Babylon Posted 1 April 2009 Posted 1 April 2009 Bloody soap dodgers. It made me laugh that about every other person they interviewed yesterday was saying "we should bail out people, not banks". Completely oblivious to the fact more people would have been hurt from this had the banks been allowed to collapse. More people would have lost their life savings compared to the number who have lost their job/house in all of this.

If the FSA had some balls and Gordon Brown wasn't a complete tool then this mess could have been avoided. Look at Canada.

Yup... I bet they loved the Fred "the shred" affair. All the finger pointing and demonising made him the hate figure, rather than the incompetents who relaxed the rules to allow these things to happen.

Whilst I agree with what you're saying, you're overlooking a few areas that grate, although the banks are not helping themselves, namely: 1) There has never been a better time to be a retail or investment bank. They are earning higher margins than ever, such is the state of the markets. So taxpayers look at this as the pain being shared unevenly. Namely, they have bailed out the banks, who are now earning higher margins than ever. In the meantime, the benefit to the taxpayer is unlikely to be seen for many many years, and on the retail banking side, interest for savers is non-existent whilst in the future, it is likely a large proportion of us will have to pay to have bank accounts like on the continent. 2) If banks were any other company, they would have been allowed to go bust. Therefore, talk of why should FX traders, who have not caused the losses, should suffer a loss in bonus, seems academic, when were it not for taxpayer bailouts, they would be a creditor trying to fight for the spoils that were left after the adminstrators had stepped in. Same applies to the pensions and golden pay-offs to the executives at the likes of Northern Rock and RBS. Were they in any other industry and had run a business into insolvency, they would not have received large financial settlements and would instead be receiving a maximum of £28,000 from the Pension Protection Fund. Admittedly, no 2 is the fault of the government who should have taken a tougher line throughout negotiations when saving the banks. At every turn, its had its pants pulled down. It should have toyed with the idea of protecting depositors and negotiating with bondholders, so that the credible threat existed that bankers could lose accrued earnings as in any other industry. They haven't and the banks have used this leverage to secure what is a remarkably good deal for shareholders and bondholders at the expense of the taxpayer.

There was a group of about 50 protestors wearing hooddies and bandanas who looked up for a bit of trouble but everything else looks pretty chilled out. The worst thing I saw was the police trying to remove a bandana from some guy and Russel Brand giving a rubbish interview to a Sky News reporter. So far - tame.
