Samilktray Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 I love R&B myself, brilliant for just kicking back and chilling out too, I'm no music analyst so most of the time I dont sit there picking fault and trying to judge lyrics to every song I listen to, to be fair with certain artists I will because some of the lyrics in my music collection are fantastic. If people dont like R&B then fair enough, but I know theres more than a few on here who share my love for it.
Koke Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 If folks don't like RnB, or even if they hate it, then that's fair enough. I've got no problems with that. But I just don't understand the need for slagging it off, like that no-mark Jackson girl or whatever she's called is doing. I don't like Cricket, cos I find it boring and extremely dull and the rules are really complicated, but there are obviously a lot of people who love the game. Just be and let be. I agree with Bellend Sebastian - RnB is drawing the critics because it's quite popular these days.
Bryn Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 I agree most of it is drivel, nothing wrong with listening to it though but I want more out of the music I listen to than what most R & B supplies, all the songs and even the videos merge into one there is little experimentation and lyrically its inane. I also dont like the fact the they use R & B it has little blues at all. I think it does hold weight just because you like R & B you cant escape the fact most of the stuff in the charts is terrible. That said I like some pop music and most of them have terrible lyrics and is pretty throwaway but I would never try and justify it as being important music...it isn't. Thats the difference I could defend Bob Dylan I could Defend Billy Bragg I could Defend Woody Guthrie but I also like some Saurdays songs but I wouldnt suggest they were important or relevant in anyway. You're able to reel off those kinds of artist with ease because Rock isn't particularly chartable anymore. If an RnB fan weighed in with artists of a similar calibre, with powerful lyrics, soulful voices and smooth beats, your argument gets pretty thin. I liken chart RnB to chart "rock" - you should be comparing Soulja Boy to someone really shite like one of the many samey indie bands out there for a fairer comparison. Going back to the original point, La Roux is hardly shattering and shaping world culture is she, what a crock of shit. Her music's got about as much meaning as her other chart peers.
Guest Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 *adopts screechy and whiney voice* I'm going in for the kill....... *realises she sounds a tit, and skulks off before someone notices*
purpleronnie Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 a similar calibre, with powerful lyrics, soulful voices and smooth beats I'm always open to new music if you could suggest some chart R & B with those things I'll check them out.

You've missed my point, you brought a legend like Bob Dylan into this debate and I'm making the point that I can see your Bob Dylan and raise you a Michael Jackson or a Whitney Houston. Comparing Bob Dylan to most of the stuff in the charts is like trying to correlate between McDonalds and a Michelin Star restaurant. I like you tend to deviate towards a more "rock" (to be very general) style but I think you're a being a bit narrow minded, and I think I've had a similar debate with you before.
purpleronnie Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 So you think the chart r & b is pushing boundaries? I agree most rock music sounds the same too, and wouldnt disagree if she had stated that but you cant disagree that most r & b does sound the same. As I stated before I'm sure there's underground stuff or songs that dont make the charts that is soulful great music (btw I love soul music) but she isnt talking about that. p.s. Whitney houston v Bob Dylan, c'mon now.
Samilktray Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 You go on about Bob Dylan way too much, and Ive just been listening to some of his stuff and its highly boring. Fair enough he may have influenced music in whatever way he has done, and I wont disrespect that, but my god I found him a drab listen.

He isnt my fave artist of all time or anything but lyrically he is incredible, thats why he's influenced generations of singer/songwriters. I'm sure there are current r & b artists who will do the same.

BoneDog Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 Can't disagree with this comment. A lot of R&B does have the most inane, nonsensical lyrics of any genre. It's dumbed down, commercial shit and she's bang on the money with her comments about the videos and lyrics. Yes. It's the same with majority of hip-hop too nowadays. It's all talkin about what size rims you got on ya motor, shakin ass or diamonds. Or fake gun talk (not all gun talk is fake obviously but 90% is). It used to be lyrical and thought provoking. But as a few have said there is still some proper R&B and Hip-Hop out there. And it aint half good Most of the stuff in the charts from any genre is awful, so thats a pretty pointless comment.R&B isnt all the same subject matter, I understand if its not you cup of tea, but looking past the more mainstream artists will show this. Truth D&B > R&B Yes man. (if > means better than! I not sure)
BoneDog Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 Would D'Angelo be considered R&B do you reckon? If so then not all R&B is shit. It's the same with all genres. Sift through the crap and you find the good stuff. Just coming out with a catch all comment such as R&B is all shit just makes people sound naive. Yes, he would defo be in R&B charts, but his music is also funk and a bit of jazz probably D'Angelo been bangin out good tunes for long time, 'Brown Sugar Baby' obviously which will never fade, 'Shit, Damn, M*tha ****a' two that I love
BoneDog Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 Who the fuck is she btw? My thoughts. Never heard of her
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 LaRoux When she has eyebrows I will listen.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 I've realised who she is. That single is ok (it's sold bucketloads, apparently) but it's not really my cup of tea. I wasn't really into electro-pop the first time round
purpleronnie Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 Not really a fan either but I loved the remix of her first hit, whatever it was called.
