But at the time... Dyer was still playing ok, Fryatt had back to back hat tricks, Howard hadn't scored but was playing brilliantly, Tunchev was awesome that day, Davies ran the midfield. And we still had room for a Swiss international, 2 Liverpool loanees, an Arsenal loanee and a Premier League veteran.

I just thought I'd direct you in the way of 00/01 Millwall side of Tim Cahill, Steven Reid, Neil Harris (pre-cancer), Tony Warner, Richard Sadlier, Paul Ifill, Steve Claridge, Lucas Neill, Marc Bircham.

Its not a bad team you got though, won't waltz through the Championship next season though like ours did.

Yes but is this at the time (like ours) or when each player was in their prime that you refer to? :)

Pretty much with the exception of Steve Claridge which goes without saying, although he still mustered 14 goals the next season for us. Paul Moody and Neill harris both hit over 20 goals that season in Division two with harris getting 28.

Lucas Neill shortly transfered to Blackburn 3 months later, while we managed to fight Blackburn off for Steven Reid until the end of the following season.

How we kept Cahill for so long is still a bit of a mystery as he outclassed everyone on the field.

Richard Sadlier was rumour to be going for £5million to a host of Premiership clubs but unfortunaetly had to retire through injury after just being called up to the Irish National side.

Most of them were the youngsters through our youth academy which has now been scraped due to the big clubs just taking anyone who shows any talent over the age of 16.

Neil Harris picked up cancer during the pre-season after promotion after 2 seasons of destroying clubs.

Marc Bircham the same was out for about a year due to injury.

Finished on 93 points in a very strong League One division with the likes of Reading, Stoke and Wigan pumping millions into their team and Rotherham just bobbing about somehow clinching second.

How we are 4th at the moment with our current squad is a mystery as the only team we've steam rolled is Leeds at home, if we go up (unlikely with our play-off record) then we'll be end up like Derby in the Premiership.

I see he listed a team though on the exact date, thought he may have just meant in general.

Can't really list an exact team as it was a while ago but all our players were ever present in the side and the midfield and strike force of Livermore, Cahill, Reid, Ifill, Harris and Moody alone would have been enough to smash that side to pieces.

Is that the team that waltzed into the premiership? I can't remember you going up with that team?

That was a pretty awesome team.

If Dion Dublin could put a ball into the net from 4 yards out then we would have done.

Richard Sadlier also picked up his injury in April, any team would miss a striker who hits 17 goals in 30 games, Claridge also went into the play-offs carrying an injury but trooped on through.

Steven Reid also picked up an injury, pretty much the story of his career ever since.

Fair points you make about that team.

If there's one thing that has annoyed me this season, it's been opposition fans judging our performance on that particular day against our league position - it's clear we've been better than everyone else from the league table but in addition to that, I've only missed a couple of games this season and most teams have made us look like Barcelona at some point during the game.

Right, that's the disclaimer, cos I know it's annoying but...

I'm glad you can't believe you're fourth, cos I can't believe it either. Maybe he's brilliant every other week but in both our games that Nadjim Abdou in your midfield has spent the entire game trying to hoof the ball out of play, it seemed to me. Whitbread looked good both times though and it's no surprise to see him linked with a seven-figure move. I thought Bolder was doing well to get on the ball and spread the play on Saturday. When he went off we were home and hosed. Not sure whether he was injured or unfit or something. Think Jackett has done miracles with that squad to have them fourth though and I'd be shocked if you didn't get a hammering in the play-offs from either Leeds or whoever doesn't go up from Posh and Dons. When one of the opposition's best players is out injured, it doesn't half show in this division, as I'm assuming Grabban has been important for you.

That team was bloody brilliant.

Their best player yesterday was James Henry, on loan from Reading. Pace, skill full and runs at defenders both inside and outside. The amount of times Mattock was left dead on his arse was laughable.

Agreed.

But surely any team with Josh Low and Elvis Hammond in the starting line can't be beaten?

I was surprised at how good he was. Saw him twice last year (once for Bournemouth against Northampton, once for Norwich against us) and he was ****ing terrible both times.

The amount of times Mattock gets completely schooled by average players is shocking though.

Yeah I thought he'd be dangerous for them and he prove me right. To be fair to Mattock, Henry didn't get much of a sniff after about 30 mins, especially in the second half.

No but they did get to the semi-finals of the play-offs. Decent side but then it went downhill.

Cahill's got to be one of the best players to have played at this level.

Steven Reid was still very young. Claridge was on the downhill slope - maybe comparable to Oakley in that sense. As for Tim Cahill - was he that good in this division? If he was then you'd suspect someone might have picked him up at the time - Mark Davies needed only 6/7 games at this level to earn a move to the prem. Harris was good, I'll give you that.

In that Leicester team is Alexander Tunchev. I rest my case.

He was 20 years old and still one of our best players.

Tim Cahill managed to notch up 10 goals from midfield that season, which okay is poor by his standards but his class still shone through at games, he did score 12 goals the season before from midfield. Mark Davies was unsettled at Wolves who are a team flying in the top of the Championship without him. To compare the two situations is clutching at straws, you could ask why hasn't Delph been picked up yet? when if reports from Leeds fans are to be believed has more potential than Davies. We didn't need to sell at a time of financial stability, an extremely good team spirit at the club with all the players grown up with each other for 4 years, playing at a youth team level, just promoted to the Championship there was no need for him to leave a club that had shown so much commitment to him.

I see you've ignored Tony Warner, Lucas Neill of whom I also mentioned :D.

We didn't sign Claridge until the end of the season around March time as two of our strikers picked up red cards, the other striker alongside Harris was Moody, who was a bit like your Howard. Good foil, good in the air, picked up 16 goals along the way.

Like I said, the standard of the league back then was way better than it is now, I haven't seen your Leicester side go to places like Leeds, Us, Peterborough, MK Dons and come away with 3-0, 4-0 victories like we did to Rotherham and Stoke just to name a few.

Our other two centrebacks were Sean Dyche and Stuart Nethercott at the time, not world beaters but certaintly leaders amongst a young squad who led the team well, also had a youngster Joe Doolan who we rated highly but had to retire through injury.

I ignored the others as I had things to do!

I don't know anything about Neill at that time, presumably he was useful (ahem Tunchev).

How is the standard better then than it is now?! Players who were previously 'Premier league quality' are packing the lower leagues due to the influx of foreigners and accordingly are strengthening the lower leagues. The date I referred to in the title saw us wallop Peterborough 4-0.

Furthermore, the point you make about Davies is absolutely outrageous. I've seen Delph play 3 or 4 times this season and he's (say it quietly) VASTLY OVERRATED. It's the Leeds United propaganda machine. Was Cahill being linked with any premiership sides back then? I doubt it.

Tony Warner is a solid Championship standard keeper, no better.

Mark Davies could have shat his pants before the game, turned up with a blindfold, and still been better than any player on the other team in any of the games he played in league one, I doubt Cahill could say that.

Good team, I'll give you that, but the best? We'll see whether we get more than 93 points this season.
