for 3 courses though... hopefully worth it. I've been to that Levant place, the food is awesome. Disappointed Tayyabs isnt on your list haha!

They do a good kebab at the place across the road, if you ignore all the cockroaches.

Alexikokopops Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 Yeah the difference in the city is 'there's a good kebab place across the road, if you ignore all the cocks' Haha. I'll be there some day. Planning to get moved to the London office as soon as I feasibly can. I'll stay in Reading for a bit though, pay off them overdrafts.

Lahore Kebab House on Commercial Road is meant to be the business and then as Monk pointed out there's Tayyabs which is fantastic, authentic, dirt cheap Indian. Then there's Brick Lane - consistently good curries for very cheap, especially if you barter with the guys on the door... 20% off and a free bottle of wine thank you very much. Basically, London is the bollocks when it comes to eating.

James. Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 Obviously - most capital cities in the world have the best restaurants. It's not just about the best restaurants though when it comes to London. It's about the sheer variety and diversity of cuisines that are on offer. Whether it be £5 a head or £500 a head.
Monk Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 Obviously - most capital cities in the world have the best restaurants. You've never been to Tegucigalpa then.
Alexikokopops Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 What's the name? I might know it. Sizzling Spice. On that little row of shops right by the Shinfield Road entrance of the University. You'll probably know the kebab place which I mentioned too. Oh, and reply in my Palace thread!
James. Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 You've never been to Tegucigalpa then. Or Budapest. Or Madrid even.

Proper studentville. And I just replied in the Palace thread. Don't hate me.
Tommy G Posted 22 July 2008 Author Posted 22 July 2008 You've never been to Tegucigalpa then. No but you get my drift. There is likely to be better places to eat/wider variety in somewhere like London, Rome, New York etc because the demand is there. Compare those places to somewhere likes Cov's cuisine on offer and it's just incomparable! there is a reason why Gordon Ramsay has his restaurants in London rather than Tamworth £££££

Zingari Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 Off the floor it could possibly be that ; the best place is probably relative to how hungry you are
James. Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 I'm on Christchurch Road! Right opposite the little row of shops where Gregs is. By the traffic lights. Haha. I know exactly where you mean. I lived at the other end of Christchurch towards the town centre. There used to be a well nice Indian on the end of that little row called Devana but I think it turned into a cafe or something. Is Medina kebabs still there? That place have me food poisoning in the 1st year. Bastards. I relied on the kebab van parked just across the road from then on. Also have you discovered Mandela Court yet??!!
fox123 Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 We stayed just across the road, this year, but I'm afraid we found an Italian in Cocoa Beach that was, in their terms, "awesome".The Double Dragon is the Chinese, it is a bloody good restaurant. The Indian you mention isn't Charmalee, is it? I know that there is a takeaway next door as well. Dipali is much, much better. The Double Dragon is very nice, Sundays they do an all you can eat Buffet. Dupali is also very nice, and I would also highly recommend the food at the Quarter Bar in town!
Webbo Posted 22 July 2008 Posted 22 July 2008 We stayed just across the road, this year, but I'm afraid we found an Italian in Cocoa Beach that was, in their terms, "awesome". It wasn't an 'Olive Garden' was it? We found one on I Drive. It might be a chain, but it was the best Italian I've ever had. We had some good meals in Turkey this year though I can't remember any of their names, strangely though the donner kebabs were crap.
