Setanta - the end?

It's nothing like Tesco V Asda though, they might be selling the same product, football but they're offerinf different games so they are not or never will be truly competitive.

What we need is for these broadcasters to be paying less each for the same package, then the customer would have a genuine choice based on who provides the best package of cost, presentation, reliability etc.

No of course it's a totally different thing. But say Sky and someone else had three packages each from the PL (there are 6 available) prices would plummet due to the competition. Competition with Sky can only be a good thing in the long run, in the shirt term, you have to fork out for two subscriptions if you want to see all games. Positives and negatives I suppose.

Like Sky Box Office, If I want to watch a Hatton fight or Khan fight I can buy it, expensive at 15 quid but if I wanted to watch a Calzaghe fight I would need to buy a subscription for Setanta which when I looked into buying 1 month (because it was something like 12 quid I think?) you had to have a mimimum subscription of 3 months.

Another way to look at it however is that if you wanted to watch all Premiership matches on Prem Plus every month, you'd pay £7 a match, so roughly £28 a month. With Setanta you were paying £15 a month for all the football and a whole lot more sport besides.

I think it was something like £50 for the season, not sure on that, if you bought the 'season ticket' for PremPlus it certainly worked out alot cheaper that £7 a game.

Not quite. With 2 rival broadcasters competing for the rights then the price of the rights goes up.

But prices wouldn't plummet - did Sky's prices drop when Sentanta came in - No!. Because they are showing different games, all it means is you end up paying 3 subscriptions which each inflated because you are forced to buy additional packages that you don't want.

But the chances of you wanting to watch all of them is unlikely so you wouldn't pay the £28 you can be selective. As for Sentanta's other sports, like Sky what if you're not interested?

erm.... helllooooo.... slight bit of breaking news here everyone seems to of missed lollol

Not really, it's not exactly a surprise and the discussion taking place will be just as relevant to ESPN as it was to Sentanta.

Because they were no where near competitive enough. They had last two picks of PL games, 2nd and 3rd picks of FA Cup games and some England games. Say Setanta grew and got hold of some better rights, e.g another PL package, some Champions League games for example then Sky would have a genuine competitor, there'd be a decent alternative to Sky and the consumer probably would end up getting a better deal.

Yes I agree, you may not be interested, some people who didn't want every Prem Plus match and were interested in other sports were getting a better deal through Setanta.

Yeah we're having a nice little discussion leave us alone :P

F.A. Statement

The FA has made the following statement regarding Setanta:

Further to the announcement that Setanta has today gone into administration, FA Chief Executive Ian Watmore said:

"Obviously it's very disappointing that Setanta has gone into administration, and we have every sympathy for all the staff, customers and football supporters affected.

"Unfortunately, while The FA was able to agree on a way forward with Setanta, this has not been possible, due to the problems they encountered in other areas of their business.

"The FA will now consider options to find the best platform to broadcast those fixtures contracted to Setanta. These include England home friendly matches, FA Cup ties, England U21 games and the FA Community Shield.

"We remain confident in the strength of these fixtures and expect significant interest from broadcasters wanting to pay for the rights to partner The FA and the England teams."

I suspect these matches will end up on ESPN too.

Even then, ESPN will have to come up with a lot more to entice former Setanta subscribers.

I've just switched Setanta on ,on the off chance and it's now showing ESPN America.

Setanta was 'meh' anyway. But it did have UFC so I'm divided.

Feel sorry for whoever lost their jobs, but that's the harsh reality of trying to compete with Monopoly Man in a recession.

Is the golf that has mysteriously appeared on Eurosport this evening, the golf that is meant to be on setanta at the moment??
