Fox in a Box Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Ok Stephen Clemence is club captain, but with a new season upon us, and a new manager to boot, who do you feel has the passion and drive to take the foxes back up. I feel that this is quite an important job and has been overlooked by the recent managers. We need a born leader in the Walsh/Taggs mould and the heatbeat is the defence but we need someone in midfield I think to run as Captain, but Clemence didnt show me the passion last year so who would you choose. I'd go for Matt Oakley, I think that he needs a boost and this could be the oppurtunity.
Father Ted Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 I would go for Oakley aswell. But tbh, as long as it isn't Clemence...
billyfox1 Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 i'd go for kisnorbo when he is fit but i think Oakley will have it on a permanent basis by then. i don't think we really have anyone with the leadership qualities of walsh/taggs.

On the Walsh/Taggs/Elliott mould, I reckon Morrison or Worley in a a few years time.

So you want to take the captaincy of one player, and give to another player, who is exactly the same as the player you have taken the captaincy off, in just about every department.

Fox in a Box Posted 24 July 2008 Author Posted 24 July 2008 So you want to take the captaincy of one player, and give to another player, who is exactly the same as the player you have taken the captaincy off, in just about every department. its not about the position they play is about giving other players drive, look at John Terry , look at Stevie G, they have the passion and that rubs off on others..... I just dont think Clem did it.

I just dont think Clem did it. The point is - Oakley is exactly the same for drive and passion. We do not have anyone who ticks those boxes on the basis of last season and Oakley hasn't done it in two friendlies.
Fox in a Box Posted 24 July 2008 Author Posted 24 July 2008 Well thats my opinion, you have yours, maybe a defender, N Gotty?
Manwell Pablo Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Well thats my opinion, you have yours, maybe a defender, N Gotty? oh my.
Joe. Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Ah the classic "Who should be captain?" thread. How can you possibly say who should be captain when nobody knows all of the players personally?
billyfox1 Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Well thats my opinion, you have yours, maybe a defender, N Gotty? i think we'd be better off with someone who is actually on the pitch.
Simi Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Anybody that says Oakley has obviously not been to a pre-season match yet.
FilboFox Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 A captain needs to lead, motivate, be passionate about the football and the club, control the team during the good AND bad times and generally be a presence on the pitch... out of the current crop of players, it'd be hard to pick one who could fit that description. Oakley might be good... but the days when we had King Matty at the back are long gone and it's a real shame.
SamL Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Personally, I don't think we have anybody who you would class as a natural leader. Clemence has proven in the past he has what it takes, but didn't step up to the plate last season. I can't see why anybody would want to take the captaincy from Clemence and give it to Oakley because they're pretty much the same type of player. We can't give the captaincy to Kisnorbo because he's injured until January and will probably leave during the next transfer window. I'm not gunna make a judgment on who I think should be captain until we see which other players are coming in.
Daggers Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Well thats my opinion, you have yours, maybe a defender, N Gotty? Incredible. Have you watched City play football anytime over the last couple of seasons? Maybe you'd like to highlight the matches where you spotted Oakley displaying captaincy qualities? It may help if you also state what it was he did in the style of a captain as well because I am ****ed if I can remember him so much as pointing at anything let alone opening his mouth and making a noise. Are you aware that N'Gotty is a third choice defender? Incredible.
Ric Flair Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Ah the classic "Who should be captain?" thread. How can you possibly say who should be captain when nobody knows all of the players personally? That's a little silly. It's there to see who is the most vocal and passionate on the pitch and that is the debate here. That we more than likely need someone who fit's that bill.

davieG Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 Gradel, then we wont have any punch ups when it comes to penalties.
Joe. Posted 24 July 2008 Posted 24 July 2008 That's a little silly. It's there to see who is the most vocal and passionate on the pitch and that is the debate here. That we more than likely need someone who fit's that bill. There are plenty of vocal and passionate players on a pitch. But not all of them possess characteristics that would make them a good captain. Take Paddy McCarthy for example, he was a vocal player and he was made captain. As to why I am unsure seeing as the man was as unpredictable as anybody, earning himself cards for ridiculous things that captains should tell others off for. I understand that there are clearly more natural players in our team suitable for captain i.e. those who have captained sides previously but I'm not sure that's good enough to make a concrete judgement on. Looking at our squad there are probably only three candidates for this; Clemence, Oakley and Kishishev. All three have both Premier League experience and captain experience somewhere along the line and I'd be surprised if it went any other way.
