Thracian Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 Joking aside, mine would be the lack of height! Weso's not exactly a giant. But in some ways having small midfielders helps concentrate the mind on keeping the ball on the floor. We're always hopeless when it's up in the air and the best passing side I ever saw was the Leeds team of diminutive Billy Bremner and not much bigger Johnny Giles. They kept the ball for minutes on occasions. To my mind it would play to our strengths.
Tilley Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 Henderson Chambers Hobbs Tunchev Mattock Gradel Wesolowski Adams Porter Campbell Fryatt

There's gonna be 11 other players on the pitch and if the easiest way for them to get the ball in our net is to simply kick it over our heads they will.

Which is exactly why King can be so valuable in midfield. Because at the moment there's no signs that our back four can cope on their own.

That said, i still believe that if you start with Adams, Gradel and Porter as 3 of your 4 man midfield the other team are going to think it's Christmas coem early . I know all three of them can battle well, but sometimes perception is greater than fact

Lillehamring Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 I semi-agree. By which I mean I agree and I'm nursing a semi. Porter should only play centrally if we go with a 5-man midfield, free the wingers almost entirely of defensive responsibility and play two less attack minded midfielders like King and Weso behind them. Only trouble is that rules out Fryatt, who plays almost in midfield anyway, and Howard, who's much too slow to play alone, as a lone striker. In that lineup I could see Campbell, Dickov(?) or even someone like McKay profitting. not saying it would work, or that it would be worth trying , but the other option would be to go.... tunchev - hobbs - morrison (for example) weso adams - king/oakley - dyerporterfryatt - campbell ..or some such combination
Jonbluefox9 Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 I'd start with Gradel on the bench and then bring him on, when the season starts. It might sound crazy but I think if you start with Gradel and things don't go too well, bringing Dyer or Adams on for him (depends which wing he's been playing on) will have little impact. Bringing Gradel on would dramatically change the way we play. I think Dyer and Adams can produce goals for us during the coming season but they're not the kind of players to come off the bench and change a game. I'm sure I'll be in the minority on this one
Ric Flair Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 I hope King is given a start tomorrow, if he had pace he'd be already established in the first team as that's the one thing that hinders his game slightly. I have not been impressed with Oakley this pre-season, Wesolowski has looked decent and Kishishev looks up for it. I still think King would give us a different dimension and his shooting ability and heading ability are plus points.

I'm sure I'll be in the minority on this one I know what you mean, but there aren't many teams who use their best attacking player as a super sub because of their ability to change a game in an instant. You have to play that player as much as possible.

You have to play that player as much as possible. True, I don't think there's many players like Gradel in League One though. I can see us losing a game 2-0, Gradel gives up and then we bring Dyer on who can't change things at all. Maybe Pearson's managed to change Gradel's attitude slightly, there were signs that he has done on Tuesday night, and if he has then he could become a 90 minute player for us. For me, he's still a 45 minute player despite what he's shown in pre-season.
Wooly Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 I concur Jonbluefox. I don't think Gradel will start against the Dons; I'm still sure the midfield will Adams, Kish, Oakley and Dyer. I think Kish will be a revelation for us this season and be one of our best players - audatious statement perhaps! Don't get me wrong Gradel will get a lot of game time but I think Adams has sealed that right hand spot and Gradel hasn't played once on the left yet this pre-season as far as I know?

From speaking to a Bouremouth season ticket holder, there were some games where Gradel was quiet, then all it took was one run and a sniff at goal and he'd changed the game. That's the thing with him, people will expect him to be full throttle all game, every game. But some games he'll probably be kept quiet, but he still possesses that magic of being able to destory teams in an instant. I hope he starts, I also hope Adams starts as well. With those two we could have a lot of games wrapped up by half time.
bigneville Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 If he is our best attacking player. You cannot keep him on the bench. He has to play as many minutes as possible.

With those two we could have a lot of games wrapped up by half time. I can believe that. I've seen a fair bit of him in the past and his playing style has mostly remained the same, without meaning to rubbish any work he's done in training. I'm not sure what he did at Bournemouth. I've read stats and the odd report but the situation they were in makes me think their supporters could forgive Gradel's tendency to switch off and on as he pleased. I don't think our supporters will be as forgiving, especially this season. He is a talent, he's exciting but he's still got a lot to do imo. I hope and think he'll be made to earn his place in the starting 11 with impressive substitute appearances during the 2008/09 season because no offence to Bournemouth but Leicester City's first team is a step-up for him.
Lillehamring Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 it's great that we can't decide who our best midfield it is, so nice to know that we have good subs... when was the last time we had this dilema!
knowitall Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 I can say that no one will guess the correct starting line up for the Palace match. Why? You will see.
Simi Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 I can say that no one will guess the correct starting line up for the Palace match. Why? You will see. We're fielding a dedication XI to the 90's Leicester heroes?

Wooly Posted 1 August 2008 Posted 1 August 2008 Hobbs/Tunchev in midfield? Ash Chambers starting? Can't really see much that would surprise us too much from that squad?
