Think the Christian Right would actually prefer Jesus to have been gay than to have been slinging one up Mary Magdalene after the way they reacted to the Da Vinci Code. He'll be fine. Maybe. He has every right to say this but why is beyond me, even if he was being ironic. He must know exactly how America will react to his words and how provocative his statement will be. FOX News will have a field day with this and it could well blow up, even if his tongue was firmly in cheek.

Depending on the denomination, homosexuality can be either completely frowned upon or virtually accepted. Personally, I have nothing against homosexuals, but I've always believed that partaking in homosexuality would be a sin against the religion. When it comes to evidence from the bible to suggest this, a telling extract is from Romans in the New Testament. "Because people did those things, God left them and let them do the shameful things they wanted to do. Women stopped having natural sex and started having sex with other women. In the same way, men stopped having natural sex and began wanting each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and in their bodies they received punishment for those wrongs." Read into that what you will.

Joking aside, to a reasonable human being homosexuality is clearly not a problem and certainly not detrimental to their character. But we're talking about the American Bible Belt, the Christian Right. The kind of people convinced that all A-Rabs are terrorists and voted Bush in twice, considering anyone who voted against him to be a terrorist sympathiser or communist. We aren't talking reasonable people, we're talking rednecks and unfortunately they have a big voice in the American public and media. Having said that, I somehow doubt Elton was the most popular among the rednecks for this very reason. Let's hope the more sensible Christians in America aren't swayed by the inevitable vilification that will be coming from Fox.
