A quick search yielded this and this

Hmmmm. I am sure I went more than twice. Could be wrong, but dont think I am. And it was the London one, not Liverpool.

Stopped going when the police were waiting at the bus and train stations to send you back.

Might go home an listen to some Crass / Subhumans before I go out tonight. Those were the days.

Sorry mate but I disagree. You can't just say you dislike things your employer does and absolve yourself of all blame. You're working for them so you're contributing to their actions. If you have moral objections, find a different job, until that point you can't just shake off any responsibility being saying you don't necessarily agree with it.

I also don't think you're second point is true either. NGOs and protest groups spend all year running campaigns and releasing statements that rarely make it further than page 17 of the Guardian. These protesters are going to have their cause splashed all over newspapers and tv screens in almost every country in the world.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Until recently I worked for RBS, who have been victimised more than any of the other banks. I worked in their fixed income area during the years when they were heavily exposed to ABS deals. My job was to reconcile the trades that the front office did and make sure that the accounting details were recorded correctly. I had no say in the deals themselves and ultimately to me it was a load of numbers on the screen. If I hadn't worked there or even if I had stood against it I could not have made the slightest bit of difference to the business they were doing. I was a contractor and was paid as an external head.

My point about NGOs is if you have 50+ NGOs screaming their heads off outside the Excel Centre next Thursday and it is hijacked by anarchists the good natured NGOs will have their image tarnished. Not only that but there are so many voices to be heard that I feel they will end up crowding each other out. Even isolated incidents such as Greenpeace trying to board whaling ships doesn't exactly do their image a huge amount of credit.

The protests at the bank of England are an entirely different matter - more one of public outrage. The problem I have as highlighted in that FT letter is that blame is popular culture in the UK and I know full well that the so many people I know in the world of Banking are no different to people who work for any other large company.

Maybe I'm just a bit pissed off because it's all going to be happening outside my bedroom and office window.

The 1999 one was Liverpool St, as in Liverpool Street Station

don't necessarily agree with our institutions trading in oil

What's wrong with trading in oil?

Sorry - I meant funding oil developments. RBS is big in this. While I worked there the bank was targetted by a number of protests outside the front door.

I'm really quite furious about it all. Bankers have been completely demonised when most of us earn OK money but not the millions that the directors earn and don't necessarily agree with our institutions trading in oil or immoral companies. The protests will achieve nothing other than trouble and I think the real NGOs and groups out there will not get their voices heard.

In the city I do really fear that there will be some nasty stuff going on. I have a lot of friends who work down at RBS and I know they will be targetted. Also there are some pretty strong personalities in the city - most traders for a start. There are going to be some mighty interesting standoffs when the protesters stand in their way.

You have my sympathy.

A good many of the marxists and trades unionists who will be protesting in London were the very people who put this shitheap of a government in power and said yes, yes, yes to all the lies, hypocrisy, corruption and reckless irresponsibility that resulted.

So many of the protestors will be the very people who effectively voted for the awful waste and even more obscene borrowing levels which now threaten to drag the country to its knees and keep it there for decades. How much? Well, it will borrow another £351 billion pounds beore 2011 according to financial analysts, more than it did in the entire 306 years before Labour won power in 1997.

That government they voted for had every opportunity to guide and monitor the banks and to impose legislation if necessary to ensure that bank lending was responsible and based on firm criteria instead of irresponsible and always liable to backfire. They didn't do that.

There is criticism of poorly performing bankers' salaries and pensions but the government did nothing about such nonsense and even, as I understand it, agreed the pension of the RBS banker Sir Fred Goodwin in all its indecency.

Given that and the fact that the pension details were agreed with his employees first as well, it's my belief that the huge majority of the G20 protestors would have happily accepted such wonderful terms for their failure as businessmen too had they ever found themselves in that situation.

Everything about the record of Labour's politicians in power suggests that those dedicated socialists would have drawn as much cream from any cow as they could. And I seriously doubt that those who voted for them would be any different given the opportunity. So yet more brazen hypocrisy.

e) And will the Marxists, communists and loony lefties who have watched the Government they chose drag this country down so low that, by the end of this year it will not be able to employ 3million of its legal residents, aim their vitriol at those responsible - the very people it voted in?

We'll see but far more strident will be their attacks on targets that reflect their desire to wage class warfare. Ironic that. Because so many socialists cannot climb aboard the gravy train of wealth and privilege quickly enough when it stops at their station. Whether it be by way of salary hikes, expenses including second homes, privileged perks, protected pensions, jopbs for the family, backhanders for asking questions and who on earth knows what else.

I don't think these protests ever achieve anything. Smashin up towns and fighting police just makes more enemies for the protestors.

The only way to get government to do what we want is financial protest i.e people (on a mass scale) stop buying tobacco, alcohol and fuel for a while. The government make hundreds of millions, maybe billions, in tax on these things every week and I think that is the only way you can hurt them and make them listen.

If you work out how much tax they take from these 3 things in a week you will be astonished. I did it a few years back (an under estimate) and was shocked.

Yes but people are, generally, idiots.

Most of the people that show up these rallies are student posers who think they're oh-so-bad ass because they went on a march, abused a few innocent workers and waved a few banners in their El Che t-shirts and 'gangsta' bandanas.

Question - should I get some contents insurance before the protests?

[Churchill voice] Oooooh YESSSSS ! [/Churchill voice]

Another reason why the government should legailise the herb and introduce dutch style coffee shops. Imagine how much tax they would raise.

I've actually been saying that for years (as I'm sure countless others have.)

You'd effectively be creating an entire industry - not only something to tax but something that would create thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of jobs. Something that's, frankly, far more potent a fact now than it has been previously.

Also it means people will be smoking strains that you know are grown in a proper environment and is not contaminated with some shit that will put holes in your lungs. Unfortunately it will never happen as the government do not have the balls in fear of losing the vote but in reality every stoner in britain would vote for them if they weren't to stoned to do so lol

I'm living in the real world pal.

Left, right or centre, Trades Unions remain the lifeblood of the Labour Party and together provide much of the impetus for the G20 protest. In many ways they are protesting against their own idealistic but misguided viewpoint.

If the Labour government were a registered parent their "kids" would be taken away from them on the grounds that they were unwilling or incapable of caring for them properly or of providing enough of them with the incentive, education and life skills they need to support themselves.

I know mate, I didn't say anything about Trade Unions. You were harping on about Marxists. Being in a Trade Union doesn't make you a bloody communist.

Uhmm.. dude if you're not a Thatcherite you're commie, traitor filth. Didn't you know?

These demonstration are rallying points for all kinds of scum who usually us them as an excuse for mindless violence and vandalism.

I was watching a report from previous demonstrations and some bloke smashed in the windows of a very average looking Renault Clio that was parked up.

Yeah! That'll show the capitalist pigs!

(Now, if it was a Mercedes 500SL or such (whilst I still wouldn't condone such action) at least it would have had a point.)

I suppose you're saying all the Arthur Scargill's, Red Robbo's and Derek Hattons have disappeared....the things you can convince yourself of.
