Injury-hit England call up Bent

Darren Bent

Bent won the last of his four caps in November in the win over Germany

England have called up Tottenham striker Darren Bent to replace the injured Carlton Cole for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.

Cole, Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch all limped off during England's 4-0 friendly rout of Slovakia, leaving Fabio Capello short of forward options.

Capello had already ruled out drafting Michael Owen into the squad.

"Owen played 20 minutes in his last game, it is not enough and it would not be Kevin Davies either," said Capello.

Crouch is likely to be fit for the game against Ukraine but Cole is definitely out with a thigh problem while Heskey requires a scan on a calf injury.

England could deploy Wayne Rooney as a lone striker against Ukraine at Wembley and ask Steven Gerrard to play a supporting role, but Capello is not revealing his thinking just yet.

"At the moment we don't know," said the Italian, who said Rio Ferdinand should be available for Wednesday's game.

The defender missed the win over Slovakia because of a groin injury but scans have revealed no major damage.

Meanwhile, Capello said he was delighted with the performance of Rooney, who scored twice against the Slovaks.

After joking that the Manchester United striker was "crazy" prior to the Slovakia game, the England coach remarked: "I hope he will always be crazy like this evening.

"I am very happy for him, he played very well, scored two goals and is a very important player for us.

"His movement with Gerrard was very good, both when we were attacking and defending and I was delighted.

"Rooney can play anywhere. If our team were a pack of cards, he would be our joker."

surprised Heskey hasn't been replaced as well, 4 days is a short time for a hamstring injury to recover, personally I'd of sent Emile back to Villa and called up Kevin Davies in place of Heskey and Michael Owen in place of Cole

yes, he does the same think for Bolton Heskey does, hold the ball up and brings other players into the game

Kevin Davies would do the exact same job as Heskey, do you think Emile playing is cringeworthy?

Heskey is 5 times the player Kevin Davies is.

going a bit far but Davies is certainly playing well enough to get called up, especially if Carlton Cole is good enough

Can't fault Kevin Davies's goal scoring record this season, isn't he the highest scoring English player in the Premier League? If so, deserves a go!

As so often in recent times, Owen is unfit.. :(

And giving a player an international debut in an important qualifying game is the type of nonsensical act that McClaren would come up with. Capello knows a lot better.

yes but Owen is a proven goal scorer at international level, Agbonlahor isn't scoring for Villa and Bent is just plain awful, as for Davies I'd have him on the bench and start Crouch (providing he's fit) even if he were to play, unlike Carson he's a very experience player and is unlikely to be fazed by the prospect of playing for England

Owen is nowhere near match fit and I can imagine Capello has a small bit of respect for Newcastle, meaning they might want to work on him keeping fit for their run-in.

he played Heskey when he wasn't fit against Spain, I don't think Capello gives a damn about the club sides, which is refreshing

Slighty different situation, but whatever.

Owen hasn't played proper football in ages and I think Rooney will cope fine, don't think Bent will start.

Kevin Davies has scored more leagues goals than any other English strikers this season in the premiership.

He's ace at bullying defenders too, can't see why he's not been called up, but that's why I'm not a football manager.

Not really a long term solution really though? But I suppose considering the situation you could do worse. See if Big Stevie had played Saturday and impressed he may have got a call up!

Shame he's capped for Scotland
