Summer Targets Thread, worth a dabble?

Latest from GTFox on FoxFanzine

The Press Association rumour this sunday is that a Connelly deal is definately done with Sunderland, for circa £1M and City will sign Riordan and also Nugent, if Preston can get McVeigh from Norwich. Rather complicated but CL will not agree to Connolly leaving (he wants to leave)unless he can get replacements in.

147279[/snapback]

£1M for Connolly is entirely reasonable. Sunderland were prepared to pay £500,000 last season for him when they were in the CCC. Now they're in the Prem, they can afford a bit more. A player is worth as much as a team is prepared to pay.

Riordan would cost 600-750K? Not implausible. Nugent would be random, however.

One out, two in would be a sound bit of business, if both were certs for the XI/bench every week.

Please note that GTFox has been spouting alot of 'press association' stuff all summer and one of it has come true.

I'd be mortified if Connolly leaves, but £1 million for a 28 year old in the current transfer market is pretty good but only if we get someone of Riordon's calibre and another striker.

Believe it when I see it.

McCarthy is looking.;)

McCarthy's new targets

Aug 1 2005

By Paul Gilder, The Journal

Mick McCarthy is preparing to go back to the drawing board in an attempt to strengthen his depleted squad as his two chief targets begin to slip from his grasp.

The Sunderland boss held fresh talks with Stoke at the weekend but, despite increasing his offer for Clive Clarke, it seems as though the in-demand defender is bound for West Ham.

Alan Pardew is confident of completing a deal for the 25-year-old this week and last night confirmed that Clarke is on the verge of pledging his future to the Upton Park club.

And having admitted that there is little more he can now do to persuade Derby to sanction the departure of Grzegorz Rasiak, McCarthy's summer recruitment programme is set to focus on fresh targets.

"We did make an approach for Rasiak but I have seen that (Derby manager) Phil Brown has been at pains to say that he is going to stay. So be it," said McCarthy, who having already offered £1m for a striker with no top-flight experience is not expected to meet the Rams' demand for the £2m they want for the Pole.

Rasiak scored in Derby's weekend win at Burton Albion and with the new Championship campaign now just five days away, Brown is determined to retain the striker's services. It is a familiar situation for McCarthy, who has already failed to land Kenny Miller, Heidar Helguson and Ricardo Fuller this summer.

"I am still looking and we're trying our best to get someone in," explained the Black Cats boss, who was linked with an interest in Walsall's England Under-19 international Matty Fryatt at the weekend. "People have been throwing names at me but I'm not going to confirm or deny any of them because I don't think that it is fair."

McCarthy and Pardew both held talks with John Rudge, Stoke's director of football, on Saturday morning. But with both having tabled bids of £300,000, it seems that the West Ham manager has clinched Clarke's signing having agreed to allow two of his fringe players to join the Potteries club on a season-long loan basis. The Black Cats boss is expected to use the 12 days leading up to the new season to cast his eye over several prospective signings on the Academy of Light training pitches.

High on his list of priorities will be adding defensive cover, with the Greek international Traianos Dellas understood to be among those to have come under consideration.

The 29-year-old has been linked with several English clubs this summer following the expiration of his contract at AS Roma and the Wearsiders are the latest side to be credited with an interest in the Euro 2004 winner. But his Italian agent Stefano Antonelli last night played down suggestions that Dellas is due in the North-East for a trial this week.

Another player to emerge as a potential recruit over the weekend is the former Newcastle full-back Olivier Bernard, who is a free agent having parted company with Southampton this summer.

The Frenchman has been training with Birmingham but although he had hoped to win a contract at St Andrew's, Bernard remains without a club with the new top-flight season less than two weeks away.

McCarthy has already confirmed that talks have been held with Bernard's representatives this summer. It seems that, following his failure to land Clarke, he may have decided to step up his initial interest in a player who would be an excellent addition to his squad.

I hope Connolly doesn't leave, but £1 million is great business. I don't think it's true however.

If it is true about McCarthy requiring Connollys' services then i'd snap his hand off for a million (although the mackems must have more money than sense imo) we can get better AND younger for that amount and less!

i think we should sell connoly. i dont rate him

Find me a striker who scored 7 goals in his last 11 games, would cost less than £500,000, is an international and i'll agree with you.

Now Le Tallec has joined Sunderland, the Connolly rumour may well have died. If it was a figment of GTFox's imagination, it was a very well thought out fake!

A loan may well be the only way as there no chance of getting Riordan, Boyd.A, or Nugent without significant readies. I've not idea how much Boyd.K would cost, but I'm guessing he's not cheap either.

Mellor or Chopra (if Newcastle make an unfeasible move for Owen)???

Failing that, Steve Claridge is looking for employment, I believe.

Well, a knackered one will set him back next to nothing! ;)

Finding a player like a fully fit-Ricardo Fuller (ie. sh1t-hot)? Yes please, but I'm not holding my breath!

Interesting. Are we to take that Levein may well have tried to sign Fuller before he joined Southampton? I had a feeling he would. There aren't many players like Fuller around though as in strong, pacey and good.

I'd look at that Quincy from Arsenal or Ryan Smith.

Latest Rumour from GTFox, not that he's been proved correct yet:

The latest is that we are trying to sign on loan: (to get options on the bench before Saturday I assume)

Andrew Barrowman, age 21 from Birmingham City.

A product of Rangers academy has represented Scotland at all youth levels. Spent some of last season on loan at Crewe.

Made premiership debut as sub against City in March 2004.

Sounds Like a lad with an attitude: Source

27 - Andrew Barrowman

Club: Birmingham

Shirt Number: 27

Position: Forward

Date of Birth: November 27, 1984

Birthplace: Wishaw

Height: 5' 11

Weight: 11.6

Profile

Barrowman is a Scottish youth international on the books of Birmingham City.

He earned his first taste of professional football in October 2003 when he was loaned to Crewe Alexandra for a month. His debut came in a 2-2 draw at home to Bradford City, and he scored in his next match - a 3-0 home win over Derby County.

Barrowman played a total of four game for the Alex.

Gillingham did show an interest in the player before he was handed a squad number by Birmingham in January 2004.

He was handed his Premiership debut in March 2004, replacing Kenny Cunningham for the final three minutes of the 1-0 home defeat by Leicester City.

He was awarded a new two-year contract in the summer of 2004, and was loaned out to Blackpool for the opening three months of the 2004/05 campaign.

But Barrowman stunned Blackpool boss Colin Hendry by walking out of his three-month loan after just two weeks.

'Andrew came to see me and said he didn't want to be here anymore and wanted to go back to Birmingham,' said Hendry. 'There was no point in keeping a player here who wasn't happy.

'More importantly he didn't have the fight, like the rest of the lads here at the minute, and he didn't show the right attitude - it's disappointing and it shocked me, but that's football for you,' Hendry told the club's official website.

Barrowman made his Blackpool debut as a substitute against Sheffield Wednesday and came off the bench again in the home defeat to Stockport County.

He was again out on loan at the start of March in 2005, joining Mansfield Town where he made his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Shrewsbury Town.

Well they are only rumours swirling around the press association so there's no reason why they should be any more factual than all the other dross printed in the daily rags. I just post them as they are part of the fun that is pre-season. :)
