Bert Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Will be playing football consistently in what is the World Cup season of selection? Capello rates him. He would've been at Villa too. But, he'd have been in the Europa League as well, whereas at City, he won't. Less chance of exhaustion before the World Cup, mind.
RowlattsFox Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 I'd go along with this. The main problem I see with this signing is how to fit Barry in alongside Kompany and Ireland. Think it's safe to say that Ireland is the first choice in central midfield and Kompany has done very well in his role, especially in the back end of the season. Throw De Jong into the mix and it's going to be tough competition for places. My guess would be Kompany going back to centre back, Barry alongside De Jong, with Ireland playing behind the frontman. You have to say, player wise, a first choice man City eleven is looking very strong.

It's all well and good having these players but if they don't gel then Hughes is a dead man walking - if they start badly then he's gone after five games.
Granno Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 It's all well and good having these players but if they don't gel then Hughes is a dead man walking - if they start badly then he's gone after five games. Then Hiddink slips into the fold after he knows his Russia future?
MarkDeVries Posted 2 June 2009 Posted 2 June 2009 Man City will finish above Villa next season. This Besides that, money, money and more money.

Yep. You can be the richest club in the division but if you don't have stability, you're going nowhere. Man City will be to the Premiership what QPR have been to the Championship.
BoneDog Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 Nothing or nobody will convince me this move would be for anything other than the oil-funded pay packet Barry would receive at Eastlands. No European football next season, no chance of competing for the top four as Villa threatened to do for long periods and the only silverware I'd give them a hope of winning next season would be the Carling Cup. A backward step in football terms but a huge payrise. Obviously Barry values the latter more highly if this is true and that's a shame after so many years at Villa. Exactly. I cannot believe he has left Villa for Man City. Liverpool I could understand. No doubt it's a money thing. Footballers are so greedy now (mostly). Villa were offering him about £80,000 a week and that's not enough, it's shocking. Sideways move at best but I think backwards. I hope Villa do better than Man City next season (mainly cos of the O'Neill love) but Barry will be a hard player to replace so they could struggle, but we all know how Martin gets the best out of players so hopefully they do well again. He is as good as Gerrard and Lampard in my opinion and he was my favourite English midfielder in the last few years. EDIT : Villa also losing Martin Laursen will do them no favours. They have now lost both of their strongest players (Young and Agbongwhateverhisnameis maybe equal in quality but for very different reasons). I have faith in Martin to pull something out of the bag though and keep them competing at the very top.

You have to say, player wise, a first choice man City eleven is looking very strong. Is it? They are a bit lightweight and have no out and out strikers of note. Defensively frail and over-rated (Richards has been dire and Dunne is slow and has been error-prone). We'll see what happens there. Hughes needs to buy a couple of defenders and 2 decent strikers. See who the money will bring in but not convinced that they will be anything other than competing for Europa Cup spot next season. And what other people are saying about Villa, watch what God O'Neill will do there. Randy Lerner isn't exacty broke and will fund him. Villa will finish at least 5th next season....

Simi Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 Providing he stays fit, they have Bellamy. Which is almost 100% never going to happen, big problem for Man City. At times last season they just needed someone with a bit of strength up front who was going to hold the ball up and bring the others in to play. Caicedo looks like he might end up doing a job, but he's got a long way to go yet.
Samilktray Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 Who here would turn down a 90k a week contract for five years? Bearing in mind hes no spring chicken. Man City have more of a chance of breaking the top 4 anyway, Villa had there chance this season and blew it.

Why not take a step sideways (which could become a step forward) for double the money. It is not as if he is a Villa fan. at the person who said he is as good as Lampard or Gerrard.
Jon the Hat Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 Great move for him. Pot loads of cash, a long deal and football every week. Beats Liverpool hands down.
syston_fox Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 Providing he stays fit, they have Bellamy. They may also have a fully fit Bojinov by the start of the season for the first time in two years.
Corky Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 They may also have a fully fit Bojinov by the start of the season for the first time in two years. And possibly Jo too.
Ultra Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 Barry was one of the Villa players most affected through burnout this season, after a protracted European campaign. With Man City out of Europe, he won't have this problem next season, which means he'll be relatively fresh for next summer's World Cup.

I don 't know their first team is shaping up nicely. Given Richards Kompany Dunne Bridge De Jong Barry IrelandWright-Phillips Robinho Jo/Bojinov/Bellamy/Caicedo That still leaves Petrov, Elano, Johnson, Zabaleta, Fernandes, Sturridge all in the squad. The only thing that will stop Man City having a bad season is indiscipline, lack of professionalism, or poor organisation. Basically, it's up to them not to self-implode with the likes of Elano or Robinho having a strop, or for the likes of Richards to overcome the accusations that he's lost focus and had his head swayed by the fame and money. I think Barry made the right decision.
Maybes Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 Great move for him. Pot loads of cash, a long deal and football every week. Beats Liverpool hands down. Exactly right. Cracking move for Barry. Like others have said Man City need a good hold up striker.
Tommeh Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 City havn't 1 out and out striker I'd not rate as gash. If they signed someone like Aguero I could see them breaking the top 4 for sure.

I think Barry made the right decision. That's exactly the same team as this season with the addition of Barry. Barry is not going to cure all Man City's ills and suddenly make them top 4 challengers. With that squad right there they'll do no better than this season's mediocrity.
TrickyTrev Posted 3 June 2009 Posted 3 June 2009 I doubt Richard Dunne will be a starter for City next year, Kompany and Onuha are both far better options but I wouldn't be surpised to see them go in for another centre back. You can also be pretty certain that they are going to bring in another striker, Sturridge is out of contract. Although they were a long way off points wise this season you get the sense that they are not far away. There home record was as good as those in the top 4 and it was certainly a transitionary season with so many players coming in and out. I think this year they will just gor for two or three players of real quality, they already have the nucleaus of a good squad, just got to find a bit of consitency.

It's amazing the difference one player can make. In signing Barry, Kompany can move into the heart of defence, strengthening their defence and midfield. Barry is a better midfielder than Kompany, so that area of the team gets improved. Kompany is a better defender than Onuoha so that area of the team gets improved. Whilst I think it is too early for them to challenge for top 4, as they do need a more focal striker, they should easily be in amongst Spurs, Villa and Everton, battling for fifth place.
