More Premier Loans on their way?

Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric says the club will again turn to the loan market and bring in young Premier League players on season-long deals.

Liverpool pair Jack Hobbs and David Martin, along with Arsenal's Kerrea Gilbert, bolstered City's League One title push last season.

Mandaric said: "We can have five loan players and it is a tremendous opportunity for us to take advantage of the system.

"We are working on a few things, including one from last year."

Mandaric would not be drawn on identifying the player, but City have remained keen on Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, who made 15 appearances before dislocating his shoulder in a 1-1 draw with Colchester at the Walkers Stadium on March 21.

And head of recruitment Steve Walsh admitted at the end of last season that Cleverley "may well get some more time" at City, but said that United will dictate the future of the 19 year-old midfielder.

City also struck a short-term deal with Wolves' Mark Davies during last season's campaign.

Hobbs has since signed a four-year deal at City, and Mandaric added: "We have a good chance of bringing in top, young Premier League players on one-year loans, and while we are now looking at bringing in permanent players, we also have a list of potential loan signings."

The City chairman believes manager Nigel Pearson's standing in the game gives him a head-start in attracting up-and-comers from top-flight clubs.

Pearson had a spell as coach of the England Under-21s and Mandaric said: "He is respected by other managers for his abilities, and the fitness and training programmes here at Leicester are also held in high regard."

Mandaric says it is important to get the right balance of loan players alongside new recruits Chris Weale, Robbie Neilson and Dany N'Guessan to build a team which he says can "make the difference" in getting City out of the Championship.

Mandaric said: "If you take N'Guessan, he has all the qualities to play at a higher level than the Championship.

"Then there are others who are Championship players and could make the difference in taking us out of there."

Mandaric said this week that the primary transfer targets will be a midfielder and a striker, and City were yesterday linked with Wolves forward Andy Keogh.

Meanwhile, City's new policy of selling match tickets for all 23 home league matches starts tomorrow.

The club's JOMA home kit also goes on general sale in the rebranded megastore at the Walkers Stadium.

Mandaric said: "There is genuine excitement both inside and outside the Walkers Stadium about the coming season."

The club are also launching membership schemes which will enable fans to receive discounts on match tickets.

"It is a really positive step for the club that we can release all home match tickets, and the move to offer a £2 discount on match tickets to those who choose to join as members is sure to be popular," added Mandaric.

Right on cue! Last year I told anyone who would listen that the long term plan to get to the prem would be to get in young players, particularly loan players to help get us out of div 1 - keep those ( sign them on ) who were good enough - then do it again with potentially better quality to get us into the Prem. Meanwhile year on year those young players will be improving and developing into players hopefully good enough to hold their own when we do get into the prem. Always remembering that all these young players are effectively being assessed all the time and being sorted - wheat from the chaff - Hayes, Sappleton, Psssh on their way out with DJ Campbell. Some young players given 6 month or 12 month contracts to prove themselves.

In addition to the younger players we only seem to be bringing in players we have assessed very closely over long periods before we make offers. Players to fit into specific roles, as well as those who are adaptable. We could see 2 or three new purchases and maybe 2 or 3 loan players in the next week or two. We are talking a serious attempt at promotion this season. Believe it! Last thought for this post, we may use/develop N'Guessan into a striker - 6'1", fast and powerful!

MM - false hope!

Does anyone remember at the end of last season, the euphoria of being promoted as champions, which got even better when MM said we're pretty much going to go for it this season for a consecutive promotion to the premier league!? Wow, i thought - when actually, most City fans would have been delighted with a mid table finish to consolidate and look at developing the squad over a couple of years like most teams who end up going up to the Prem.

Now it seems, the man who raised our expectations (MM) is bringing them right down again; not going to pay £2m for a class act striker and linked to average championship players like darren carter, andy keogh and now relying on loan players. It's like he was drunk on the euphoria when he announced we were going up again and now he's sobering up and it's very disappointing - where's the big names - the players on the fringe of premiership first teams with experience and class for the championship, it's going to be a tough division to get out of and i don't think the way to do it is sign average championship players. I do trust and fully support 'the Nige' but feel MM has instilled false hope.

I'm always dubious about lots of loan players, do they try as hard as someone who has a contract, has loyalty to the club - not sure. Although loan players worked for us last season i think this is because league one was so poor, maybe it'll work again? i hope so.

rant over.

No, he's just shrewd... get as many mugs as possible to buy into the dream and fork out their cash nice and early.

Pearson seems to have the respect of the top managers who lend him players so hopefully some more will be on the way.

Hes still got the chance to buy some new players, and really Keogh and Carter are good players I can't see the problem with them, and drunk on Euphoria? It was a weekend in Southend can you really blame him? lol

What Gilbert and Martin who along with Hobbs yes 3 loan players who were central to the club breaking a recored of unbeaten games with a number of clean sheets, and a season where we broke the club record for away wins

how can you say the didn't work is just plain crazy they were bought in to a job at the level we were at and guess what they did what they had to do and got us to the top of the league what more do you really want?

i'd take them back if we can't find anyone else because 1 senior RB and 1 senior GK is not enough for 46 league games and 2 cups.

They did a job last season against MK Dons, Huddersfield and Stockport etc. this year they will struggle big time against your Ipswich, Sheff Utd, and Newcastle kind of opposition. I wan't us comfortably getting mid-table and not making mistakes at the back like we did quite often last season, not very often but it still happened.

David Martin & Kerrea Gilbert wouldn't be bad back-ups but Weale and Neilson have already been bought so they are looking quite slim already.
