Lack of competition!

I mentioned this against Walsall, and today it became more evident.

Steve Howard and Matty Fryatt are in a comfort zone. We have no strikers to challenge them and keep them on their toes. So that automatically makes them a bit lazy. Nothing personal. That's how human beings are - when there no one fighting for your place, you become more laid back and careless.

Same goes for Matt Oakley and Andy King. We need an attacking midfielder on our books so we can have a healthy competition.

Our defence is pretty good, and so are our wingers. One of the reasons, I believe, is because we have players challenging and fighting for positions. Max Gradel, for example, knows he can't play shit on a regular basis without being dropped.

Pearson needs to address this issue asap. The lack of competition is affecting us.

I think the return of Dickov could be a key and might just wake up our strikers but you are right there is a lack of competition and the only way to really sort it is either A: dip in the loan market or B: bring in the youth, A is the more likely as B could be risky but we are in league 1 maybe it's time to find a new star or 2, there's players being talked about but when will they get there chances? it took Gradel a while, if you got the talent it doesn't matter how old you are imo!

If it is I think we should make a move, especially given that DJ may be out for some time.

And thanks.

Just some examples

Valid point Kareem, was thinking something similar myself. When we did have competition for places Fryatt and Howard were playing well enough to keep their places and scoring goals... coincidence?

True, we've been a bit unfortunate as far as injuries to Dickov and Campbell up front but there is no excuse for the lack of competition in central midfield. Pearson brought some decent players in but made a fatal error leaving us short in central midfield which is arguably the most important position.

Clemence is injured, quite badly if what Bert said is true and Kishishev seems to of vanished again so that leaves 3 you probably really need 4 or 5 to have true competition in such a vital area

we need dickov back but we have to get used to the fact that hes not going to be fit all season and as for dj i thought it was a great signing untill i realised hes a sick note and always will be. as for the mid well no wizo any more and there is only adams to cover the wings we need cover and half decent cover at this level

Correct, and Adams is more of a winger so practically down to the 2 we have playing.

yes but when Adams came on for the Welsh u21's the other night he played centrally at the point of a midfield diamond and looked impressive

I think Ric Flair mentioned a couple times that Adams scored most of his goals for Bury as a centre mid/attacking mid.

I must admit I've always been puzzled by this big suad Pearson's even saying it tonight's Merc. I just don't see it.

Well on paper, we do have a large squad. But that matters little as most of them won't even get a look in under Pearson. I'm guessing that might be what he means, "the deadwood".

Most of them are deadwood that we need to get rid of.

Cheltenham have been kind enough to take a couple of them off our hands.

The two strikers and the two midfielders have, I believe, started every league game together this season. They are far too comfortable and it's about time Pearson rung a few changes. King and Oakley have been carried by some of the others (Dyer and Fryatt when he was scoring), but now that the others are underperforming it's clear that neither Oakley nor King offer any creativity or energy in the centre of the park. I'd like to see Adams in centre midfield and Dickov replacing Fryatt. It's just a shame we don't have another big man up front, clearly Howard's place is guaranteed because Hayles just doesn't cut the mustard.

I quite like the sound of that. I was hinting at Adams playing in a more central position earlier in the season, and I think now might just be the time to put it into action. It's not a position that's alien to him, in fact one that has brought him success in the past with Bury.

As for dropping Fryatt, I like the idea, but I don't know whether we really have anybody better to replace him with? Whilst he's scoring goals (aside from his little dry patch), it's difficult to drop him. Neither DJ, Dickov or Hayles could perform consistently in my opinion.

I think Dickov's hunger and desire could almost carry him through (clutching at straws a bit lol), and tbh I believe in him more than Fryatt to take chances, no way would he have been to tame with that one-on-one.
