Tevez Posted 30 July 2009 Posted 30 July 2009 I'm liking Rafa and his ideas for Liverpool next season. Cattermole (who I've changed my mind of) would be a decent signing and for 30 million I'd be there with Wenger and Mourinho laughing in the faces of Man City, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Don't get me wrong Alonso is a cracking player, but Benitez has got many options I wouldn't be that bothered if he wanted to swan off to Madrid.
martyn Posted 30 July 2009 Posted 30 July 2009 Alonso was key for Liverpool last season...Cattermole is not good enough to replace him. Indeed, they already have a midfield workhorse in Mascherano (should he stay), they don't need a similar yet inferior player. If they could get the £30m and perhaps sign Steven Defour and David Silva then I might reposition my stance.
Hitesh Posted 30 July 2009 Posted 30 July 2009 However good Alonso is, he is replaceable. I know the guy can pinpoint a pass and holds the midfield but its no point having a player that doesnt want to be there and then to sell him at a lower fee next year. If I was Rafa, I'd cash in a buy a few midfielder who bring something different and would want to play for the team. Although its probably easier me saying that than actually doing as I'm not the manager!
lcfc_jme Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 If I was Rafa, I'd ship Alonso out for £30m, buy Silva for £20m and spend the extra £10m+ on another winger. It's top business sense.
lildave3 Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Lee Cattermole is amazing. He's up there as one of my favourite Premier League players.
Jon the Hat Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Alonso is keen to go so might as well cash in. Would want to have Silva signed up first though.
Joe. Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 QUite possibly Benitez's fault in the first place by trying to offload him last summer. Plus the fact he pursued Barry for so long. Obviously he tried to talk him out of going after the season he's just had, but let's face it, once Madrid came calling the outcome was sealed. Cattermole is not a patch on Alonso though, they need somebody far more creative for me. Big loss.
Samilktray Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Big loss. Best central midfielder in the Premiership for me alongside Essien.
Joe. Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Big loss.Best central midfielder in the Premiership for me alongside Essien. Gerrard surely? Lampard?
Samilktray Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Gerrard surely? Lampard? Gerrard plays off Torres for Liverpool. And I prefer Alonso and Essien to Lampard.
Darkzzz_ Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Gerrard plays off Torres for Liverpool. And I prefer Alonso and Essien to Lampard. I have to totally agree with you here.
Fox92 Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 I was hoping he wasn't to leave Liverpool this summer with all the speculation as I want them to win the league and have lost a big player in Alonso but have gained around 30million and surley could find a replacement for that. I also like Lee Cattermole but I don't think he is a Liverpool player, if I was Rafa I think I'd go for Michael Johnson at Manchester City or Mark Noble of West Ham

Big Ol' Bob Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Johnson has lost the plot. And I wouldn't say Cattermole is better than Mark Noble personally, not a lot between them though, Noble is a bit more classy rather than all out kickin shit out of each other style Cattermole goes with.
Joe. Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Liverpool have already got Mascherano, so they don't really need Cattermole unless they're struggling for backup. Lucas is nowhere near good enough to replace Alonso, so they'll need to spend to get an adequate replacement for him.
StanSP Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Any chance that Liverpool could go for Stephen Ireland? He had a quality season last year.
Hitesh Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Any chance that Liverpool could go for Stephen Ireland? He had a quality season last year. Can't see him being allowed to leave and not sure he would actually want to!
Uncle Albert Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Any chance that Liverpool could go for Stephen Ireland? He had a quality season last year. No. Think Liverpool will sell him for about £32 million and bring in David Silva and maybe a new striker. Rafa likes Lucas and if push comes to shove he can play Gerrard back in midfield and move Kuyt into the Gerrard position.
Poakey Posted 31 July 2009 Posted 31 July 2009 Gerrard plays off Torres for Liverpool. And I prefer Alonso and Essien to Lampard. Who did he "play off" before Torres arrived then?
Uncle Albert Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 Who did he "play off" before Torres arrived then? Nobody as he was an out n out central midfielder until Torres arrived before that they had Garcia playing off either Baros or Cisse.

I hope so, it would be nice to see Silva in the Premierleague, providing he plays for Liverpool. It says in the Sun that they are after David Villa, but I couldn't see him going for less than 40million sureley.
StanSP Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 Liverpool are pllanning to use the money from Alonso sale to buy Aquilani. Surely if they buy him (reportedly for £15m) then they won't have enough money to get Silva or Villa?
Uncle Albert Posted 1 August 2009 Posted 1 August 2009 They will have more money now because of the owners sorting out a new deal with the banks to pay their debt off so that means they are able to give Rafa abit more money to sign for players, they had no money at the start of the window but they were still able to sign Glen Johnson. The departures of Arbeloa, Leto and possibly Dossena will help with the Aquilani deal. I think David Villa will sign for Liverpool now Real arent interested in him anymore, so hopefully he can sign and tear it up in the Premier League.
