davieG Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 From the Merc Steve Howard is winning his race to be fit for Monday night's clash with his hometown club Newcastle United. It was feared the Leicester City striker would be out for several weeks after he limped off with a hamstring injury at Sheffield United last week. However, Howard has returned to training and is hopeful of lining up against the club he supported as a boy. Durham-born Howard was a season-ticket holder at Newcastle until his football career took off at Tow Law Town and then Hartlepool United, and the former roofer is looking forward to making only his second appearance at St James' Park. "I am hoping I will be back and involved in some way on Monday," he said. "I tweaked my hamstring at Sheffield United but the physio team have worked incredibly hard on it, and it is coming on really well. "I am back training and I had a really tough session yesterday morning. I was running at full pelt. I was shattered afterwards. "I am happy with how my recovery is going and I am hoping I will be involved." Howard will face more competition for a starting place after the arrivals of Paul Gallagher and Yann Kermorgant during his absence. Gallagher signed last week for an undisclosed fee from Blackburn Rovers, while boss Nigel Pearson further bolstered his forward line by snapping up free agent Kermorgant on Monday. Howard has welcomed the competition and has vowed to work hard to regain his place in the starting line-up. "The manager has brought in a couple of new strikers and they are good additions," he said. "It is good to have competition to keep everyone on their toes and I have faced this challenge so many times in my career. "It gives you a big incentive to keep pushing on and working hard, and I will not shy away from the challenge. "I just concentrate on getting my head down and working as hard as I possibly can." It is still not known how long teenage striker Martyn Waghorn will be out of action after he also limped out of last week's 1-1 draw at Brammall Lane. The 19-year-old is loan from Sunderland until January 11.
Guest Bilo Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 Good news! With Gutierrez apparently out, Ameobi looking doubtful and now this our chances of getting a result up there appear to be improving. Could we inflict Newcastle's first defeat of the season and have the press creaming their kecks? It looks more likely now.
dogadug Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 Gutierrez is definitely out, with a torn hamstring, mark by word and it is also 'very likely' say the newcastle medical team that ameobi is out as well
Father Ted Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 We're in with a chance here!!! SOOPER SOOPER STEVE!!!
suffolk fox Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 Newcastle will have Barton the thug back, Nicky Butt and they are very very hopeful of Amoebi being fit for Monday. Ain't gonna be easy, but I beleive we can go there and get a result. It's gonna be very close 1-0 us.
Legend_in_blue Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 It'll be a 2-2 draw. We'll throw away the win in the final few minutes.
suffolk fox Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 4-3 them we will take a 3-1 lead and Shearer will come on for them and score a last minute in injury time winner!!! To get his hattrick!!?? Ooops sorry senile dementia!!
Lillehamring Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 personally, i hope he doesn't play, he clearly won't be match fit, and we have plenty of striking options... but then i don't subscribe to the 'we are shit without howard' school of thought...
Bert Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 SSN are reporting Ameobi has a stress fracture to his foot....
FilboFox Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 As happy as I am at this news, I just don't want him rushing back into this game cause it's his home club without being fully fit again... If he is though, excellent!
Father Ted Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 SSN are reporting Ameobi has a stress fracture to his foot.... Well, if that's the case he'll be out for at least a month... Is Andy Carroll not out aswell? This could be interesting Can't wait to see Browny snap both of Barton's legs.
Jiggers the Fox Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 Well, if that's the case he'll be out for at least a month...Is Andy Carroll not out aswell? This could be interesting Can't wait to see Browny snap both of Barton's legs. I'd take this over 3 points anyday!
dogadug Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 All 3 of their strikers are out injured - Ameobi with a foot problem, and Carroll and Xisco with groin problems So the only strikers they have available are youth team players!!!!
Ozwin Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 I actually said this the other day. I said hopefully Howard will return from injury early giving us more of a chance. I'm thrilled by this news.
Uncle Albert Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 I'd take this over 3 points anyday! Yeah course you would you idiot, so we lose a match and lose Wayne Brown for over 3 games you clown. Anyway great news with Big Steve, Colocini will not like playing against a player like Howard, Colocini couldn't even handle Luke Moore when it came to strength and a battle in the air. Will be a good battle in the centre of the park, Oakley and Wellens v Barton and Smith with possibly Nolan in there aswell if they are struggling for forwards.
dogadug Posted 28 August 2009 Posted 28 August 2009 waghorn and howard could be fit for mondayIt now says on the OS that Waghorn as well as Howard could both be available for Monday
Nath Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 What are the odds that we inflict the only home lose in the league for the geordies?
topharry123 Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 So, the weekend results couldn't have been any better for us if you ask me! Who would of thought that noone above us would win this weekend! Sets Monday's game up perfectly. A win by 2 goals will see us joint top! So is it fate that we will be top on Monday evening? What does everyone think? The championship looks so open this season already!

The championship looks so open this season already! Lets not get carried away yet. It would be nice to be top but is so early in the season and we have got a lot of games to get through. Im just happy at the brilliant start we have had to the season and quietly hoping we can carry it on throughout the season which will put us in good stead for the play offs and above.
topharry123 Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 Can we fast forward to May please? i know there's an awful long way to go, but it would be such a huge boost to the confidence of the players to be sat on top of the table after 5 games!
scinnell Posted 29 August 2009 Posted 29 August 2009 All 3 of their strikers are out injured - Ameobi with a foot problem, and Carroll and Xisco with groin problemsSo the only strikers they have available are youth team players!!!! no Alan Smith
