Setanta - the end?

So those 46 matches will go to auction and be sold to the highest bidder i.e Sky

Unless there is some reason why they can't get them due to being unable to monopolise all of the matches

Please tell me there's a chance the BBC (or even ITV!) could win the rights to show these games....

Sky can't have them, they'll probably go to Virgin for a knock down price.

The Disney-owned sports network ESPN failed to win the rights for English matches in the latest auction earlier this year and is likely to bid again, although analysts believe they will offer a much lower price.

Sky can have one batch of 23 games (which they'll have anyway for the season after next), but not the other.

The sooner Shitanta disappears the better, twas a mickey mouse outfit, the only thing they did decent was chucking in a few big boxing matches without you having to pay PPV on top!

Hopefully the BBC will pick up the rights to the England games again, twas a disaster for the FA to sell the rights to them in the first place i.e only 1.3m people with access to the away games :@

Not to bothered bout the premier league deal, get enough games from Sky to satisfy my fix :D

Go for it BBC!

Hell, I'd even take ITV if they told Pleat where to get off. And Townsend. And Tyldesley.

All ITV pundits are pisspoor, apart perhaps from Robbie Earle.

All of the above

ITV, let us remember, mistakenly turned off a game, deep into extra time, to show adverts, making their audience miss the goal.

Indeed - it was the Everton-Liverpool game last season.

That should have been enough for the FA to cancel the contract with them.

ESPN has bought the rights to show 46 games in next season's English Premier League that were to have been shown by struggling broadcaster Setanta.

Disney-owned ESPN has won the two packages of games shown on Saturday teatimes and Monday evenings. It says both will be sold through BSkyB.

It has also won the 23 games per season Setanta was due to show from 2010-13.

The league took the broadcasting rights back from Setanta on Friday after it missed a payment deadline.

The Premier League had set a deadline of Monday for other broadcasters to submit offers for the games.

ESPN said in a statement it had "reached an agreement for its coverage to be retailed by Sky to residential and commercial customers".

Meanwhile, the Scottish Premier League (SPL) has taken back its UK rights for 2009/10 "and beyond" from Setanta after the Irish broadcaster missed a £3m payment.

The SPL said it was now "actively engaging in the process of selling our domestic broadcasting rights".

'British commitment'

It is the first time that ESPN will broadcast live Premier League football in the UK.

The broadcaster already has two channels in the UK, one covering American sports and another showing archived action.

Russell Wolff, managing director of ESPN International, said: "This move demonstrates our commitment to British sports fans and our ongoing commitment to delivering football to fans around the world across a variety of media."

"ESPN have a formidable worldwide reputation and experience in sports and I am sure we will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship with them," said Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore.

"I would like to thank ESPN, as well as all the other broadcasters who submitted bids, for their professionalism and effort in engaging in our sales process at such short notice."

WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU

ESPN's matches will be available on BSkyB - You will pay an extra amount for the ESPN matches

Games likely to be on a new branded ESPN channel - separate from the existing ESPN Classic and ESPN America

ESPN want it on other platforms other than BSkyB, though BT Vision and Virgin Media are yet to comment

Hmmm, I was going to ask the question that I have Sky but would I be able to watch these extra games now, seems like the answer is no unless I pay more so no change really.

I have access to ESPN Classic so was hoping I might get the extra games.

I have Setanta until October because I signed up for 6 months free. Does anyone know if ESPN will show the games on digital terrestrial?

It's highly likely that ESPN will now invest furthur in an English sports channnel. If they can replicate their American channels then we'll be in for a treat, they are very good.

However it's a shame for Setanta, they were good with their coverage. A good bunch of pundits (with the exception of Craig Burley) a great presenter in Angus Scott and a brilliant commentator in Jon Champion. They provided some good coverage.

And as for people complaining about Setanta buying the rights in the first place? If a competetive rival for Sky Sports had come around 10 years ago watching football on Digital TV would be a lot cheaper. It's like the Tesco V Asda thing. Their prices get lower becasue they are in competition with each other.

And as for who will win the England rights (if Setanta lose it) it's highly unlikely that the BBC will win it back. Their sport budget is being taken up by Formula 1. If F1 breaks up and the BBC get out of the contract, then they'll have money to spend. It's highly likely the rights will go to ESPN, and I hope they do. Sky needs a competitor if prices are ever going to go down, and if we're ever going to get rid of Richard Key's smugness.

The only way any football should be on the BBC is if it is free due to legislation requiring it to be shown free on TV. License payers money into the pockets of the FA or football clubs? No thanks.

so you'd rather ITV's coverage over MOTD or their excuse of a program "covering" the football League in place of what the BBC will serve up?

DavieG I know you mentioned this would be branded under a new espn channel.... however do you not think that this may just see sky return the PremPlus format..... I thought PremPlus was a fantastic system, ten times that of setanta.

It's nothing like Tesco V Asda though, they might be selling the same product, football but they're offerinf different games so they are not or never will be truly competitive.

What we need is for these broadcasters to be paying less each for the same package, then the customer would have a genuine choice based on who provides the best package of cost, presentation, reliability etc.

Sky will not be marketing them as such, they will be packaged by ESPN but delivered, initially though Sky. It's possible that they will also end up available through Virgin I would have thought.

I always thought the idea of PremPlus was good, I certainly had no problems with it, and it was good because I wouldn't have bought Season Ticket (Buy the contract for every game) but although it probably was abit expensive at 7 quid (?) you could buy the odd game here and there if you wanted - I think I only bought 1 match - Arsenal v Leicester. But atleast unlike Setanta you did have the option of buying a game.

Like Sky Box Office, If I want to watch a Hatton fight or Khan fight I can buy it, expensive at 15 quid but if I wanted to watch a Calzaghe fight I would need to buy a subscription for Setanta which when I looked into buying 1 month (because it was something like 12 quid I think?) you had to have a mimimum subscription of 3 months.
