Luton Post Match

Some perspective:

The average age of the team that started was a tad over 23 with 6 of them below that age and 4 of them new to the first team.

The average age of the team that finished was 21+ with 5 of them below that age and 5 of them new to the first team.

Admittedly I didn't go to the game.

That's because they took Howard off second half

Reminds me a little bit of the Andy Murray is a great prospect argument, DavieG. Which holds water until it's pointed out that Nadal is almost the same age.

Not quite the same though in a team situation, the more youngsters you have the more likely that you're going to have a mix of Murray's and Nadals.

Besides the number of newbies is probably more significant the back four though out last night have hardly played any games together, not even perming any 2 from the 4/5

That's because they took Howard off second half

Except they brought Kish on.

Can't be bothered with extensive ratings but the folowing made an impression of varying kinds:

Logan 5 (I don't know what he's been learning since he's been on loan but not a lot by the looks of things. First half he seemed perpetually uncertain. Perhaps it was having a new defence in front of him but he never once looked decisive and commanding although he had no chance at all with their goal. Second half was a bit better but there were still too many crosses fizzing over or near our six yard box to feel comfortable.

Worley 6.5 (Made some impressive headed clearances and interceptions but he or Morrison should never have give the Luton scorer so much time and space for his goal, well as it was taken.

Neither Mattock or Chambers looked particularly convincing during their time at left back. In Chambers case it was back to his old habit of defending well enough but spoiling it with so many indifferent passes.

Our opening central midfield partnership of Wesolowski and Oakley never wrestled dominance. It was all poredictable sideways and backwards passing without a flicker of imagination. Kishishev tried to take some initiatives but after 15-20 minutes his momentum started to wane.

Gradel was Man of the Match by a distance, the one player we had who never stopped trying to find a killer pass. Set up our goal, having previously gift-wrapped what should have been a simple header for Howard and delivered more crosses into the area than our previously wingers have mostly managed in any two matches put together.

Adams was disappointing. He tried a couple of runs, decided the Luton left-back was quick enough and mean enough and basically did the simple thing thereafter in stark contrast to Gradel who although victim of a few hefty challenges himself just kept on attacking both his man and the space in the penalty area to earn the reward of an assist and the satisfaction ofknowing it should have ben two.

Overall though we were often matched by a Luton team which had been decimated and our inability to retain possession with any prolonged composure was alarming.

Okay we are far more threatening on the flanks and you have to believe that Howard and DJ should score a stack of goals in division one but neither looked in any way inspired and the lack of invention and supporting from midfield was as bad as ever.

If you didn't go to the game, just read what Thracian has posted. Absolute sense right there.

Agree with every word, especially the midfield part.

Not so much. I mean, fair point Gradel had a decent game, but to me he looked a little clumsy on the ball and unsure of himself at times. It may have been that I expected too much of him because of how he'd been built up, but I was slightly underwhelmed by him on the whole yesterday. :dunno:

I felt Lloyd Dyer (or is it Ashley Chambers?? ;):P ) was our MoTM. The guy seems like he's got a non-stop engine, and he was shifting some knots all over the park yesterday. I liked the guy, direct and gets at defenders. Deserved his goal and took it well where DJ would have ****ed it up. Hopefully he can be consistent and gets better as the season progresses.

That was so funny when every chanted ROONEY ROONEY at the kid selling programmes, and being escorted back to the station. "Your going to get a lifetime ban" and the fat policeman who couldnt put his baton away  . Wtf happenned at the station though?? Me and my mate were looking from the opposite side of the Station.

That poor kid, but he did look like a larger version of Rooney! We were behind you when you were being escorted to the station, it was funny, i can't believe people were sitting in the road tho, when singing sit down if you love Leicester!

I said we were "far more threatening on the flanks" and Dyer's goal only emphasised the point. The flanks were the least of our worries at Luton.

It was better at Sheff Yoo, until the Coppers took out the batons. :|

lol

To be honest, i thought DJ worked really hard last night, his movement was very good, he was always looking to at least try and do something. He may not have scored, but his movement did create a lot of space for Dyer, Gradel, etc to run into.

You was escorted in a friendly.

Yeah and then they (meaning the police) ****ed off ten minutes before "Luton Youth" turned up. Appalling policing. When they did show up, they shoved all the hooligan kids on the train and left them for the passengers and train guard to worry about. Still, I had a front row seat for the "action". Can't work out why anyone would want to put themselves in that situation but they seemed to enjoy getting their heads kicked in. Bizarre.

 A football coach relative of mine made exactly the same point.

I'm not disputing that we were more threatening on the flanks than we've been in a long time, more disputing you saying Gradel was MoTM by a distance. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and mine was one of being underwhelmed by Gradel on the whole, though he did show glimpses of quality and what he can do, and Lloyd Dyer being MoTM. Where I said "the flanks were our biggest problem and we need to sort them, pronto" I'll never know.

lol

DJ was impressive with his movement for me as well. I think it was unfair on his part that every time he isolated a defender and had him one on one in a situation where he was waiting for a through ball to utilise his pace, it never arrived, and perhaps made him appear to be having a worse game than he was. I'm not going to excuse his finishing though, because that was massively sub-standard, especially the one in the first half where he was virtually one on one with the 'keeper.
