cheers for that pupleronnie.

i can remember a lot about the 2 play-off days against portsmouth,

but very little about the games.

did oldfield score the equaliser from the edge of the box,

or is my age catching me up.

I was there, I barely remember the match either (a haze of alcohol and pompey is a long trip).

All I really remember is the tense atmosphere and Ormondroyd being offside for his goal. I remember coming out of the stadium happy but shocked not believeing Ormondroyd has put us through to the final.

Oldfiel shot from edge of box but Ormondroyd put it in on the line to make it 1-1 . Steve Thompson scored to put us 2-1 up . They equalised on the night late on but we went through 3-2 on agg

leicester v portsmouth..........city ground,nottingham..........play-off.........1st semi-final.

filbert streets having a makeover,so we're in luck,

two play-off games,both away,

a couple of cars leave our area, and we've brought the flag.

we park up near the ground, and straight out onto the streets,

a visit to the shop, and take in the atmosphere,

the road we're on is full of leicester,

it's got the air of a carnival,or wembley cup final.

a massive kick about takes place,on a busy road,

for those going down the city since the seventies, this is brilliant,

in the ground.

decent seats, with the trent end to our right,

leicester fans create a frenzied atmosphere,

the team give it their all,we limit portsmouth to not a lot of chances.

iv'e read in a book on portsmouth, that our goal was offside,

nothing needs to be said on that.

our moment,

julian joachim has the ball, half way line,he's facing the portsmouth goal,

he's off, straight through the midfield and defence,

they just ai'nt gonna stop him unless they have a 12 bore,

he's in their area,full pelt,bang,

the balls in the net, thousands of leicester go mad.

portsmouth fans are quiet,we see the game out,

a goal up,none conceded, that'l do to take down to the south coast.

we leave the ground, get on a main road,

suddenly chaos reigns, theres a lot of running about going on around us,

police are playing deathrace 2000,and theres portsmouth present,

the situation sorts itself out,and theres bad news,

one of ours has been arrested, with the flag,

we spend the next 2 hours lurking around west bridgeford police station,

waiting for the flag, and our mate,

just a few days to wait, then it's down to their patch,

the famous cowardly pompy.

they were the days purple ronnie,

young free and single,

i went to the walkers for a couple of seasons,

the last season i watched the lads,it was arguement after arguement with the stewards,

you can't do this, you can't do that, and that was in l1,

i miss the 80s and 90s,but life moves on,

i want to sit at home in my slippers reading leicester fans experiences,

instead i'm doing it,

not an easy task with the old memory playing tricks,

still, listenning to the lads on the radio still gives you the buzz,

to a certain extent.

i'll have to do portsmouth another day,i can't remember anything of the game,

outside of the ground,

i can remember it like it was yesterday. :chant:

sparky,

any chance you wanna contribute any 90s tales,

one game in the 90s i can remember well is the play-off final v swindon,

2 goals in a couple of minutes to make it 3-3,gasping for breath with all the excitement,

after the game in central london,

we were getting praise off a group of juventus fans.

I could fill pages of my tales mate . May do 1 tomorrow . Gotta decide between Derby 0 City 4 , Sheff Utd 1 City 3 or our 3-2 victory at Molineux

Then i remembered "Terry giz a song" ah Leicester.....

Bit of a simple lad who used to take an old rattle

Anyone else remember him????

just a word on the play-offs,i think they are brilliant,

you spend all season going through every emotion in the book,

watching the games, travelling around the country,

different towns,different experiences,highs,and a few lows,

come the end of a long season, your three games from being promoted to a higher league,

with that,comes bigger grounds,bigger crowds,

and more media exposure for the team and city,

and of course it also means the team will be strengthened,if you win.

oh,and the last game is played at wembley.

portsmouth v leicester.....fratton park...play-off semi-final....second leg.

leicester lead 1-0 from the first leg.

after taking two full cars for the first leg in nottingham,we're down to a half full car for this one,

work commitments, the cost, and a pitifull ticket allocation all contribute to the low turnout,

travel plans are for a 12 midday start.

it's shortly after 6.30am and theres a knock on my door,

seems someone else is expecting a knock,so we're setting off earlier than arranged, like now,

we're out of the city, and heading down the m1,

it's sunny, warm, and if the boys can get through the game without losing,

we'll be going to wembley, home of english football.

we stop just outside portsmouth for a kingsize meal,it's relaxing, and we're full of antisipation,

a few more miles and the feelings will change,we'll be in a different enviroment,

with a whole town of people wanting the exact opposite of what we want.

we're parked up near the ground for 12 midday, the time we'd planned to leave leicester,

we walk up the road, past the fratton pub and bookies.

we cross over the road by a park,we've found what we're looking for,

nice big pub, giant treehouse in the pub garden,it's got family friendly written all over it.

we settle in the bar, relax, and chat about the game.

about 3pm we notice the 657 graffiti in the toilets,

we start to think we may not have picked the best pub to chill out in.

theres a leicester family in shirts at the table to our right,

we've got the table facing the bar,

the pubs filling up,and theres hardly anyone wearing pompy shirts,

you know they ar'nt leicester, but by now, whos bothered,

times moving on,and theres a sudden commotion,

more pompy enter the pub, some wet with beer, some with blood on them,

it's clear somethings kicked off,

we just sit and watch the pompey acting out whats just occured,

the noise levels increased and we're getting noticed,

we decide to leave,

outside the pub we nearly bump into about 80 pompy under fives,as they enter the pub we've just left,

walk to the ground, alongside the locals,in the turnstiles, game on.

the match is full of twists and turns, its tense and i don't think leicester are ever behind in the tie,

joachims first leg goal is priceless,

it's 2-2 and the full-time whistle goes,

you can no longer see much grass as the home fans fill the pitch,

and head in the direction of the leicester fans,

they are stopped just short,by a line of police.

after a short wait in the ground,we leave by the side,

down the road by the fratton pub you can make out 100s of irate locals,

then when the leicester move up the road, things turn sour,

the next 30 minutes leave a lot of leicester people with utter contempt,

for portsmouth.

cowardly attacks on normal fans, with the local police standing nearby,

it leaves a bad taste.

it's a while later when the time to relax comes,

we're finally out of portsmouth and on the motorway,

with a trip to wembley to look forward to.

hereford v leicester.....fa cup.................23rd january 1982.............attendance,10602.

the older lads have got a coach for this game,it's special,it's the fa cup,

we leave leicester and for some reason we head to coventry for a stop,

the stops a bit too long for some and we're worried we'll miss kick-off,

on we go and theres a drinking competition taking place at the back of the coach,

personally, us young'uns put vinegar on our chips, but it's good entertainment,

the coach is bombing along,we've got cans, rubbish and urine flowing fore and aft along the floor,

the competitors of the drinking competition are looking a bit queezy by now.

we arrive in hereford,park up,

us young'uns head straight to the ground,

theres a commotion in the street,we go through the turnstiles, someones still giving us grief even though we're in,

he's trying to put his face in ours and is talking a load of gobbaldy-gook,

could be hereford,or rumours of cardiff attending could be true.

the games in progress, the atmosphere in the small ground is best described as a mixture of bedlam, crazy and mad,

the leicester end is packed,

at the bottom of the terracing is a wide walkway,

when larry may scores our end errupts,it's party time,

the walkway at the bottom is now a dance floor as a conga begins,

the young'uns are in on the conga early,it soon grows larger,

while the conga goes round you can just see the heads of the players frantically giving their all,

suddenly, leicester get a penalty, the conga halts for a minute or two.

stevie lynex takes the penalty,we can't see a thing, just the back of the goalnet and the goalkeepers head.

the kicks taken, everyone jumps up,theres a groan,it must have been saved,

never mind,it's back to the conga.

the final whistle goes,we're through to round 5 of the fa cup,

we leave the ground, the moods euphoric, but not for long,

seems our coach driver went straight home after dropping us earlier,

now theres a problem, luckyly a few enterprising individuals run aound dividing our party amoungst coaches and vans,

two of us are with hinckley or loughborough supporters club,

it's amazing how the situations been saved so quick,

and with so few dramas,ah..the fa cup.

we wer'nt to know,but we'd actually get a good run in 1981/82,

in the next round we beat watford at a rocking filbert street,

followed by the epic win over shrewsbury,5-2 and three different goalkeepers being used.

that game set leicester up for a massive game against tottenham in the semi-final of the fa cup,

at neutral villa park.

Was that the night it rained?

Yes it pi**ed it down, went on the football special (me and my mate probably the only ones who actually paid) got held at the train station until the pitch was passed fit, city fans seemed to take over nottingham that night, hreat memories, got soaked my mate wore a bin bag to keep dry.

Aston Villa 4 - 4 away was another great memory for me, went with my best mate who has since passed away so always remember this game. Villa battered us for most of the night Dwight Yorke impressive, Tommy Johnson missed loads of chances before he scored so he got loads of stick. Villa park at the time (not sure about now) had corporate boxes above the away fans so they gave us loads when it was 4-1 laughing at the city fans. Then all I can remember was one of the best comebacks I have seen, Micky Galloway and David Lowe making massive contributions, an altogether great night for me and fond memories.

On the subject of Micky Galloway I remember a City Everton fixture when he wound up Big Duncan and Vinny Samways so much that they both ended up getting red carded, Samways hacking him down right in front of the ref, lol Happy days

So many memories of the 1980's how brilliant and terrible it was. But most of my early 90 memories are a bit of a alcoholic blur.

I do remember a night at Notts County around 91/92 where it seemed we had more fans inside the ground than the home team, it was Zenith Data Cup thingy, semi final I think, we won in extra time, it was an amazing night, we ended up losing to the other nottingham side in the final.

This was quickly supassed the same season when we beat Cambridge utd in the semi final play offs 5-0, which remains one of the best nights I had at filbert street and one of the best performances I've ever seen from Leicester.

You will find the Notts County game on you tube, if you look hard enough.

The Cambridge game is on Bentleys Roof videos, well worth a look.

I remember the Notts game I think we took about 7 thousand that day and they started putting us in one pen behind the

goal ,when that was full they opened up the next pen and everyone spilled into that and when that was full they opened

a third pen which became over full and people spilled on to the pitch which was a bit of a worry as this was not long after

Hillsborough.

I can remember listening to Radio Leicester for the Southend game back in the days before live comentry when they used

to interupt songs with the goal horn, with about 87 mins gone we were 1-0 down and they were playing Come Dancing

and they had to interupt it twice with the Leicester goal horn. Happy days.

Posted

Blackburn away in the season we had Kevin Campbell and Paul Moran on loan, freezing cold standing in their sh*thole of a ground.

Simon Morgan ran the length of the pitch and volleyed in a Gary Mac cross and we won 4-2.

Cold, cold, cold, cold, cold.

anybody know who scored leicesters goals at fratton park, portsmouth,

around 1993,play-off semi-final,

i think the equaliser was from the edge of the penalty area,

could have been lee philpot,as i'm sure it was from a left footer.

cheers in anticipation.
