Sir Fynwy Posted 8 June 2009 Posted 8 June 2009 I just wish people would stop paying for Setanta and Sky I have . Setanta were trying to build their subscriber base by challenging the sky monopoly but it looks like sky's got so many people hooked that they can't compete. As i said earlier if the single premiership package that sky can't have because of the monopoly regulations ends up free to air this may start to break the stranglehold they have on sport in the uk but I think old beardy branston will be all over this with some virgin pay to be fooked service.
Samilktray Posted 8 June 2009 Posted 8 June 2009 Setanta is pretty good. Baffles me when people moan about it, when Sky do pretty much the same thing as them though.
davieG Posted 8 June 2009 Posted 8 June 2009 If I want Digital TV I'm stuck with Sky, Freeview doesn't work, Virgin don't do digital in my post code area. The only alternative is Freestat but as I get my Broadband for a £5 with the basic Sky package that's what I've settled for.
Ford Super Sunday Posted 8 June 2009 Posted 8 June 2009 I have Setanta I don't see why people slate it, I reckon people are just annoyed at their poor custimer service, which is a pile of shite. However, they present football like any other broadcaster. They have treated the SPL and the Blue Square Premier with more respect than Sky ever could and would (granted, these aren;t great leagues) As for them collapsing, it is likely they will be bought out by ESPN, however, there could be major problems. The SPL might look to resell its contract, currently, it is soon to start a 5 year, £125m deal, which is a wild overpayment. They would be lucky to get £25m for 5 years if they tried to renegotiate. The Blue Square could be in real trouble. They would have to go cap in hand to the BBC, ITV or Sky, accept the biggest they could get (what, £2-3m a season, and be treated like crap then on. Things like the Guinness Premiership, which was set to move to Setanta, in a joint contract with sky, would have to renegotiate, on a wildly smaller contract than they agreed. Basically, it's not looking good. I like Setanta, obviously everyone has their preference, and of course you're entitled to dislike them (personally, when I had Sky Sports for a month, I couldnt stand Jamie Redknapp) shades of ITV Digital, just, not as disasterous
MC Prussian Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 Setanta 'is on brink of collapse' Setanta faces administration "within days" unless backers provide more funds to pay £30m it owes to the English Premier League, reports suggest. The broadcaster has already failed to pay the Scottish Premier League £3m it owes in television rights money. Setanta, which also shows cricket, golf and rugby union, has about 1.2 million subscribers, but is losing up to £100m a year, analysts say. Deloitte is set to step in to run the firm if it goes into administration. 'Weaker' matches The rights to show the English Premier League - and the subscribers that this pulls in - lie at the heart of Setanta's business model. But the firm had only about 60% of the subscribers it needed to break even, said Professor Chris Brady of the BPP Business School. "They have predicated the whole thing on getting those subscribers. The problem is they are taking on Goliath in BSkyB," he told the BBC. Not only did Setanta have only a small percentage of televised Premier League games, but they tended to be "weaker" matches, he added. There had also been problems with customer service, Professor Brady told the BBC. Falling values? Setanta's viability was cast into doubt earlier this year when it lost the rights to show 46 live Premier League matches from 2010/2011. In future it will show only 23 games per season, compared with BSkyB's 115, with industry observers saying that thousands of customers would give up their subscriptions. It is expected that a rival broadcaster - perhaps ESPN - would buy up its Premier League football rights. But the worsening economy has led observers to suggest that the rights to 46 games which Setanta holds for next season, the final year of its current contract, would not be worth as much as they had been. There are also doubts about whether the Premier League could match the £159m Setanta paid for the right to screen 23 Premier League games each season from 2010-11. A shared deal with ITV saw them secure rights for England and FA Cup matches for £425m - and it is likely another firm would buy up these rights. Thracian Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 I just wish people would stop paying for Setanta and Sky I've done the same as Sir Fynwy and for the same reasons. I've no regrets. Shrenchel Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 I just wish people would stop paying for Setanta and Sky Yep. There's websites on the interbob where you can subscribe for like 4 quid a month and get perfect streams everytime. Seems fooking stupid to spunk 30 quid a month or whatever on it.
Fosse Boy Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 I just wish people would stop paying for Setanta and Sky This. Though I'm definitely going to miss my Gaelic Football fix on Setanta Sports 2.
lildave3 Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 I just wish people would stop paying for Setanta and Sky I don't. I actually enjoy having things to watch.
dandannieldanok Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 Setanta is pretty good.Baffles me when people moan about it, when Sky do pretty much the same thing as them though. Yes. It's extremely hypocritical when people moan about Setanta, but then will happily sit down and park themselves in front of endless hours of Sky, who have slowly been drawing the real fans out of the game with the aid of the Premier League. Would find it absolutely hilarious if Sky were to ever go out of business.
Sparky Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 I don't.I actually enjoy having things to watch. Me too , id struggle like fook without my sky sports package
Shrenchel Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 Me too , id struggle like fook without my sky sports package http://www.free-football.tv/ or http://www.sportstreamz.com and cable to plug your laptop into your telly.
Sparky Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 http://www.free-football.tv/ or http://www.sportstreamz.com and cable to plug your laptop into your telly. Dont own a laptop , more than happy with my package. If people stop paying for sky i say good luck to them , but im a fan of several sports and i find skys coverage of football , cricket and Rugby Union head and shoulders above the rest and certainly wont cut off my nose to spite my face.
Tommeh Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 The only thing I watch at home on Sky Sports is the darts. If a game is really worth watching I'll hit the pub. Won't miss it in the slightest when I go uni.

Seems fooking stupid to spunk 30 quid a month or whatever on it. Doesn't cost that if you have Virgin. All in phone, internet and TV - the works for less than £90 a month. My missus used to spend that on calls to her sister alone.
Webbo Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 It was in the papers last week that they might be bought out by ESPN owed by Disney or Sky.
Matt Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 Was round someone's house earlier and they had the radio on, i'm sure they said something about Setanta not taking new customers on, surely the start (Well seems like it started a few days ago but you know what I mean) of the end for Setanta? If they can't afford the contracts they have and are not taking new customers on how will they be making their money now to afford the contracts?
demon_dog Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 I also heard it announced that Setanta will not be taking any more customers. As you say, with this being the case then they cannot raise any revenue, as such they are stuffed. Heard today that the deal negotiated with the Premiership was all in the prems favour. They demanded and got a huge chunk of the money paid up front. Any remaining payment is basically easy enough to recoup even if they have to put Setanta games out to tender. Unlike the Scottish league who weren't smart enough to demand up front payment. If only the league had demanded money up front with ITV digital, it was the lack of this money that sent us into administration. It's clear that the football league learned from this.
Edmund Posted 9 June 2009 Posted 9 June 2009 http://www.free-football.tv/ or http://www.sportstreamz.com and cable to plug your laptop into your telly. The quality is shite though on anything above 32". And don't tell me its the same. Dont own a laptop , more than happy with my package. If people stop paying for sky i say good luck to them , but im a fan of several sports and i find skys coverage of football , cricket and Rugby Union head and shoulders above the rest and certainly wont cut off my nose to spite my face. Spot on.
Matt Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 Apparently the Premiership has terminated their contract with Setanta.
Salieri Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 Message to subscribers from their website : http://www.setanta.com/global/gb.html Desperately trying to cling on to subscribers but I for one will be cancelling mine.
Salieri Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 So those 46 matches will go to auction and be sold to the highest bidder i.e Sky Unless there is some reason why they can't get them due to being unable to monopolise all of the matches Please tell me there's a chance the BBC (or even ITV!) could win the rights to show these games....
