Dickov Fits Bill

DICKOV FITS BILL

10:30 - 08 August 2008

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson says returning striker Paul Dickov is exactly what the club needs going into tomorrow's "acid test" against MK Dons.

The fiery spirit and determination of City's latest acquisition epitomises the whole attitude of the club ahead of the new League One campaign.

Pearson, who welcomed Dickov as his eighth signing yesterday after a lengthy transfer process, said of the 35-year-old: "He is maybe at the wrong end of his career age-wise, but I know he is very fit, has a great strength of character and is exactly the type of player we want.

"He was a big favourite with the fans here before and I am sure he will be again."

Dickov, who has signed a two-year deal, shares the same aim as everyone at the Walkers Stadium, which is promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt and then an assault on the Premier League - just as he did the last time he was at the club between 2002 and 2004.

He said: "It's great to be back here and there is only one target, to get the club back up to where it belongs, which is certainly not in this division, and I want to help them do it. I believe I can do a job here and, after talking with the manager, I know there is a lot of belief here that it can be done and I am really looking forward to the new season."

Dickov goes straight into contention for a place against MK Dons at the Walkers tomorrow, increasing the competition up front. His timely arrival is just another boost to Pearson's optimism on the eve of the campaign.

The City boss said: "We are as ready as we can be. The mood is good, positive and now it is all about performing, as simple as that.

"The last two games against Birmingham City and Crystal Palace were good and I have been pleased with them, but I think it is important not to get too carried away with pre-season games one way or the other, whether it is a win, a defeat or a draw.

"It is about going out and performing in these league games that really matters.

"Preparation has been positive, but the acid test is always when you take the field, and I think it is important there should be no complacency.

"But by the same yardstick, we can not show any fear so it is always about getting that balance right between being confident and being on edge."

Like every other team, City want to get off to a flier and Pearson said: "For us this year, the start is going to be very important and I am really keen for us to go out and put a marker down.

"The season is upon us and players and staff alike are looking forward to it. The opening games are important.

"People talk about the business end of the season, but the points on the opening day are as important as at any other time.

"We will be under pressure from the start but it is a pressure that, as a professional sportsman, you should relish and embrace, because you want to be under positive pressure.

"I am pleased with the strength of the squad, with all the new players, and very pleased with the application and attitude of the players who were here before, so that balance has been good.

"The club have been very supportive in bringing in new players and it is now up to us to go out and get results."

I think it is risky to start with Dickov. He hasn't had much match play with the current members of the squad and tomorrow, I would use him as an impact player in the second half and give him about 30 minutes to run their defence ragged.

NP may do the same with Gradel, although the majority of us don't want to see him do that.

If the team gets off to a flying start tomorrow, keeping things at a very quick tempo, bring on Dickov second half.

I would start with Howard and Fryatt. Fryatt deserves to start because he's scored goals in pre-season, and Howard, from what I saw against Birmingham, links up well with him.

Dickov has had no friendlies over pre-season so match sharpness is a problem. Put him on the bench and bring him on after an hour/70 minutes (if required).

exactly, it seems that he has put the work in by losing half a stone and putting in some very good performances so thats what you get for trying hard, you should start and i really hope he does!

Paul Dickov was in JJB sports, Fosse Park this Friday buying himself a pair of adidas "World Cup" football boots from my son for about £80, he wanted size 6.5 they don't do half sizes so he had to settle for a size 7.(That LUCKY 7 Just might be the extra Quarter of an inch that gets us a goal one day!)

He Stated he was "Feeling great and very confidence about promotion".... :scarf:
