Growing up as a city fan i heard many stories , can fans of these generations answer with FACT or MYTH !

Feel free to add your own questions

City only signed Frank Worthington due to him failing a medical at Liverpool ?

City held talks to bring Johan Cruyff to the club ?

City and Tigers bid to share a new stadium on the site of Beaumont Leys shopping centre ?

On promotion to the top flight Jock Wallace told the media that we would win the league ?

Posted

1,2 and 4 are correct, but not sure about 3.

Frank had high blood pressure (no surprise there), Jock Wallace tried to sign Cruyff and I do remember him saying that they would win the league.

I concur on the 1,2 and 4, we did look to build at Beaumont Leys whether it was secretly planned to ground share I don't know it certainly wasn't made public.

Was this attempt to sign Cruyff at the height of his career or when he was about 45 ?

Just into his 30's I reckon.

Just checked on Wiki he left Barcelona at 32 and signed for the New York Cosmos so I guess it would have been around then.

i think there was some minor heart condition that scuppered wortho's move to liverpool ;

did graham cross give sniffer clarke a bit of a clout on the bus home from wembley ?

why were Steve Moran, Mick Kennedy and Wayne Clarke (who had been reasonable at other clubs ) so shite at City and rapidly moved out? (more questions than answers!)

That could apply to 20 or more players we've had in the last few years.

of course that's quite true- it's just that these were big money signings in a time when the turnover in players seemed less rapid than at present- I think Kennedy and Clarke cost bundles and played only a handful of games between them- odd

I think Cruyff turned us down as we didnt yet have a Morrisons in Leicester!!

or more likely, he heard that he'd have to play in beaumont leys....

Another rumour doing the rounds was :-

One of the reasons Keith Weller (RIP) left Chelsea for City in the early 70s was that he was busy servicing other players wives including Ron (Chopper) Harris. ;0)

Did Peter Taylor have the choice of signing akinbiyi or eidur gudjonsson for 4 millipn pounds?

Did Peter Taytlor only offer 1 million pound for hartson at his peak when he could have got it for just a little more? This the same season he signed wise for 2 million ?

He did and turned down Gudjonsson???

I worked at the club at the time, We offered 3.5 million for John Hartson i actually saw the fax confirmation come through in Andrew Neville (the club secretary) office.

Also in summer before he was sacked his planned signings were all up and comming players namely - Roy Carroll, Peter Crouch and Bobby Zamora. All were kiboshed by the board due to the failure of his previous unknown signings and we ended up with the willy puller Wise, Ian walker and the like!!!

One rumour I heard was that Frank Worthington had to leave Leicester because he was knocking off an under age girl and her dad threatened to go to the papers if he didn't get out of town.

Beaumont Leys was looked at during the late 70's, an all encompassing sports stadium (aka Neu Camp!!!!) I remeber it being in the Mercury.

When City got to the Cup final in 69 there was a big bust up over endorsements the players wanted to pool all the endorsements and split them equally. I beleive Clarke refused and a few of the bigger boys were not happy. I heard the rumour that Crossy (legend) stuck one on him. From what I remember whenever City played Leeds and Crossy was in our side Clarke invented a mystery injury!

Another legend one of the best to wear the shirt....... I heard this too but I think he had just run out of women full stop. Anyone remember Shiltons first return to Filbert St with Stoke. In the mercury he was quoted as saying the Leicester fans would welcome him back only to be greeted with the whole of the kop telling him what Frankie had done to his missus ...classic

By the way bumped into FW in Ibiza a few years ago ...classy blonde on arm!

thanks  sounds a reasonable thing for the tank to do

i heard that the argument was over sniffer's sneering at the other team members who were relegated and gloating that he was off to leeds ( already a done deal)

was it true that Frank's Swedish missus ran up huge telephone bills because she was constanly on the phone to her family in sweden and it cost him about a month's wages ?
