Phube Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 Sky News The teenager who shot dead schoolboy Rhys Jones has been left with a broken nose and other facial injuries after being attacked in jail.Sean Mercer Sean Mercer is serving life for killing 11-year-old Rhys Jones Sean Mercer, 18, was assaulted at HMP Moorland in Doncaster, South Yorkshire - but the incident was stopped by the "timely intervention" of staff, a Prison Service spokeswoman said. The gang member needed hospital treatment after the fight in a communal part of the jail. A Prison Service spokeswoman said: "We can confirm an incident took place at HMP Moorland at 2.30pm on Saturday, December 27, in which two prisoners assaulted each other." Rhys Jones Rhys was shot in the head The fight was over within two minutes when prison staff broke it up. Mercer, from Croxteth in Liverpool, was sentenced to life behind bars last month after being found guilty of killing 11-year-old Rhys. He was told he will serve at least 22 years for blasting three shots across the car park of the busy Fir Tree pub on a summer night last year. Mercer had apparently being targeting members of the rival Strand Gang - but one of the bullets hit Rhys, who was on his way home from football training. To be honest... I find it really hard to find any sympathy...

fox123 Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 The problem is he will only get segregated where he can't be harmed again. Whilst in segregation he will enjoy a luxury of Games Consoles, TV's and music, the prison system is an absolute joke. My friend is a Forensic Psychologist at Long Lartin, home to some of the most dangerous people in the country. He was telling me only a couple of days ago he was Psycho Analysing Joey Barton's brother who is in there for killing someone which was racially motivated. He currently has a contract on his head from certain inmates, but because of this, he is currently living the life of Riley in segregation because the current governor has allowed them the aforementioned luxurys.

If he makes it until the end of his sentence he'll be set up for life anyway! He's bound to have a new identity with all the trimmings.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I've no sympathy with Mercer but I do get a bit annoyed at how other prisoners take the law into their own hands. You're in prison for heaven's sake - you're not really in a great position for making moral judgements on other people. I'm also not that comfortable with this arbitrary notion that committing crimes against children is worse than committing crimes against adults, and it's just something that's used by criminals to make themselves feel better about their own wrongdoing - e.g. well I may have beaten someone half to death and destroyed their life completely, but at least they weren't a child - that would be REALLY bad. I'm probably alone on this one

stez Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 i presume the only person who could've done it is a council tax evader, so as to be able to claim the moral high ground

Thracian Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 Shame the prison staff broke it up. Can't understand em really. And can't understand us picking up the bill to house such shits either. Remote and deserted Antarctic island, one day's rations, pair of shorts and tea shirt, no right of return to UK and leave em to providence.
Darkzzz_ Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I personally think committing a crime against a child is a lot worse, but I don't agree with the way they use it in prison, it is often an excuse, like you say to make them feel a little better about their own wrong doings. In general though I don't want to even start talking about the prison system here, it is a disgrace how these animals are often protected and the luxury most of them seem to get is unbelievable. My mate is a prison guard and he talks about some of these inmates as if they are mates, watching TV and playing Xbox, what a life.
C-man Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 'Timely intervention' What a woeful phrase to use in the context.
