Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson has organised a fund-raising bike ride for Loros after seeing at first-hand the "exceptional" work done by staff at the hospice.

Along with City legend and Loros patron Alan Birchenall, and members of his backroom staff, Pearson will complete a coast-to-coast bike ride from Newcastle to Carlisle next month.

Earlier this year, the club chose the Groby Road charity to be its supported charity and the Loros logo is now emblazoned on the team's away kit.

Pearson, the Birch and chairman Milan Mandaric visited the hospice in September, and said they were all inspired by the patients and staff.

Speaking at the bike ride launch yesterday, Pearson said he wanted to do more for the charity than simply having the club affiliation.

He said: "When we visited, it was easy to see what a fantastic organisation it is and the exceptional work that staff do.

"It will be nice to raise money but, more importantly, to raise awareness as well.

"We've got their name on our away shirt but this is a great chance for us to do something concrete, where people can see there's a bit more to it."

The bike ride starts on Monday, November 9, but Pearson says he has not started his training yet. "I think that'll make it even more fun," he said. "There's a lot of us going so I'm sure there'll be lots of laughs.

"A lot of people raise money for Loros and if we can help nudge things in the right direction I think that's very important."

Cycle specialist Graham Goode Motors is lending 19 bikes to the team.

The Birch, who is no stranger to fund-raising, having collected about £600,000 for various charities with his annual pitch run, says he is up for the challenge.

He said: "We're all really looking forward to it and, as I'm a patron of Loros, it's great to be able to do something like this. It was Nigel's idea and it's fantastic. Even if we only raise £1, it's still £1 more.

"But hopefully we'll really raise the profile of Loros.

"It's a great place and I'm honoured to be involved."

Loros staff said they were "amazed" when they heard Nigel and his team were getting involved with fund-raising.

Fund-raising manager Diane Morris said: "When they visited they all said they would try to do whatever they could to help, but I didn't expect it to be something this big with them getting so involved, especially Nigel Pearson. We're absolutely thrilled."

Nigel, not only are you a brilliant manager but you're obviously a brilliant bloke as well. If I had a hat, I'd take it off to you. A worthy cause and a great way of raising publicity for it.

great to see them doing something like this although it would have helped even more if they had say given a pound from every away shirt the club sold instead of only giving them money on shirts sold through Loros shops
