Head Honcho Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Well Stephen Ireland is an attacking midfield player and I think Kompany's best position is at centre back. De Jong and Barry sounds like a decent standard defensive midfield partnership. I wouldn't be surprised to see Liverpool sign Ireland.
dandannieldanok Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 I wouldn't be surprised to see Liverpool sign Ireland. Hope they don't, would hate to see him get stuck in their rotation policy.
Simi Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 They'll get someone in who won't have transfer rumours hanging over him and will be totally focused on helping Villa.Barry had a good season, but there was always a feeling he would go. Villa's squad is small enough as it is, they could have done without this. Sidwell and Reo Coker left now, hardly a midfield that is going to break into the top four. They're going to need to spend very big to acheive what they have this season.
Head Honcho Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Hope they don't, would hate to see him get stuck in their rotation policy. His nine bookings last season suggests he'll miss a few games anyway!
StanSP Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Surprised by this. Thought Man City would go for someone who would cost them more and basically go for a better player
lildave3 Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 I thought Man City would at least go for some exciting players, not the likes of Gareth Barry. <_< Sort of player that will help them finish 5th. dandannieldanok Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Sort of player that will help them finish 5th. Exactly, it doesn't match the ambitions of the club.
lildave3 Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Exactly, it doesn't match the ambitions of the club. Why doesn't it? Who else are they going to sign that is not only as good as Barry, but has as much experience in the English game as him.
Simi Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Has Petrov left? Alright smart arse! How old is he now anyway? Can't see him sticking around for a few years to mount a big shot at the top four!
dandannieldanok Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Why doesn't it?Who else are they going to sign that is not only as good as Barry, but has as much experience in the English game as him. Because they want to win everything, they want Champions League, it may be unrealistic but that's their ambition. It's down to personal opinion but I don't rate Barry. He may have Premier League experience but imo there are numerous better midfielders with a longer future at the top level out there for City to try and get. They bought De Jong who is one of them for a start.
maddog Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Barry plays a lot better for England than Fat Frank and Gerrard. Part of the Villa side that have finished very high over the past few seasons can't call him overrated. Wayne Rooney and Joe Mattock are the 2 most overrated English players.
lildave3 Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Alright smart arse! How old is he now anyway? Can't see him sticking around for a few years to mount a big shot at the top four! About 30 I think. Didn't he get Player of the Season at Villa? Or did I dream that. Can't remember. Anyway, they do still need someone in.

I don't know mate, can't say I pay to much attention to other clubs awards! Either way he's not exactly the player that Villa are going to be looking for to steamroll their way up the table. I'm sure you wouldn't argue that they're well short on numbers and challenging up the top end of the table is something you cannot do without a bigger squad and with O'Neill not seeming to like going for it in the market I think they'll struggle. We'll see though.

Joe. Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Barry's a solid player, rarely puts a foot wrong and is fairly effective. I think it's a good signing, although the £12m price-tag seems a bit steep to me. He'll do a decent job for Man City alongside Ireland anc co. in my opinion. He's no doubt gone for the money, and the hope that there'll be some serious quality players coming to join him.
Uncle Albert Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 From saying he will only leave Villa for Champions League football he has now gone to a team who arent even in the Europa League?
Tevez Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Will be playing football consistently in what is the World Cup season of selection? Capello rates him.
Uncle Albert Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Will be playing football consistently in what is the World Cup season of selection? Capello rates him. And he would of at Villa.. and also in Europe.

Guest Bilo Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Nothing or nobody will convince me this move would be for anything other than the oil-funded pay packet Barry would receive at Eastlands. No European football next season, no chance of competing for the top four as Villa threatened to do for long periods and the only silverware I'd give them a hope of winning next season would be the Carling Cup. A backward step in football terms but a huge payrise. Obviously Barry values the latter more highly if this is true and that's a shame after so many years at Villa.
Uncle Albert Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Hopefully his England career takes a step backwards aswell.
Joe. Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Man City will finish above Villa next season. I was going to say, is it really a step back in footballing terms? Villa won't do as well next season I don't think, and Man City with all their money should be able to mount a serious charge at making 5th or 6th place you'd have thought.

The main problem I see with this signing is how to fit Barry in alongside Kompany and Ireland. Think it's safe to say that Ireland is the first choice in central midfield and Kompany has done very well in his role, especially in the back end of the season. Throw De Jong into the mix and it's going to be tough competition for places.
