A Muslim is suing Tesco, claiming religious discrimination

A Muslim said he is suing Tesco for religious discrimination because he was asked to handle crates of alcohol in a warehouse.

Mohammed Ahmed, 32, was employed at the supermarket giant's Lichfield depot in September last year for a job that included transporting various goods on fork-lift trucks.

The Saudi Arabia national told a tribunal he had not been told when he started the job that he would be handling alcoholic drinks - a task he said was against his Islamic beliefs.

The situation came to a head in the run-up to Christmas last year, when more alcohol was ferried to the warehouse in preparation for the festive season.

Mr Ahmed, who moved to Derby in 2006, complained to Tesco in February, but claims he was treated unfairly as a result. After eight months working for the company, he left in protest.

The decision on his legal action, after a three-day employment tribunal held in Birmingham, is expected next week.

He said: "It's in our religion that we are not allowed to handle alcohol. In the UK there's equal opportunities that should protect me and my beliefs.

"I was asking for my rights. I am not saying I am a perfect person but there was a conflict with my beliefs."

Tesco claimed Mr Ahmed was made aware at his induction that he would be handling alcohol, and that every effort was made to find him an alternative role in the warehouse. But the claimant, of Upper Dale Road, Normanton, claims he was victimised by managers because of his stance.

A Tesco spokesman said: "Cases like this are very rare as managers are trained to be culturally sensitive and have an 'open door policy' to staff for issues like this as everyone is welcome to work at Tesco."

I thought it was against relegion to drink it, not carry it! :dunno:

If he dont like it move out, TBH call me racist, but some of these people come into our country, dont speak much english, claim benefits, or take up cheap work, which prevents english people from getting work, causing the government more money.

We should adopt and Australian type thing, your only allowed in the UK, if you can provide a skill/ trade ware

To be honest it's English people that are they lazy bastards when it comes to working in an environment like that, they say the Polish people are hard grafters, but that is for one reason, they work as many hours as possible, for 3-4 months, go home and claim their tax back...now thats a f00kin joke!

Back onto subject I can't see the bloke getting anywhere, like I said I'm pretty sure it's not against religion to carry alcohol.

Suppose its his religion at the end of the day.

Not many people on here would want to do something if it was strongly against there beliefs im guessing, but obviously he didnt really need to sue them, there is probably other ways he could of dealt with it.

I think that is absolute bollocks, personally.

Fair enough if he they was forcing the stuff down his neck but he only had to carry a few crates, which wouldn't be braking his religion.

If it is in his job description that he will have to lift and carry objects then he wont be able to sue them surely? Religion or not.

Tesco will probably agree an out of court settlement so they dont get bad publicity.

We should have introduced that policy a long time ago, now it is to late.

I don't mind the people coming in if they work hard, but when I hear of things like this (and it happens a lot) it really pisses me off.

it's 1 person for christ sake! you can't generalise it to a whole religious group. well, you can, but you'd be making a complete tit of yourself.

Ok good citizen.

My comment was actually not worthy of your outcry. lol

There are worse comments.

Mine was, just stating the obvious.

I have no problem with religion, couldn't give a shit to be honest, As long as people don't take the piss when they come here (which as I said does happen a lot)

then I have no objections to them being here.
