Guest Bilo Posted 27 April 2009 Posted 27 April 2009 But why is that? It's not like Barnsley, Plymouth, Crystal Palace, Wednesday, Watford, Ipswich etc. have (much) better squads, and they're not exactly used to winning/getting promoted either. I can't quite figure out why the top supported clubs are finding it THAT hard to compete in that league... It seems that they lose a lot of players too quickly, and those that stay are on Premiership wages. The teams that have been in the Premiership for a while will also have budgeted for the Premiership, meaning they lose money hand over fist when they drop down a level. Newcastle for example, have players on obscene amounts of money and the running costs for a 52,000 seater stadium will be massive in the Championship. After all, they're unlikely to get anywhere near capacity for Doncaster on a Tuesday night. The parachute payments help with this, but they only last so long and once they dry up it can cause severe financial problems. Southampton are perhaps the most dramatic example of this. That's why it's so vital to bounce back quickly, failure can mean at best a long stay in the Championship and at worst, financial meltdown.
Koke Posted 27 April 2009 Posted 27 April 2009 I feel sorry for them. I like Norwich as a club and its fans. I was hoping Plymouth would go down, but meh..
Helen Posted 27 April 2009 Posted 27 April 2009 Norwich will come straight back up I think. Southampton and Charlton i'm not too sure about. Charlton's decline has happened very quickly so something is obviously wrong down there. Then Southampton have their money troubles.
lcfc_jme Posted 27 April 2009 Posted 27 April 2009 As long as Southampton stay in business, I hope they just become has-beens and reside in League One on a permanent basis. If that happens, I don't give two shits who else goes down.

By now, Norwich and Soton don't have team full of Premier League failures though. They've had years to adapt and despite being so well-supported, they still struggle to compete against the likes of Barnsley, Plymouth, Doncaster, you name it, who have much tighter budgets. Charlton might've been forgiven for planning for the Premier League, but even they have usually come accross as rather prudent over the years, and Curbishley always said that avoiding relegation was the first and most important target of the season. The others were always flirting with relegation/doomed from the start, so I find it hard to believe that they were budgeting for the Premier League. Why and where does/did it all go wrong for these clubs?
AyewJoking Posted 28 April 2009 Posted 28 April 2009 Bloody hell, remember when Norwich finished 3rd in the prem!
MC Prussian Posted 28 April 2009 Posted 28 April 2009 Personally, I'd rather have Norwich stay up, but I guess I'm on my own here - most FT'ers fancy an away trip to Oakwell than Carrow Road. It's going to be a tough year in League One season 2009/2010, anyway.

It really is going to be a toughie down there. Charlton, Southampton and either Norwich or Barnsley down there for definite and if Leeds bottle the play-offs, it's going to look like a mini Prem from 10 years ago. Strangely though, it wouldn't be a surprise to see none of them come up. We've been the exception rather than the rule in League One, and I can see a few teams going well next season that are already in the division. Glad we got out at the first attempt because that will be one hard division next season.

What a tough League One next season, the teams going up must be licking their lips at the prospect of going to these former Premiership clubs and battering them...
MC Prussian Posted 28 April 2009 Posted 28 April 2009 This is what League One could look like next season: Relegated or almost there Barnsley/Norwich Southampton Charlton And two to three out of these five Millwall/MK Dons/Leeds United/Tranmere Rovers/Sc'unthorpe Then the old forces of Oldham Swindon Stockport Huddersfield Plus Brentford Wycombe/Exeter/Bury Gillingham/Rochdale/Dag&Red/Shrewsbury
Darkzzz_ Posted 28 April 2009 Posted 28 April 2009 Norwich are gone I think. I can't see the great escape happening. Unbelievable.

Basingstoke Fox Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 In League Two maybe Erm yeah I kind of said that without realising where they were in the league. Theyve gone downhill bigtime!
chrisfox Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 Norwich are gone I think. I can't see the great escape happening. Unbelievable. Last time Norwich needed a win to stay up (Premier league) I think they lost 6-1 to Fulham! can't see them staying up now!
lou Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 We can send Norwich down, how nice God please do.... I absolutely hate that journey!
Lamby Posted 29 April 2009 Posted 29 April 2009 God please do.... I absolutely hate that journey! We can hope If we win, we send them down If they draw with us, they go down Most likely result will be a draw imo
