Katy Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 Loved it when Katy text to say DJ was on the bench, really glad to see him back. You just love me texting you. I've seen us play worse and Gallagher needs to recover quickly from the massive 'mare he had yesterday, I think he made us look worse than we were. Loving this fighting back element that Nige has introduced into our game, obviously I would like us not to go a goal down before we start to play but when we do it's good that don't roll over and die. Genius triple substitution with half an hour left, totally changed the game and a very brave move I thought but we were going nowhere as we were. Funny to see DJ bottle it in front of goal when it was easier to score but it was hardly surprising really was it. Waggy's goal looked even better on the telly than watching it live, we heard a Cov fan outside the ground say it was a flukey goal haha, ok love!
Salieri Posted 4 October 2009 Author Posted 4 October 2009 We are going to be short of goals come the end of the season, as our entire so called strike force is virtually non existant, thanks to NPS's poor buys. Fryatt, Howard, Waghorn, Kermorgant, Gallagher and DJ Campbell. Not exactly short on options are we? It's about finding the right combinations, i'm sure they will all play their part and contribute as the season progresses. I agree we've struggled for goals so far this season, but i think we've got enough to work with there to put that right.

marbelladave Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 Nice of Coventry to arrange an early start, meant I was able to see the game and fulfill my familial duties as well, only just got in, bit knackered but here are a few thoughts on the game. Firstly it is remarkable how similar this was too the Boro game, the only real difference being that Coventry had a player who could strike a freekick from 20 yards and Boro didn't. Lots of effort And determination but little quality. We scored, like at Boro only because we were lucky. Goal kick, flick by Howard could have gone anywhere but fell in just about the only place that Waghorn could get to strike it, Lovely finish. Gallagher looked very decent when in the box supporting Fryatt, and less than useless in his right (defensive) midfield role. If he is going to play, for Christ's sake play him upfront! Yanni was wonderfully mobile (compared to Howard) and looked very good for the period in the middle of the first half when we were dominant in midfield, but as Coventry gained control and we resorted to hoofball he was less effective. Oakley and King were outnumbered as usual, and under pressure Oakley had one of his least effective games. Wellens, Brown and Hobbs still are not communicating, Hobbs looks jittery and unsure of himself, I think he really misses the calming influence of Tunchev! Brown's physicality when the ball was in the air was impressive, but with the ball on the floor he was as inept as usual. His distribution was, again as usual, completely woeful! The 3 substitutes barely changed anything, just supplied more energy for a while, the goal was almost pure luck, route 1 at it's most basic. BTW Pearson to DJ; Great news son, your getting on. DJ; Great. Pearson; Yep, you've got nearly 30 minute..............as right wingback. :frusty:

Corky Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 The 3 substitutes barely changed anything, just supplied more energy for a while, the goal was almost pure luck, route 1 at it's most basic. How can two substitutes combining to create a goal barely change things? And it was route 1 at it's most effective, with a well-directed long ball, good flick-on and great anticipation and finish.
Maybes Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 Oh dear the last time we played you there was 22k at the Walkers. You got 20,000 against Preston who were third and you were 7th , after a year unbeaten , that is appalling. Get you're figures right before you come preaching about attendances you disabled. 23,905 being the correct figure. Enjoy your 17,000 at the Ricoh next match and the 15,000 empty seats.
carterfox90 Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 on reflection i would say a point was a fair result on the balance of play their freekick was pretty unstopable & waggy took his goal like an old pro me & the lads thought NP had lost his marbles when he brought all 3 subs on in one go but it was a master stroke just glad we didnt lose as i know to many cov fans one point how embarrasing must it be to be a cov player & have to run out to tha pathetic song they play

marbelladave Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 You were doing alright till there.Wellens didn't even play. The subs changed everything, including the scoreline. and What? Ooops Typo, I was pretty tired, Weale of course. I was simply commenting about the unease of he, plus our center backs when the ball comes into our box. We do not seem organised and it ends up with Brown (usually) just hoofing the ball clear and giving it back to the opposition. The subs did change everything in that they scored the goal, cannot argue with that. What I was referring to was that they barely changed the way we were playing and goal apart created little. Howard's flick on found Waghorn who scored beautifully, but to suggest it was constructed in any way is wrong. Howard got his head to the ball and for the first time in ages it was directed to his strike partner, he needs to do that much more often for me.

marbelladave Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 Sorry guys, the DJ crack was probably unfair. I was somewhat overwhelmed by my confusion over NP's tactics in recent times. Picking attacking players to play in the wide positions is fine, but when they are required to do substantial defensive work as well I get annoyed. I am not talking about the routine tracking back that is required by all forwards these days, but the fact that we are almost always outnumbered in midfield, where we invariably play just 2 'proper' midfield player, so we need our wide men to take up the slack. Again this is fine if the wide players deployed are capable of a bit of sound defense and are comfortable on the ball in deep positions, but this is not the case. Put simply, neither Gallagher nor Dyer (and later DJ) are sound in midfield, they are quite clearly attacking players 'doing a job' and it is hopelessly ineffective. I sort of thought that Wellens was maybe not 100% fit because we desperately needed more from our midfield and he would have been the obvious choice, but NP went with 3 new strikers and got lucky.
marbelladave Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 So it was constructed? Not really. Howard gets his head to a lot of balls as a matter of course and naturally tries to direct them the towards his team mate. The fact that very few actually find his fellow striker in any kind of decent position suggests that when it does, as on saturday, a large element of luck is involved.

It would have been luck had it bounced of his arse with him knowing nothing about it... it's a move they try a lot, and one we have scored from quite a few times over the last two seasons. I wouldn't class it as luck, you could say Coventry were lucky as he probably misses 30 of those for every 1 he scores.

I thought we looked vulnerable before and after the substitutions, our defence seems to have lost some of it's confidence since the 3 goals against Watford, maybe the break will give them a chance to take stock and refuel their confidence.. What was noticeable to me was that Dyer moved into the left of a 3 man midfield and still managed to get in the box ahead of the 3 strikers.

Maybe I should employ you as translator..... After the hurly burly start of a typical derby game we settled first and owned the midfield for about 15-20 minutes in the middle of the first half. Yanni was making runs and offering himself and the ball was played mainly on the ground and for a while we looked pretty good and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions with Dyer shooting over and Gallagher hitting the bar. Then Coventry started to close us down, Oakley in particular wilted under the pressure and we were pushed deeper and deeper. Despite their best efforts neither Gallagher nor Dyer are good enough or strong enough to offer much assistance when the opposition has the ball and from this point onwards we were back to the long ball, mostly over the top for Fryatt who made little of such opportunities. Second half started as the first finished, with Coventry largely in control. The substitutes made no appreciable difference to our style of play but now there was a target for the long punts forward. Howard was first to the ball a dozen or so times but only once did he find his strike partner, to such tremendous effect. We played poorly, got over run in midfield and scored the equaliser by reverting to hoof ball.
Joe. Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 Hi. Cov fan here. I will be careful what I say as I can recall being invited to 'go on, give us some' when you guys got relegated to league one. I proceeded to 'have a laugh' and make jokes but was swiftly booted off. So I come on here today to see your opinions of the game and it is just one big slagging off fest. I am sure that if I offer a retort, I will once again be dumped.So......my opinion of the game was that both teams looked pretty poor. Our keeper only had one serious threat in the whole game and he let that one in. Not good enough in my opinion. Ok, there was the flukey cross in the 1st half that hit our bar. He was nowhere on that one too. To be honest, I left the ground feeling very disappointed that you had equalised. I can't believe we let a goal in when you had been so timid for most of the game. I admit that we never looked like adding to our tally too much in the second half, but your performance wasn't saying much either. I think the league is pretty poor and we should both settle comfortably around mid-table. I can't see either of us doing anymore than that. I'm not really interested in bitching about other things like most on here. Just wanted to discuss the game. I work in Leicester and had a bet with a work colleague. I had to bring a £10 Borders voucher in today as the away team has the draw when we bet. So I hope we draw at the Walkers later on this season or maybe......win. Stop crying.
